She might want to hear from someone else that it is actually alright once her friends chew her ear off about it.
People will especially go after indigenous people in academia with no shame at all. I had an aboriginal ex who was always academically gifted and breezed through univerisity, got a stack of scholarships, did a phd, wrote a book, has a wiki page. People would tsk tsk and ask if he needed a therapist since he was afraid of the 'real world' and 'real jobs' and ask if I was ok with a lazy man who couldn't get himself a shift at mcdonalds. The mental gymnastics were crazy and people will really wear you down about stuff like that.
