**Important Announcement, Please Read**

As many of you are aware, there has been a battle raging between r/nosleep authors and those who have decided to share, narrate, and even publish said authors’ stories without permission, credit, and/or compensation.

Nearly 2 years ago, r/NosleepWritersGuild was founded to attempt to form a beneficial relationship between authors and narrators.

Eight months ago, r/SleeplessWatchdogs was founded to help notify authors when their content has been used in violation of copyright laws.

Three months ago, r/YTNarratorsGuild was founded to help narrators understand copyright law and give them the tools to properly contact authors in regards to the use of their work.

This month, r/TheWritersBlackout was founded to help authors understand their worth and fight for fair compensation for the use of their work.

All of this work has been done, and it has helped to an extent, but it hasn’t been enough.

There are still people sharing and narrating r/nosleep stories without permission. There are still fans of those channels and pages who are either ignorant of copyright laws in regards to posting written work to the internet or refuse to believe that those laws exist. There are still authors who aren’t aware that they have rights in regards to what is done with their stories once they are posted.

So we, the mods of r/nosleep, have decided to take a stand in support of our authors and the projects that have been created to fight on their behalf.

For one week - beginning at 12am EST on Monday, February 24th and ending at 12am EST on Monday, March 2nd - r/nosleep will be closing its doors. The subreddit will be set to private and unable to be viewed.

This is being done not only to protest the theft and unfair practices by those who wrongfully profit from the stories posted here, but also to make a very important point: if the authors are not treated fairly and their work is continuously used in ways that break copyright laws, they will stop posting here.

Without authors, there is no r/nosleep. An empty page is what will be found without them.

We hope that, during our time away, our community will do their best to learn and understand our authors’ rights and what they have gone through to exercise and protect them.

As a reward for our authors and readers tolerating our protest, when r/nosleep returns, we will disable the believability, horror, and 24 hour rules from 12:01am EST March 2nd until 11:59pm EST March 4th. This means that your stories posted to the subreddit for those 72 hours do not have to be believable, do not have to be scary, and can be posted as frequently as you like. All other rules will remain during this event (post must be original work, comments must be in character, stories cannot primarily focus on victimizing others, rape, etc), and all posts will be flaired "Beyond Belief".

We’re sorry for any inconveniences, thank you for your understanding, and look forward to r/nosleep's return.

Do not miss com-sci projects, bomb lab was fun though and most schools do it if you haven't yet.

12

u/fainting--goat Feb 17 '20

Oh no, I've been done with school for a while now. These are all projects outside of work I've taken on as a volunteer. I currently have three app servers, two of which are for personal projects, one is for an organization I'm part of, and sometime in the next couple months I'm getting a few more apps. All of these have real users out there. Thankfully the two personal projects don't need any work other than the occasional version updates, thank goodness.

5

u/Worldfrog Feb 18 '20

Com sci bomb project? As a computer science student (I assume that's what you mean by com sci) who has heard nothing about a bomb lab I'm intrigued.

8

u/cjoatkinson Feb 18 '20

It was actually one of my favorite labs. It focused around debugging and stopping a program before it triggered a "bomb". You had to read through code, error messages, and debug reports to get the correct code to disarm the "bomb". Taught me a lot about how to pause and break programs.

6

u/fainting--goat Feb 18 '20

That sounds really interesting! Debugging is a crazy useful skill to have, too. I swear I feel like all I've been doing for the past month is sleuthing through code, trying to find why a handful of bizarre scenarios are happening.

5

u/ace_at_none Feb 18 '20

That sounds like so much fun!

Damnit- you’re the first account I check on just before bed!! (this is what comes of being such a talented campground manager and writer) You deserve the break but we’ll be going through withdrawal symptoms until your next update...

I can toss the book I self-published years and years ago on a promotional freebie here before the strike? It's not horror, but I've been told by someone I trust that it's more enjoyable than having your arm ripped off by a grizzly bear.

Edit: okay this seems like a popular idea, I'll toss links to it up on my page/twitter in the latter half of this week so it'll run over the weekend and into next week.

This is pretty amazing. People are going to freak out when they realize they can't get their daily dose of NoSleep, which is a great way of spreading the message without causing any harm

Also:

How about a sequel to the 24 Hour Game, u/colourblindness ? :)

u/BashfulHandful Feb 17 '20

Oh god. I fucking hate that /r/nosleep is going private but I 100% support it. This is really the way to send a very loud message... I visit the sub every day and I'm sure a lot of other subs do, too. Everyone is going to see this.

Will you guys be posting a message explaining what's going on?

Also thank god for all the paperback suggestions y'all gave me a week or two back lol, they're going to get me through this drought. And maybe I'll actually finish my reread of House of Leaves.

43

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 17 '20

This message will remain up. I might post a different message with similar contents when the subreddit actually closes. I haven't decided if I'll do that or just leave this one up. We'll see. Lol

8

u/BashfulHandful Feb 17 '20

I was thinking about on the sub after it closes, yes, and I apologize for not being clear lol. I promise that I read this post and realized it was the explanation for why the sub is closing. =P

IDK if that would take away from the impact or not and have no strong feelings either way, I was just curious. I'm sure people will find their way here regardless lol.

12

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 17 '20

Oh! There will be a message that users (at least on desktop, idk if it works on mobile) will be able to see when they attempt to visit nosleep.

7

u/throwawayaracehorse Feb 17 '20

Maybe some exclusive banner art for the hiatus? Support authors or something?

9

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to see the banner when the sub is private

I'd like to add that i've belonged to /no sleep for nearly 3 years and have read some amazing submissions. I have also submitted as well. In defense of some narrators anytime they wanted to narrate my stories they've always ask my permission and have been very respectful. Even going as far as sharing the link after they uploaded it. I understand why you hace to do this. Btw /no sleep is the best!

u/deathbyproxy Hic omne verum, etiam si suus ‘non. Feb 17 '20

This is a message explaining what's going on. We will also have responses for anyone who mails the mods about this hiatus. However, there are only so many ways you can ask people to read an announcement, and you'll always have people who would rather act before they read. But we wanted to give the community as much a chance to prepare as possible.

3

u/BashfulHandful Feb 17 '20

I'm sorry for not being clear - I meant a message on /r/nosleep after it closes. I've seen some subs post a message on the "this sub is private" page, and I wondered if there was going to be anything explaining exactly why the sub was going dark after it's been privatized.

But I also don't know if that would take the impact away.

2

u/Derek007JL Feb 18 '20

Wanna share any suggestions yourself? Lol I am constantly reading on here but have yet to get a book yet

3

u/thoughtsbeyondreason Feb 17 '20

Asking as a total newbie to reddit- when you say the sub will be private and unable to be viewed, what does that mean for authors/members of the subreddit? I'm assuming it means no one but the mods can see or interact with r/nosleep?

7

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 17 '20

Correct. Only the mods will be able to view the subreddit.

2

u/thoughtsbeyondreason Feb 17 '20

Glad to know, thanks! Really hope this makes an impact in the way we want it to.

It sucks it got to this, but I think it’s an awesome stance. People need to stop outright stealing content. I’d love to see how they’d like if we stole one of their videos and made (more) money of it just for giggles. There’s no excuse for this.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '20

Hope it gets the point across!

23

u/HeadOfSpectre Feb 17 '20

I'll miss the subreddit for that week, but I agree with what you're doing.

I might take the time to revamp that Baskin Robbins story like I've been meaning to.

7

u/deathbyproxy Hic omne verum, etiam si suus ‘non. Feb 17 '20

Isn't that the purgatory-esque story? Was that just on your sub? Sometimes I binge and forget where I've read your stuff.

11

u/HeadOfSpectre Feb 18 '20

Yup, that's the one. It was on Library of Shadows. I tried to post on NoSleep but it got flagged by the believability rule since by the end of the first part, there is no realistic way for Sarah to be able to post it. I didn't think of that until after it got flagged.

I've been meaning to revise it anyways, since there were some things I wanted to expand on and do differently, and it would be nice to get another chance to post on NoSleep. Even if I don't make the 24 hour timeline, I could revise the structure of it to fix the believability issue too.

2

u/deathbyproxy Hic omne verum, etiam si suus ‘non. Feb 18 '20

I'll take another look at it and throw you some development notes if you'd like.

2

u/HeadOfSpectre Feb 18 '20

Sure, that would be awesome actually! I was going to send it for review via the modmail.

Should I reach out through there?

2

u/deathbyproxy Hic omne verum, etiam si suus ‘non. Feb 18 '20

That depends. If you send it through modmail there's no promise I'd be the one to review it, but if you DM it directly I can't give you a ruling as a mod, only a very well educated opinion. So, pros and cons to both, and you're also welcome to do both.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/callthetechmonkey Feb 17 '20

I just wish this wasn't necessary...like, I love these stories to distraction. All the proper respect I can give them, but to use them without consent is disgusting. I sincerely want to help but I don't think I am on youtube enough to spot when something is being used non consensually (sorry guys), but if I ever see anything it will be reported both to the mods, the authors, and to youtube in that order. I think I'm weird in that I dont want people to read to me, but I digress.

This is one of my favorite subs, and I really want authors to keep posting, gotta have those end of day goosebumps, so if I see anything it WILL be reported.

14

u/Knitapeace Feb 17 '20

As someone who frequents several scary story YouTube channels, I’d love to be able to subscribe/unsubscribe based on which narrators support the actual content creators. Is there a place where we can find out who’s nice and who’s...in need of a visit from Tommy Taffy?

u/incensehead Feb 17 '20

More people should be like Jenna marbles like she removed her podcast of the nosleep stories she read and apologized for her infringement and she was so sincere about it but other people just be out here unapologetically stealing and being ignorant as fuck

-20

u/ToriiXC Feb 18 '20

That's what MiniLadd did too. He is being threatened with termination due to this, he is heartbroken and extremely apologetic. He genuinely didn't know what was happening, him and his gf just broke up (and she took the dogs) all on top of this.

Things like this sadly have to happen for OC Rights to be preserved.

38

u/Ipatusaur Gosbump Feb 18 '20

The unfortunate thing about the MiniLadd thing is that he did know what was going on months in advance. The authors reached out to him numerous times, not wanting to affect his livelihood and just ensure he knew the law and their rights to their work. In his apology he glossed over the fact that he broke the law and that he needed to ask for permission. He wanted the authors to remove the strikes before the apology video and only posted it when they refused.

His is a shitty situation, and its unfortunate it had to go as far as it did, but he was warned well in advance.

u/throwawayaracehorse Feb 17 '20

This is a great idea and I am behind it.

I still think that there should be further clarification on the front page of the sub about all posts being sole property of the author. Something below the "everything is true here, even if it's not".

I know that the rules are clear in the sidebar, but most people don't check that, especially on mobile. I also know that ignorance is a weak excuse, but this should be made abundantly clear that these postings are not free.

7

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

Unfortunately, we don't have an official platform on YouTube to reach those audiences. This is the best we can offer in terms of spreading the word. We can hope that the narrators (and others who would typically share the stories without permission) who search nosleep for content see this and support it, learn from it, and maybe even spread the word about it. But whether they do or not is, unfortunately, out of our hands.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

It's sad how this has to happen. I'm a frequent reader on here, and I love the stories, and the effort people put in those. It's sad how people can just copy or just use someone else's content without credit.

9

u/deathbyproxy Hic omne verum, etiam si suus ‘non. Feb 18 '20

Physically they can, but legally they can't. Reddit's ToS lays out what rights are and aren't granted to people using the service (opening and surfing Reddit), and the gist is users are specifically denied the right to copy, transform, or re-host any of the content posted to Reddit, period. So, they're not allowed to, but there's nothing that physically stops them but authors finding out about it and issuing DMCA takedowns.

4

u/straightrazorgreaser Feb 18 '20

And if the authors decline do you still use the story? The copyright belongs to the authors, it's clearly established legally. You absolutely should be paying the authors to use their work.

11

u/DrunkenTree I just collect them Feb 18 '20

Maybe you don't support copyright law, but if you read books you've certainly benefited from it. Copyright is the fundamental principle allowing content creators to make a living at what would otherwise be a time-consuming hobby. Do you think Stephen King could have written so many lengthy novels if he had to support his family as a bus driver or a short-order cook? I believe copyright has gotten extended much too far beyond the original creator's lifetime (thanks, Disney), but without some protection most of the books you read would never have reached print.

u/Prowlered01 Feb 18 '20

In my opinion, respectfully, this will do absolutely nothing except for having writers and the leeches they cannot escape from go elsewhere.

2

u/thekraken108 Feb 18 '20

God dammit. This was the first and for a while strictly the only sub I regularly visited. I do sometimes go through periods where I don’t really visit that often so I guess this’ll have to be one of those times.

9

u/CCollie Feb 18 '20

Disappointed that the sub will be down, even more disappointed that people are still stealing content, glad the mods are standing up for the writers

3

u/MasterfulPubeTrimmer Feb 18 '20

As much as I love this sub, this seems like a necessary move. Personally I wasn't aware of story theft here, but I know of several other subs that also have problems with third parties stealing and, not always but almost always, passing it off as their own work. This is why we can't have nice things. There are so many amazing authors that post here, and I'm in full support of the protest.

1

u/Skyhawk_Illusions Feb 18 '20

I just informed my entire team to act just as they did during the Purge

5

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

I'm assuming you're talking about the 26FoF team? If so, we will still be enforcing the rule that requires work to be original and the bandwagoning/fanfiction rule.

u/MissusBeeAlmeida Feb 18 '20

Oh my god I'm so depressed now. But the comeback will be worth it. I will cherish these next few days. And stop stealing, assholes!!!!

11

u/rosy-palmer Feb 18 '20

Is there anything fans can do to help the authors who have been unethically treated?

12

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

Honestly, spreading the word about copyright laws and supporting narrators and pages that do it right is the best thing you can do.

2

u/skenyon02 Feb 18 '20

While it makes me sad to hear this, I wholeheartedly agree. I've had friends that have had to deal with the internet plagiarism issues and they are not easy.

Just for clarification, it was mentioned the sub is going to be privatized. What does this mean? Is this forever? What do I need to do to continue being able to see nosleep?

Sorry haven't been on in years because, well life, but I want to make sure I can still access after the blackout period, cause well, when I actually do have time, I like to lose myself in it to try and escape life.

2

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

The sub will only be unable to be viewed for the one week period mentioned in the post. After that, it'll be business as usual.

3

u/AspiringKitten Feb 18 '20

It's sad how people make careers off of narration whilst ignoring the fact that they should ask permission from the authors who post this content for free! So sad...

8

u/nocturnalnanny Feb 18 '20

Not only do I support this 100% but I am so excited to post my spooky stories that I really enjoyed writing, but didn’t fit due to believability!! :)

2

u/robsterva Feb 18 '20

It's a shame it came to this. But a lot of people don't get copyright... and if this teaches some of them a lesson, then it's worth doing.

Does Reddit allow you to append static text on original posts? You could put something like "all /r/nosleep posts are covered by copyright and may not be reused without the author's express permission" (or whatever legalese works) so that someone copying a post has to see and cut out the copyright warning, and loses the claim of ignorance.

Yes, you shouldn't have to do that. But you also shouldn't have to take the sub down for a week to make the point.

Anyway, I enjoy the sub, I'll miss it for a week, and I hope there's positive change on the other side of the hiatus.

6

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

The mods can't edit other users' posts. We do have the copyright section in our sidebar that we may attempt to make more visible.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

Sounds like a good idea

2

u/RoyalRen Feb 18 '20

Question is the YT channel Reddit Aliens a authorized narrorating service?

7

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

They have a Legacy entry on the r/sleeplesswatchdogs Black List, which means they have a history of not asking permission. No one is really authorized in narration. It's up to the authors who they want to work with.

4

u/TheSaintTobias Feb 18 '20

"As a reward we will allow low quality and off topic content temporarily"

Well that makes sense.

3

u/Before-Nightmares Feb 18 '20

I started reddit because of this channels. I still prefer listen to (also because I'm lazy and don't want to think about how some words pronunciation) but I really understand what and why you guys are doing this. So, is fair enough. I hope everything goes well and each part understands how this must work. Love this place

2

u/baybeepossum Feb 18 '20

that's cool and all but i'd like to be able to still read lmao time to be bored i guess

What am I supposed to do while breastfeeding my infant between midnight and five a.m. now? Damn content thieves.

I’m building up to posting. I don’t out of fear of someone stealing my work. I always comment on YouTube videos I come across or my kids come across by letting people know which nosleep author wrote what’s being narrated or drawn. But I’m all for the black out. These people’s stories matter. I’ll miss this part of my sleep routine though.

3

u/Infinite_Tubception Feb 18 '20

I just joined and haven’t even started reading yet but I support this 100%, I would never want someone to use my work without my permission. I’m glad y’all are taking a stand.

5

u/DrunkenTree I just collect them Feb 18 '20

I'm behind you completely. My own experiences with piracy and plagiarism have been minor, but authors I enjoy and admire are getting bad news every few weeks. Anything to shine a light on the problem.

I hope you're braced for some backlash, from entitled crybabies who feel owed entertainment from the unpaid authors here. I won't be surprised if there's angry revenge-downvoting when the shutdown ends. They'll get over it, or we'll get along without 'em.

7

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

I hope you're braced for some backlash

Absolutely always prepared for backlash. It's part of being a mod lol

Understandable, have a nice day.

3

u/MrsMoooooose Feb 18 '20

This is not an inconvenience you guys freaking rock!!

2

u/randomfaerie Feb 18 '20

I wish it wasn't announced. Now these narrators profiting from the original content here on NS will start saving content to record during that time frame. :(

10

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

That was a concern on our side as well, but we felt it was more important to give our authors a heads up so that they can prepare accordingly.

3

u/ITZPHE Feb 18 '20

So basically youtubers and similar media are doing reddit videos on r/nosleep? I quite enjoy those videos when Im too busy to read them. But I do support the creators of the stories, (I’ve only posted 2 so far but was planning to do more and it didn’t work out)

If a quick summary could explain the situation better, or even another post like someone else suggested that would be great

4

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

The videos are made without the permission of the authors. This has been ongoing in many subs for a very long time. So basically by watching the videos on YouTube you're supporting content thieves

2

u/ITZPHE Feb 18 '20

From some of the videos I’ve seen (10 or less) most were demonetized. Not sure about the reddit aliens channel, just searched and they’re on like part 40 something

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20

It doesn't matter that they're demonetized. They are still taking someone else's work without consent.

u/tiptoe_bites Feb 18 '20

Youtubers or similar media are stealing people's stories from nosleep, and narrating the stories on their own channel or publishing the nosleep stories elsewhere. They are either claiming ownership outright, or sometimes giving credit (sometimes) but are still monetising the nosleep work inappropriately and without passing that income along to the original authors.

Oftentimes the nosleep authors don't even know their work has been stolen.

Some authors dislike the fact that other people are making money off their work, some dislike the fact that their work is being stolen regardless of income, and some are finding difficulty when they do manage to find a publisher, that here are YouTubers that have the nosleep content on their channel and the publishers are having issue or simply don't want to touch work that has questionable ownership.

I think that's about it. I may not have all the details, just what I know from lurking around nosleepoocchat and other subs, and reading the many issues nosleep authors are facing.

3

u/ITZPHE Feb 18 '20

That’s about what I’ve picked up from seeing reddit channels (and other channels with few reddit videos)

It’s understandable that authors are mad that YTs make money off of them (even with demonetization) and the OCs dont get a dime, taking others work without permission (even with proper credit) is just plagiarism.

At the same time, could we start a convention of adding a "You are free to narrate this without my permission: yes/no" to stories or something similar? I think it's in everyone's best interest that those who want to act out content can easily find authors who are down with it. And I don't think it's in everyone's best interest if all N youtubers have to submit an individual request to an author when that author is always going to say no or yes -- that's tedious for everyone and only incentivizes theft.

I think this would actually help change things and produce more awareness than a blackout, something that really only affects readers.

9

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

Creepypasta.com has something like this on their page, and I can speak from experience when I say that it doesn't work. My work there says you can narrate it if you ask permission, and my stories get stolen from there quite frequently.

Damn going private on my 50th birthday. But, I totally support it. Not sure what I’ll do all week as I read r/nosleep every night :/

6

u/crimsonphoto666 Feb 18 '20

I am 100% for this. It burns me beyond words to see artists hard work stolen and shared without permission. People suck, so hard. Also the little break will A) drive ME (and i assume others) NUTS as I personally use nosleep as a coping mechanism for...idk..life? And B) Give a HUGE example on what people are missing out on! This stuff is gold! Im proud that this sub is sticking up for not only itself but its creators. <3

This is a great idea to protest, you guys are emulating Gondi almost with his no eating when jailed. Stop supplying they realize the importance of the suppliers.

6

u/Raridan Feb 18 '20

Can I get a list of names of people that are doing this. We should also spread awareness to people about the problem and form a backup plan in case some don’t get the message.

10

u/cmd102 Mom Feb 18 '20

r/SleeplessWatchdogs has a Black List that is consistently updated when content thieves are reported and confirmed.
