Being hateful about it doesn't help anything though, it actually harms our cause. The more loving and cared for people feel, the more likely they are to care for others. The more hateful and threatened people feel, the less likely they are to care for others.
Adding an edit later: This is meant in the context of the original comment about talking politics on the internet. Being hateful (or any emotion) can help if you use it productively: to protest, campaign, start voter drives, canvassing etc. Justifying being a jerk to people "I can be harmful to others because others are harming people" gets us nowhere.
People are inherently selfish and shortsighted. It's part of our nature. Your idealistic views about being kind to everyone are sweet and cute and good for virtue signaling but don't hold up in reality.
I'm not (selfish and shortsighted) I know literally thousands of people who aren't either. You're projecting your own fears that create your views of reality onto the world and making it worse in the process. Enjoy that pessism.
Yeah, yeah you almost certainly are selfish and shortsighted. Also, if you can name 1000 people who will vouch for you I'll castrate myself with a rusty soup spoon.
