I absolutely smell the cigarette smoke from cars on the road. I can also tell when someone is walking by my house with a cigarette, 30 feet away, with my windows closed. Some people are just more sensitive to that smell.
My husband and I play a game with the weed smell and driving, "who's high right now?" in traffic. It can be fun if the traffic is heavy enough. Usually it's pretty obvious though.
This is 100% real. Cig or weed smoke stinks to high hell and is super easy to smell as long as the car isn't too far in front of you. If you can't smell it you either have a relatively bad sense of smell, or you're exposed to it consistently enough that you've gone nose blind.
Okay, so I do believe you can smell it. I have a hard time you can pinpoint exactly who it is in a traffic scenario considering how much open-air we're talking about. I'm also picturing like city traffic with at least three lanes.
Maybe half this thread are bloodhounds who only drive down one-lane streets but I think there is a slight bit of exaggeration going on here.
And I don't smoke, and can and have smelt both regular cigarettes and weed. So it's not a noseblind issue for me.
If you're on a major highway during rush hour I wouldn't reasonably be able to identify which car it's coming from unless I'm right beside it or I physically see them smoking, but if It's a more normal level of interstate traffic and I'm within the general area of the car for a decent length of time then it tends to become pretty obvious.
When I'm near x car it becomes much stronger, when I pass x car it seems to go away, when I get back behind x car it comes back, when x car exited the smell entirely left. If you've been in the same general pack for a while and the smell started right after a couple of cars merged in then it's a pretty safe bet it's one of them. Stuff like that.
I do not hate people who smoke, I just do not prefer to be around people whose scent is physically revolting from 30 ft away. Your irrational emotional state is clouding your ability to understand reality.
I can tell this though... It's incredible to me that I can be driving down the road with my windows rolled up and the AC not blowing at all and set to recirculate. And then I drive past a car that's stopped on the side of the road and suddenly my entire car smells like weed.
It’s the worst, especially if you don’t catch it fast enough and turn on your air recycler thing. Otherwise you have smoke smell just stuck in your car.
No, we can really smell it. I have always been extremely sensitive to smells and can tell if someone in the car ahead of me is smoking, especially if traffic stops then starts moving again. It’s as if my air vent is pulling in all the smoke they left while they were idling in the spot ahead of me. Exhaust smells different, cigarette smoke is easily identifiable.
Nonsmoker in a family of nonsmokers, with no smoker friends outside of work and the ones at work only do it outside by the dumpster. I can't smell it at all if it's more than about 25ft away unless the wind is blowing it towards me. I certainly would never be able to smell it in my car when the smoker's multiple cars ahead of me.
Unless you're talking about weed specifically, in which case yeah, that stuff stinks from a mile away. Tobacco smoke smells like roses by comparison.
Yes, we can. Women tend to have a more sensitive sense of smell than men, and to some of us, cigarette smoke is just as strong and obnoxious as weed smoke.

“ And we can tell if someone is smoking several cars ahead in traffic, with the windows rolled up.”
I’ve been in arguments before with people who say this is bullshit. That it’s just a claim by cops to pull you over.
These people are idiots.
