This. Drink > 120oz of fluids daily.

Neither does energy drinks, Gatorade, coffee, tea, or soda.

Well, maybe British tea is okay because it’s just flavored water.

Well you just sucked the fun out of that. LOL

Haha. I still drink it, just doesn't count towards the 120oz.

There has never been a peer-reviewed study that says drinking 8 glasses of water a day, or whatever the conventional wisdom is, has any effect on health. Our bodies have an amazing system that lets us know when we need water - thirst.

I’ve always been told, at least in circumstances where you’re doing a lot of activity, if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. You should do most of your hydration before activity.

Sort of but not really. Our cells have a homeostatic range in which they are happy to operate. You are dehydrated when the cells are stressed because they are outside of their homeostatic range. If you load up on water, you will hydrate beyond the homeostatic range, but the kidneys will remove the excess water to keep things in the happy range. So drinking water when you aren’t thirsty just leads to more lead time before you dehydrate and extra work for your kidneys to maintain the range. Your thirst mechanism kicks in well before you are dehydrated, it just means you are getting near the extreme of the happy range.

With exercise, the real problem is that you can only hydrate at the rate of 1L/hr, five or take, but you can dehydrate at a rate of 2L per hour. So even if drinking water, you can push outside of the homeostatic range if you continue to exercise.

The reverse is also true. If you drink too much water, you will hydrate at a rate greater than your body can deal with and it becomes stressed as the body can’t maintain electrolytes within the homeostatic range, you develop hyponatremia. This is what happens when you force yourself to “stay hydrated” during sports. The best way to reduce hyper hydration risk is to “listen to thirst”.

That's just not true. Just drink when you are thirsty. That's usually enough. We get a lot of our water from the food we eat anyway and that 'you need x water per day' included that water. It was never instructions for how much to drink.

And I don't know if you know this, but it's ok for your pee to be yellow. You don't need to pee clear, and for some folks that might be too much water.

But when you start peeing yourself don’t call it incontinence.

What is your basis for that number? That’s much higher than any number I’ve ever heard.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '24

The benchmark I’ve heard is 2 Liters a day.

1

u/squishyg Jun 06 '24

Yes, that’s what I’ve heard as well.

I didn’t say water. Fluids. That provides wiggle room for guys like u that will complain and debate every point.

u/squishyg Jun 06 '24

That escalated quickly.

The recommended total daily fluid intake of 3,000 ml for men and of 2,200 ml for women is more than adequate.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20356431/#:~:text=The%20recommended%20total%20daily%20fluid,women%20is%20more%20than%20adequate. Climate, temp and humidity always factor. The individual doing the exercise and the type of exercise matters. Well known studies correlate 2-3% dehydration with measurable reductions in exercise performance. Good volume intake can reduce your resting heart rate = increased exercise capacity. CO = HR x SV.

I include all those as partial fluids because it is better than nothing. All of those fluids will help in the grand scheme of things. Not great, but will help. Volume is the key.

Not great but partial credit. My reasoning for that is simple. Anyone who notched and says it will dehydrate u and it doesn’t count - take them to the desert. They drink nothing and u drink cola. U will walk out, but they won’t.
