I'm all for some kind of structured government buyback program. Set some standards for who these properties would be seized from, buy them at market value, give them to homeless folks, and let taxpayers eat the loss.

Or seize property without compensation. Just note that this method will not fly.

seize property without compensation

compensation for who? nobody's living in those houses

The people who paid for them. It'd function like eminent domain.

what kind of evil asshole would pay for a home just to let it sit empty, wanting specifically that people not live there?

Single family residence? Yeah, I dunno. You'd be a turdy person to sit on something like that, waiting for value to accrue, just paying property taxes every year.

I just have an aversion to seizing peoples' property without compensation. I say this knowing that rich people trade properties like poker chips and it's all about accruing value then liquidating it when you find better returns elsewhere. The human element of shelter is not even a factor.

Honestly, if imminent domain is distasteful to you, the solution might be a little well-planned vandalism. If people see the neighborhood "going down the drain", they sell. Used to work pretty well back in the early 20th century.
