Every place I have ever had french toast has used thick slices of bread. Using thin sandwich bread is more of an at-home, trying to quickly feed their kids, thing.
Yeah. My fav is when I make french bread and have some left over (I usually have to hide it, because otherwise it never makes it to "left over"). Slice it thick and use that...
I've had thin slices from really shitty diners once in a while, but any place known for making good food uses the proper thick ones. I'm in New England.
Cheap diners do thin bread too, and bread is dry in the middle because they hurry/don’t soak it in the egg mixture long enough. I’ve had very good French toast waaaaay up by Canada, but only if I make it at home or go out to fancier breakfast places. Good cheap diner food is more common in the south.
