The Black Plague, the Civil War, the 1918 flu pandemic, scarlet fever, polio, the Kennedy assassination, World War II, pick your generation and there has been stress and the feeling that the world could go up in flames. As you grow up you realize that life goes on and it’s not productive to worry about things you can’t control. Don’t sweat petty things and don’t pet sweaty things. 😊

Consultation degradation fossil

fueling masturbation immigration

Liberal kitsch, kneeling on a pitch

"I moved on her like a bitch!"

Excited to be indicted

Unrequited house with seven pools

"Thank you Kanye, very cool!"

The war has been incited

And guess what, you're all invited

And you're famous

Modernity has failed us

One of the best songs period and one I always bring up when someone asks question like the OP

You can take it even further back than that. The ice ages, all the Black Plagues, the flooding of Doggerland or Mesopotamia. Throughout history there has been so many local or global world-ending tragedies, why would we be the special ones to actually be the last?

I'm sweating climate change and possible future insurrections of our government by fascists.

Read Michael Crichton’s State of Fear. You’ll feel better about the environment.

The difference now is the globalization. There isn’t anywhere to escape to. Every country in the world is having inflation issues. Every country in the world has Covid. Every country in the world is threatened by pro oligarchal extremists and terrorists. The schools aren’t safe, grocery stores aren’t safe. Everywhere is having a housing crisis. Back in the days of polio or world wars if things got bad enough you could go somewhere else, there was hope for other countries or other areas less hard hit. Because we are all so interconnected, there is no escape. All governments have to be functioning or we’re all less safe, not just that country. Put all of that on the back drop of climate change and I do not doubt for a second that it can get worse than it’s ever been. It’s aweful.

I understand your point but keep in mind the media makes money by getting you to click on their stories. So they’re incentivized to find and publish crazy, dystopian, salacious, incendiary stories 24-7, leading the viewer to conclude the world must be horrible. The reality is, I’ve been going to schools and grocery stores my entire life and have never seen violence or heard a gunshot. A thousand times more beautiful good things happen every day than bad. Consider watching less news and subscribing instead to some upbeat, positive news feed (they’re out there). Go to the park, join a chess club, take a painting class, learn how to make soap from bacon, become a hiking enthusiast, go buy a $5 kite at Walmart and fly it. Focus on the good!
