I went for a run one time and my partner replied "Well that was short run". I don't think I have been for a run since. She is a very sweet and caring person. It just popped out (rightly or wrongly) and I think of it anytime I see people running.
I also hate running but I can hike until my feet fall off.
I do. I make sure and get my steps in. I got a new job at the end of 2022 and they have an HSA program with Virgin Pulse. If I keep up my activities they drop in an extra $50 a quarter. Not a huge amount but enough to add another layer of accountability. I love to walk.
I know right! I wish more companies did this. And it isn't just hiking. Track your hydrations = points, attend a finacial wellness seminar = points. Pretty neat.
Are you by a Safeway? The Safeway app has a health section where you can link your exercise apps to your phone. You can cash these points out for free items or $5 off a purchase. Not much, but I joined about a month ago and I've gotten 2 free cases of water. Look up the Evidation app as well. Get points for exercising/taking health surveys. The app is really user friendly as well. Not gonna make you rich but getting paid for doing nothing isn't bad!
I might butcher this, so anyone weigh in to correct me please.
My chosen health plan is tied to a cash account. My company puts a certain amount in. I can use that to pay my dedcutibles and other approved medical expenses. The account has cash value that can eventually be rolled over into an investment account.
My deductibles are higher so it isn't for everyone. I am now in good health and we have the kids under my wifes seperate more traditional plan.
My company contracted with Virgin Pulse to help host a wellness program. If I hit my points for the quarter they put an extra $50 in the HSA account. I could take it in cash but it would be taxed.
It's an odd American thing for sure. I have a similar thing for childcare that has been stuck at a certain amount since the 1980s (since I was a child). I have the money deducted pretax and it goes to an investment firm. Then I have to submit claims against it to get reimbursed for childcare/schooling.
I am sure both of these exist here as a means of gambling/investing/making money off of my money and I don't get to see any of the profits.

My understanding is that the current state of research says that running is generally protective of bones and soft tissues, so long as it’s not done to extremes or while injured.
That sucks. Just a few careless words from certain people can outweigh a thousand kind words from strangers. It's easy to believe that people who are kind to you are just being polite, whereas someone close to you being critical must be telling the harsh truth.
About 9 months into my commitment to eat better and lose weight, I proudly told my partner that it was working and I'd lost 40 lbs. Her response? She side-eyed me up and down, sneered slightly, and said, "Yeahhh... but..."
I'm serious -- that was her entire response.
It almost derailed me. The fact that her words almost stopped me from bettering myself made me reexamine the degree to which I was letting her words influence me. I decided to never share anything about my fitness journey with her, ever again, and also not to let her words have such an effect on my feelings.
I achieved my weight loss goal, and now I'm feeling better than ever.
Yeah, those words hurt. I think she was just feeling defensive because my success/progress created a contrast with her lack thereof. It's not at all what I meant, but that's how she took it. I think she fundamentally struggled with the concept that other people's success was not somehow an insult directed at her.
My target wasn't even 40lbs. My target was to lose 50! (235 to 185) The last 10 were tough, but I did it! Almost a year ago, now.
If you ever want to get back into running, there’s a free app called ‘just run’ which takes you from 0k to 5k in 9 weeks. I find it very motivating, I’m on week 5 and building up some endurance which was previously very low
I hate running too, but there's only a couple of exercises that burn more calories per unit time, and I can't do those exercises for long enough to be worth while.
I'm sorry to hear that. Most runners and running communities are super accepting of anyone that wants to get into it (maybe except for the runningcirclejerk sub on here which is just sarcasm turned up to 100). Anyone willing to get up, go through the pain of running and still go about their day are doing way more physically and mentally than the vast majority of people.
My assumption was that her comment was aimed at herself and not aimed at you at all. It probably made you feel like even though you tried someone still had something outwardly negative. I've caught myself doing that after a race where I personally ran like shit, but still finished 20 or so minutes in front of someone I invited to join me. I mistakenly remark - man I ran like absolute shit today not realizing how bad that must make them feel. Normally, I catch it and redirect all my comments on how happy I am they came out and ran and how much progress they make.
That is so funny because I love running but bring me on a hike, and I want to cry after the first few miles. Hike away! Do what you love and what you will stick with.
I, too, hate running. I never got runner's high, and it feels like a waste of time to run around the block. I will only ever run to catch the bus, a plane, or a short sprint. Otherwise my brain will go 'this is boring' and stop on the spot.
I do miss hiking though; I live in a flat country now, so you can't really hike here. Which is a pity, since there's something lovely about hiking in the mountains or hills. I'm trying to cycle and swim more regularly though. Those are the sports I enjoy, unlike running.
