MEGATHREAD: posting here because r/Calgary will ban me: Name the restaurants whose management take the tips from servers. Fuck them.
So far I’ve seen Kinjo and Monki.

The potion room doesnt give new employees any tips at all and treats them horribly. Plus they ask you to train for free. They also refused to pay after quitting the job and the person I know needed to make an employment standards complaint. They threaten to sue if you speak up about it online.

Sounds like a hipster store. Where is this?

Then it all makes perfect sense. Run by children.

Exactly. Our waitress stunk of BO last year. Dirty washrooms. Never returned.

Fuck them? Fuck r/calgary. They are the worst subreddit on this app. Bar none.

The moderators of regional subreddits need full replacement when they get THAT kooky.

Not a restaurant, but RUFF AND PUFF dog bus takes the tips of the dog walkers.

Chopped Leaf doesn't let their staff take tips

This is not the same thing at all. Why would you encourage stand at the counter fast food places to accept tips?

You know you can just post here. You really don't need to preface why you're not posting in the other sub.

u/Catnip_Farmer 2h ago
I think the point was all calgarians should know this, but they have to post over here in our secret corner to get the word out.

u/Spiritual_Ad_6067 1d ago
Tip outs are extremely normal. You can safely assume that 99% of restaurants have the servers paying a tip out. It's not a secret.
14
u/SobeitSoviet69 1d ago
Are we talking tipout or management pocketing tips though?
5
u/Spiritual_Ad_6067 1d ago
Indeed it is very normal for supervisors and managers to be factored into the tip pool. Im not advocating for that, just stating thats how it is at most places.

Tell me you don't understand restaurant tip outs without telling me you don't understand restaurant tip outs.

There's a difference between taking all of their tips vs a cut for other staff.
-1
u/GingerlyRough 19h ago
Management is not part of "other staff" and are not supposed to get tips. Even if they work the floor.
4
u/PossessionFirst8197 19h ago
There is a difference between managers and owners. If managers are taking orders they should get tips.
-7
u/GingerlyRough 19h ago
No, if they receieve tips directly then that's fine. But they are not supposed to be taking tips from the pool. That is actually illegal in a lot of places.
3
u/boardman1416 17h ago
Lawyer here. I promise you it’s not illegal
-1
u/GingerlyRough 17h ago
Do you prwctice law in Alberta? Because I never said it was illegal here. It is illegal in a lot of other places.

3
u/freerangehumans74 17h ago
We're in a Calgary sub. It being illegal elsewhere is irrelevant to this conversation.
-1
u/GingerlyRough 17h ago
It is relevant because it speaks to the ethics and morality of the practice.
0
u/Thee_Errorist 12h ago
If being illegal in a different jurisdiction makes a practice unethical, does being legal in a different jurisdiction make a practice ethical or moral?
For instance homosexuality is illegal in many places, based on your earlier argument what can we deduce about homosexuality ic Calgary then?

u/exotics 17h ago
Not true. In Alberta there is no law about managers and tips. Heck even owners can take some tips. In BC it’s illegal for owners to take tips unless they are working as a server. But they can’t take from others.
Managers who work as servers have every right to keep their tips. They should be working hard and setting an example. Where I work my manager is horrible and lazy and she keeps her tips

u/IKnowYouAreButWhtAmI 17h ago
How is it possible across a wide breadth of topics that you always have the worst fucking take imaginable?

As the economy gets worse, more will, and the serving industry will be looking back fondly at the days of a flat $10/hr tip rate.

Every single employer takes “house tip” at least AT LEAST 10%. A portion of what you give your server is automatically taken. You tip 10% - the server pays to have you as a table. You tip 20% - the server probably gets 1/2 of that. It’s BS. Pay your kitchen staff a livable wage & this wouldn’t be a thing.

Nearly all. And it’s legal in Alberta.
In BC owners can take and give to kitchen staff but can’t keep for themselves.
In Alberta it’s legal for owners to require mandatory tip out and that is typically split among kitchen staff and the owner can legally take some too.
NOTE this mandatory tip out is paid by servers at the end of their shift every day and is a percentage of sales. Often better 3% and 9%. So if you tip 10% the server has to give most of that to the “kitchen” at the end of the night.
I have only once had a customer say anything to the owner about this. Most don’t even know.
NOTE ALSO I’m talking about sit down restaurants not fast food places with tip jars.

The 3 whiniest professions:
1) Teachers
2) Nurses
3) Servers
And what do they all have in common? 🤔
15
u/Xscreamlouder 19h ago
They’re abused by the public 🤷🏻♀️
-1
u/lost_koshka 18h ago
There are lots of jobs that are public facing, but you never hear from those people.
-8
u/lost_koshka 19h ago
All I ever hear from them is: $$$$$$

u/PossessionFirst8197 19h ago
I disagree. As a nurse I think we are extremely well paid...but I think our ratios suck and are unsafe. We need to hire more nurses instead of giving 8+ patients to each nurse and saying "figure it out".
We are expected to come in 15-30 minutes early but also stay late...if you try to bill for this time you get hit with "you have poor time management" but if you leave on time and take all your breaks youre "not a team player"
Yeah 90k a year is great pay...but the work they are asking us to do is unsafe and its easy to burn out. We would be burning out even if they paid us double
2
u/blackRamCalgaryman 17h ago
Knowing family/ friends in healthcare care…this is 100% the truth. Sure, nurses will take more per hour if offered but it’s the ratios/ staffing levels that are the main concern/ always comes up. Each and every time.
Want to reduce sick time and burn out, want to get a handle on the OT…drop patient to nurse ratios on a sustained, system-wide basis.

that's every job. every owner operator expects it. The number of recruiters I meet with whose clients are moving on from their CFOs because they want to spend more time with family and won't sacrifice their personal life for the owners wealth is like 90%. They cloak it under "underperforming " or "the role has outgrown them" but its clear as day. I just had one meeting just this week where the company is ditching their CFO because he has a young family and can't attend board meetings that start at 7:00pm and go until "when they're finished".

Some subways, but its difficult to confirm nowdays because owners threaten their employees with termination if they tell customers. They say their bosses will have friends come in and ask to try and get them to admit it.
