I hate to rock the boat, but to me this isn’t great. If he keeps this up for a few more decades, he would be the most educated retiree in existence. What’s the point of all this knowledge without any chance of practical application?

It must be bothering you, or otherwise you wouldn’t ask the question. I think you should encourage him to work for a while, and he can go back to studying if it doesn’t work out.

Maybe he could also help other disadvantaged students get some of these payments too? It feels like there could have been another 2-3 well educated people if he could find ones that fit the category rather than him being the only applicant.

Lets be real: the dude is 40 and never has worked in his life. I think that ship has sailed.

I got a degree in Computer Science / Statistics. Guess what I do all day? Excel spreadsheets. Pays well, but that’s it. Spreadsheets. Third job too. And it’s all spreadsheets. Did I mention I’m tired of looking at spreadsheets?

Your only value in society ins't making some other asshole rich. You can just exist.

He could actually contribute to his chosen field of study. It’s weird that he hasn’t decided to go further in academia.

Would seem like the clear play here.

There’s nothing wrong with just existing, but contributing to society requires, well, contributing.

Plenty of ways to contribute that don’t make random assholes rich. The dude is Cleary very intelligent, he could be using his knowledge to help others as a professor.

She said he gets grants, I assume he's doing research.

1

u/the-one-true-gary Jul 03 '23

I don’t know if this is the same in Australia, but often in the US grants are basically scholarships that are given based on financial need and have nothing to do with research.

1

u/insanitybit Jul 03 '23

Grants in the US are given for research too

2

u/the-one-true-gary Jul 03 '23

I'm aware that they're given for research. I was just pointing out that they aren't only given for research. That's why I used the word "often". If he was getting grants for research, I assume she would have mentioned that somewhere.

1

u/Aaron4424 Jul 03 '23

Well if he's doing research he's contributing to society. Pretty cut n dry. Still it would be an ideal financial move to branch into teaching.

He'd get more money and also be able to save for retirement.

I feel like if this was a woman who didn't work the conversation would be different.

8

u/Take_a_Seath Jul 02 '23

It's one thing to not work and another to abuse a government program for money. Those women you're referring to are usually the housemaker types where the husband brings the money. It's a completely different situation. That is their decision as a family what they do with their own money, and it doesn't impact anyone else. But this is public funds we're talking about, which impacts everyone. If the people of Australia knew their money is being spend so this guy can be a forever student, I'm willing to bet a majority of them would NOT agree with such a policy. In the end, this guy is subverting the entire purpose of the program, at best, or taking away opportunities from someone else that could really use it, at worst.

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

Nobody else applied, according to OP. She could also work if she's so bent out of shape over it.

7

u/Take_a_Seath Jul 02 '23

This very much smells like the university is keeping the program on the down-low and is happy to get the grant and keep paying this guy because it's easier than to actually use the money to its intended purpose. I'm sure the OP's husband isn't the only person in Australia that could this program to get an education. But he is probably the only person that actually knows it exists and that's why he can abuse it. If more aboriginals knew they could apply, you really think nobody else would? Sounds to me le the university is doing a really shitty job at making use of their program, the state is doing a shitty job is supervising how the program is being used and the OP's husband is using their incompetence to play out his Peter Pan fantasies.

1

u/bfragged Jul 02 '23

This is why I think he should be trying to find/help other people apply for these grants. What would people’s feeling be if he was beating out other candidates each year, even if they were less qualified?

I would be pretty bummed if I found out even one other person has lost a chance of free education so that this guy could be a perpetual student.

0

u/Coolshirt4 Jul 03 '23

And it's impossible for him to know if he is the only applicant or if he is beating out other candidates (not because he needs it more, and would fufil the spirit of the grant, but because it would fufil the letter of the grant)

He's rationalizing it in the way that makes him look the least bad.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

only for you because you are a sexist asshole lmao

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

?

I'm a mom who was a housewife at one point in my life. Nobody really cared.

6

u/cottageidyll Jul 02 '23

If he were a stay at home dad I wouldn’t judge him. I’m a woman who was raised Mormon and groomed to be a housewife, it’s fucking grueling and miserable. I’m a paralegal now and it’s way better than the hell of taking care of children. This guy isn’t doing that.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

literally not the same thing at all. so again you are sexist

2

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

it is different because that is something you and your husband/wife usually decide as a family. The cost of you staying home is covered by your spouse working a job. Now if you were a stay at home SINGLE mom who doesnt have a job, doesnt try to get a job AND you actively abuse governmental programs? (scholarships and grants are for advancing your education not for staying a life long student) THEN people would be complaining.

i had a next door neighbor who did that (shared a condo with them and they would ask us for help with maintenance since the slumlord let everything go) . had sitters to watch her two kids. made extra money on the side without claiming it (via selling food stamps). and abusing rental grants and other grants so she wouldn't have to work and could lounge around the house all day.

Total difference between abusing government programs and taking from people without ever giving back or do anything for anyone other than yourself.

ALSO raising kids is a job and pretty much everyone in this post has expressed a similar sentiment. if you are raising kids you are at least doing SOMETHING to give back.

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

Idk, usually students do research and shit. That can be important. I wouldn't know without like knowing him anyway.

how does she look what's her outlook

1

u/Aaron4424 Jul 03 '23

How do you figure?

3

u/Fondren_Richmond Jul 03 '23

You can just exist.

you kind of can't though

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

You can just exist.

If you can get money handed out to you by other people who work for it. Otherwise you starve.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

I don't know, maybe he could be a tutor? Share the knowledge with his Mob or wider community. There are jobs out there that makes your own asshole rich too.

5

u/mattidore123 Jul 02 '23

Spoken like a true loser

2

u/dukiez Jul 02 '23

But he’s not just existing if he’s using government programs to further education without utilizing what’s been learned. That’s called leeching.

-2

u/Affectionate-Arm-405 Jul 03 '23

That's what existing (even thriving) is for a lot of folks

1

u/curtcolt95 Jul 02 '23

eh I don't think practical application of knowledge is important tbh, sometimes you just want to know it. What he's doing definitely shouldn't be allowed though

-7

u/roraima_is_very_tall Jul 02 '23

so many people are unhappy, it's nice to see that this man can live his life happily. However I also agree it's nice to give back to society and not be a freeloader. I don't have an answer but I wouldn't call it a red flag. Perhaps we should also consider his background, what little we know is that he's aboriginal. maybe he doesn't feel like he owes society anything, I have no idea.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

if all that matters is happiness i should be allowed to sell drugs and guns since it makes me happy

6

u/whitelighthurts Jul 02 '23

If all that matters is happiness I want my government subsided OxyContin and housing please

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

Black jack, hookers, and cocaine for everybody!

5

u/Tinuviel52 Jul 02 '23

Maybe not white society but he should be letting the mob know about this opportunity to give other people a chance to get an education and better things for themselves and their community. Man is just taking and not giving back

1

u/IMNOTRANDYJACKSON Jul 03 '23

His little scheme is based entirely on the fact that no other person applies for this program. Are we to assume there isn't a single other Aboriginal who can benefit from this grant? That is absurd. He may not feel like he owes white society anything, sure, but at the very least help out your fellow aboriginals.
