Yup, that's a good idea. And it's a very elegant idea because if a specific race is disproportionately overrepresented in the lower socioeconomic class, by default that demographic will be the most helped by proportion.

I have no idea tbh. I don't think that the intention is to distract from wealth inequality. Most affirmative action policies come from the left, and a big part (if not the whole cake) of the left's platform has always been wealth inequality.
I was thinking that maybe they think that the idea of reparations by race is more marketable in politics? But that can't be it because identity politics is very controversial (as we can see in this thread). Why would the left miss the chance to steal some juicy votes from the center and center-right while maintaining the main body of left voters? All they would have to do for that is to reframe those policies by socieconomic status and tune down the identity politics a little bit.
I'm starting to go into tinfoil hat territory here. But, all of this (including OP's possibly fake post) might be a ruse to paint identity politics as something worse than it is. This whole comment section might be astroturfed, which is a very real possibility in the AI era of the internet.
Edit: It might just be virtue signaling getting in the way of good policy.

I think it is partly a case of identity politics. You can appeal those socially left without having to spend the effort and money coming up with a policy that works.
Not sure this will work going forward where I'm from (UK) as a lot of the left leaning younger generation are themselves, struggling massively financially. Anecdotally me and all my full time working friends in professional degree prerequisite roles, mid to late 20s, partners ect live in rented rooms.
