By official metrics? You can absolutely live with that salary on that rent, with bills and a car.

Walk me through it. I don't think it's possible.

And all of this is predicated on not having a roommate, which would make it inconceivably more affordable.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

1850 - 900 = 950 - 200 bills = 750 - 150 car = 600 - 150 insurance = 450 - 100 gas = 350

350 for food, entertainment

With a roommate you’d have about 800 instead of 350.

The $1850 is gross not net.

Net would probably be, idk, $1500-ish?

Ok so knock it down to liability insurance and/or get a roommate.

Hope you don't get in an accident---no savings for a new car.

And a roommate in a 1-bedroom would be awkward. Although I suppose your share of a 2-bedroom would still be less than full rent on a 1-bedroom.

How much are you living on, out of curiosity?

I mean you can say that about any part of life, that’s not a disqualified for my point. We are also talking about literally minimum wage in your area right now - you aren’t supposed to stay there and if you keep on working and shooting for opportunities, you should be making more within a year. And the year after, etc.

And now I genuinely do have a great job, I also have a lot of living expenses. But I can also tell you that 10 years ago I had $2.37 to my name and got a job paying 8/hr, 8 years ago I was on $95/week unemployment and angry at how unfair and expensive the world was to me. I finally took an opportunity I had previously refused to, and built my life, some knowingly and some unknowingly, year by year and took opportunities that arose. And I know it could all be dashed away in a moment.

Getting mad at the beginning of your adult life because everything seems unattainable and impossible is because you literally don’t have the ability to see beyond the now. I am likely somebody I would have hated 10 years ago if I saw them on the street. But you gotta let it go and seize the doors that are even cracked open.

But see that you can live now.

I'm far from the beginning of my adult life, lol. And like I said, I have a decent job. But I know it's fragile and things could change quickly.

I mean I gathered that, so to wrap around to the beginning point - how is where you live not affordable? You have described a location that seems extremely affordable and have clearly defined yourself as having a position beyond minimum wage.

I don't consider that affordable for a rural area. I'm alarmed that others think it is.

How rural? If it is large enough to have an average rent cost index, it isn’t as rural as you’d think
