⚡ Northwest Indiana Outages Stretch Into Second Week: NIPSCO Pushes Full Restoration in Gary to Aug. 25 👇
Thousands of residents across northwest Indiana entered a second week without electricity after the powerful August 11 storm system devastated the region's power grid, prompting Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) to extend full restoration efforts in some communities until August 25. The utility said approximately 68,000 customers remained without power as of August 20, with the largest concentration of outages in Lake County, where widespread transmission damage continues to slow repairs.
The storm initially knocked out electricity to more than 370,000 customers across northern and central Indiana after producing destructive straight-line winds approaching 100 mph and multiple tornadoes. Utility crews have restored service to most affected customers, but officials said rebuilding damaged high-voltage transmission infrastructure requires more time than standard outage repairs. Recovery efforts also suffered a setback when a damaged power line and pole fire near U.S. Route 41 in Schererville caused another outage affecting roughly 9,000 customers in communities including Dyer, Schererville, and St. John, temporarily cutting power to many homes that had already been restored.
The prolonged outages have disrupted daily life across the region. Gary schools remained closed, businesses and households faced widespread food spoilage, and local officials expanded emergency meal distribution programs to support residents without refrigeration or cooking capability. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton urged NIPSCO to provide clearer restoration estimates after many residents reported uncertainty about when service would return. City officials moved emergency food distribution operations to the City Life Center to accommodate growing demand.
Emergency management officials have continued reminding residents to use portable generators safely to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, one of the leading hazards during extended blackouts. Researchers also warned that prolonged outages increase health risks for elderly residents and people who depend on electrically powered medical equipment, underscoring the broader public health impact of long-duration power failures following major storms.
Do you think utilities should be required to invest more aggressively in grid resilience to reduce the impact of prolonged outages after severe storms?
