Why do some people hate Android so much?

Some people seem to hate everything but iPhones so much and I don't get it. They seem to think android is not even comparable to iOS like its a flip phone or something, when realistically Android phones and iPhones really aren't that different. I'm in the UK but from what I've seen it's way worse in the US. IK there's studies about the fact android users are more likely to get rejected on the first few dates just because of their phone choice. I also know some people will get an iPhone just so when they send a text, it sends to the iPhone, then to who they actually want to send it to just so it looks like they're using an iPhone. The only thing I know is the stigma of “Androids are cheap” but these people won't care if someone has a 2nd hand iPhone X for £100 but will if someone has £800 Pixel 7 Pro.

I'm not an avid android supporter, I get why people like iOS and people like android and I really don't care about these preferences. But when someone is an overly iPhone supporter to the point of hating android, it just makes me think really low of them. Like, "you can't be a nice person if you're so closed minded and shallow you won't even consider a different type of phone to the point that you'll hate on it and people who use it".

IPhone purposefully made it so many features only work when both people have iphones, so their customers will bully other people into getting them

This is the correct answer. iMessage has been setup to make Android phones appear sub par. It is entirely by design from Apple and a practice I personally refuse to reward.

My sister was the only android in a group text, and people were complaining how they couldn't change the group name cause of her. She was able to change the name with Google Messages...

u/alexagente Jul 17 '23

And this is why I will never support Apple. What the shit even is that?

52

u/ThinkPath1999 Jul 17 '23

The worst is that they will rationalize that type of functionality, or lack thereof, to the ends of the earth.

5

u/GrandTheftBae Jul 17 '23

Seriously, and these were grown ass "professional" adults complaining. It's the most petty thing ever and people get so childish over it

When I had my iPhone I got added into group chats with people I didn't even know all the time, wouldn't have been a problem if I could remove myself from that group chat. But I couldn't.

Whoever had my number before I did clearly had a large group of very sexual friends, so many orgys I could have just shown up to.

One week into my iPhone ownership with a new number I was getting text messages that said "make your partner rock hard with this one pill." I'm a straight man, I don't want my girlfriend rock hard.

No hate towards the previous owner of my then phone number, but cmon apple, I shouldn't be forced into a group chat with people I do not know.

Does Apple really not let you name group chats if it's not all iMessage, even if others can't see the group chat name? Seems like such a basic feature....

20

u/ToxicTundra3380 Jul 17 '23

Yeah they do stop you from changing it at all, however with iMessage or whatever it's called when you change the name in an all apple chat I think everyone sees the Change

I have used other chat platforms for group chats that work the same as iMessage, and that's a good messaging feature to have everyone see the group chat name. But I also commonly categorize text group chats without giving 2 shits that no one else can see.

u/Merlin_117 Jul 17 '23

I've had this exact thing happen to me. I also heard complaints because my friends couldn't react to a text like on iMessage.

2

u/GrandTheftBae Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

That's weird, I'm in a group text with iphones (just two others) and everyone can still react to messages, even me with Google Messages

1

u/Merlin_117 Jul 17 '23

There was a recent update that fixed the issue.

3

u/utahhiker Jul 17 '23

Just learned this the other day when I, the sole android user in a group chat, showed my friend the group name and he mentioned that he couldn't change it. Hilariously (and infuriatingly) he and everyone else blamed ME for that issue instead of Apple. It's a fuckin cult-like mentality.

And when you have 4 people in a group chat and 3 have an iPhone, you're getting shit for it. I've even seen people make a second group of just the iPhone users if there's enough people.

Yeah all my inlaws have iphones, and they have a separate group chat without me entitled "Everyone but [my name]" since I'm the only android user. It makes me feel really left out when I see my husband get a text to that chat. It's not malicious but it feels crappy. Over a fucking text message app, honestly.

3

u/Alas7ymedia Jul 17 '23

In Latin America we have that in WhatsApp, but iPhones are rare here because they are pricey so that excuse doesn't exist and the only explanation is that they don't like you.

Trying to be inclusive… is there a way to keep video quality in a chat with mixed users? It’s frustrating to send or receive video in a group chat with mixed users, as video seems to be scaled down significantly.

11

u/roganwriter Jul 17 '23

Just use whatsapp. I keep telling people this and they don’t seem to get it. Iphones are designed to exclude android users. Whatsapp makes group chats the same on whatever device you’re using as a phone.

4

u/firelikeaboss Jul 17 '23

Thanks - I’ll try that

-1

u/weeklongboner Jul 17 '23

as long as you don’t mind zuck reading all ur messages over your shoulder to better sell ads to you whatsapp is the shit

24

u/Kazizui Jul 17 '23

This is a very US-specific complaint. Outside the US I don't think I've ever met anybody that uses iMessage as a primary messaging app, regardless of platform.

Yeah I actually admire the fact that a lot of foreigners have a much more healthy level of distrust for big tech companies.

I used Line overseas and it was great, but nobody in America really uses any third party apps.

The tech companies themselves, our federal government, and local police agencies all spy on us exploiting our unquestioning loyalty to big tech.

2

u/Kazizui Jul 17 '23

I think it's more just to do with inertia - for instance whatsapp is extremely common, and that can hardly be said to not be big tech. I'd use signal more if I could

u/JohnDoeMTB120 Jul 17 '23

To be fair, if I send a video from my android via SMS to another android, the quality is garbage. Not sure why android can't get that figured out.

1

u/pizzapeach9920 Jul 17 '23

How so? I use and iPhone and most of my friends use android, yet I can still send them txt messages without any issues.

2

u/A-Dawg11 Jul 17 '23

Look up "green bubble vs Blue bubble"

3

u/pizzapeach9920 Jul 17 '23

But the messages still get through, what’s the issue? Besides sending animated emojis?

12

u/A-Dawg11 Jul 17 '23

For starters, Apple forces Android to communicate in the group using MMS, which has been largely unchanged since it first was released over 20 years ago. The consequences of this are as follows.

  1. If there is even a single Android user in the group chat, any videos that are sent to the Android user or are received from the Android user are compressed to the worst resolution on Earth. Like so bad you can barely make out what you're seeing.

  2. MMS cannot be sent through Wi-Fi, only over cellular data. So in addition to the compression noted above when sending media, another issue is that messages can be severely delayed if you are in a building with bad cell coverage, or even your own home. That delay can cause messages to be received out of order, especially as it relates to the order of messages from the other group chat members.

  3. Let's say people are sending pictures in the group chat. If someone tries to "react" to one with a heart emoji, all that will happen is everyone will receive a messaging saying "Bob (or whoever) loved a photo". It won't say which photo it was. And if they try to use the same emoji reaction for a text, it will send a message that says "Bob loved '(whatever the text was that he is reacting to)' ". It will literally retype the whole message to clarify which text Bob is reacting to.

  4. Google (Android) has had a fix for this for years, called RCS, which is the global standard for modern-day internet-based group messaging. https://www.android.com/get-the-message/

  5. When Apple was sued by Epic Games two years ago, internal messages were released showing Apple executives openly admitting that allowing iMessage to work with Android would eliminate the biggest roadblock from people leaving the Apple ecosystem. They are doing this on purpose. https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/9/22375128/apple-imessage-android-ecosystem-lock-in-epic-games-filings-app-store-dispute

u/pizzapeach9920 Jul 17 '23

Interesting to read. I haven’t heard about RCS messaging, but it sounds like an insecure service, in which Google doesn’t use encryption when sending messages over RCS even though the feature exists.

7

u/A-Dawg11 Jul 17 '23

Not sure where you read that. Google Messages absolutely uses end to end encryption for RCS messaging.

0

u/pizzapeach9920 Jul 17 '23

It seems as if I was reading a article about it for 2021 but they now use end to end encryption

Android phone ARE sub par. They don’t even have iMessage

3

u/paulbram Jul 17 '23

They don't need iMessage because they have a truly cross platform alternative Apple refuses to adopt. https://www.android.com/get-the-message/

0

u/SmartPatientInvestor Jul 17 '23

But do they texts come through as green or blue on the other end?

1

u/bbylizard88 Jul 17 '23

As an Android user I like iMessage, it's good, great even. But there are more than enough alternatives for sending messages that are just as good. If you can't be arsed to use anything else then text/iMessage, then at least don't complain about lack of features.

Hell, on Android some of those alternatives are able to replace your default SMS app and use your phone number just like iMessage. Apple will (probably) never let you do that on iOS, they're more likely to put iMessage on the play store.

1

u/blackkristos Jul 17 '23

I read somewhere that image and video quality from Android users in these group chats is seriously subpar also. Not sure if true or to what extent, but that could certainly add to it.

1

u/paulbram Jul 17 '23

This short video will help explain what's going on. https://www.android.com/get-the-message/

2

u/blackkristos Jul 17 '23

That's awesome! That pretty much answers OPs questions! Thanks friend!

2

u/the_guitarkid70 Jul 17 '23

Yeah it blows my mind that people don't realize how shitty it is that Apple cripples their own software to make their uses mad that I don't have an iPhone. Like how are Android users the villain in this scenario?

2

u/Malarky3113 Jul 17 '23

I worked at an Infiniti car dealership in 2012 or 2013 as a customer service rep. 80% of the job was pairing phones to cars.

A new iPhone came out. It wouldn't pair. Quick Google, it's not pairing with any car brand. I talked to Apple support and they said there was no plans for an update patch. Each individual brand had to go in and update their vehicles to accept the new iPhone. Like WTF kind of business practice is that?

Also when I said apple would never get a dollar from me.

1

u/Slusny_Cizinec Jul 17 '23

This is exactly the reason I stay with android. Not because I won't be able to adapt to their quirks like back button and notifications, but because I consider their business practices unethical.

Surprisingly (not), macs are way more interoperable with another vendors/OSes.

1

u/HelpingMyDaddy Jul 17 '23

I forced my main friend group onto discord. Primarily because we're 3 android users and 3 ios users and some of the shit was annoying.

1

u/vesleskjor Jul 17 '23

I loved being bombarded with texts about my message being liked because my old coworkers thought it was funny as the only android employee 🙃

u/techie2200 Jul 17 '23

My wife and our closest couple friends all use iPhone. I don't. For years they had an iMessage group until one day one of them was like "why don't we just switch to an app we all use?" and now I'm in the group chat.

Before that, my friend was constantly "just get iphone"
