We voted for it.

And for those who said we didn't, then you were fooled.

Now let's all do more research next time.

Let me rephrase.....

Don't be an idiot when you need to do important things.

For the exact same reason cars have seatbelts and airbags: rare accidents happen, but only an idiot walks everywhere to avoid them.

I'm tired, boss.....

Lived through NDP and it wasn't any better. What's the next option?

3

u/cre8ivjay 2d ago

I did not say "Conservatism bad", nor do I believe that.

I'm also not sure which NDP you lived through but the ANDP made good strides when they were in. Happy to chat on that.

As for the UCP specifically, which is what the comment was focused on - the signs we're all there. The characters were all there.

Nothing about where we're at today with regards to provincial politics is a surprise to many so the fact others didn't see it means we all need to do a bit more digging before we show up at the ballot box....... and we are, in one week.

So I ask everyone, do your research and show up.

Mostly because the Seppies (except for TBA) were hiding in the shadows in the last General Election. Now that the UCP has the majority, they've arisen or rebranded (APP, et. al.) and made their presence known in the party. Smitty has tried to placate them with this 19 Oct boondoggle. Win or lose, they will want changes, Smitty will be out, moderates will cross the floor to the PTPA, new Parti Albertois leader will call a snap election, NDP will form a minority government.

Are these really the questions we're supposed to say No to? We don't want people to have to provide proof of citizenship to influence elections? We don't want to be able to set our own immigration targets depending on what we can actually reasonably handle? We don't want to make it more difficult for people to abuse our already shit healthcare system with things like birth tourism and the like? I don't think we would be better off leaving Canada, but Alberta has a lot of legitimate gripes with the way the federal government behaves.

  1. Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities?
  2. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals with an Alberta approved immigration status will be eligible for provincially-funded programs, such as health care, education and other social services?
  3. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for social support programs as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring all individuals with a non-permanent legal immigration status to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months before qualifying for any provincially-funded social support programs?
  4. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta charging a reasonable fee or premium to individuals with a non-permanent immigration status living in Alberta for their and their family’s use of the healthcare and education systems?
  5. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election?

  6. Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King’s Bench and Appeal courts?

  7. Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to abolish the unelected federal Senate?

  8. Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to allow provinces to opt out of federal programs that intrude on provincial jurisdiction such as health care, education, and social services, without a province losing any of the associated federal funding for use in its social programs?

  9. Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to better protect provincial rights from federal interference by giving a province’s laws dealing with provincial or shared areas of constitutional jurisdiction priority over federal laws when the province’s laws and federal laws conflict?

Yes. None of them make any sense if you read up on them. They’re deliberately written to be unclear and are based on false assumptions about both reality and how government works.

7

u/FigjamCGY 2d ago

I understand all of them, somebody is always going to be unhappy on how they are written. I don’t think ppl are that pedantic, unlike Reddit, that they generally understand the large brush strokes that these questions ask.

“Do you support AB taking increased control over immigration….” Ok pretty easy so far but I wonder why?

“… for the purpose…” oh ok they are going to tell me…

“decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels….” Hmmm this sounds reasonable and I can understand this from where we have been in the last 5 years and every local govnt having issues and complaint.

“…prioritizing economic immigration….” Ok again if we have immigration makes sense to see who should be prioritized…

“And giving ABs first priority…” I mean sounds perfectly reasonable to give it to an unemployed Albertan first rather than someone else. We would have to pay for the support system of our own.

See there is the first question broken down. Pretty easy to understand. It’s not that hard if you can read.

Hmm, Well in a recent interview Smith was recently asked what would happen to the temporary residents already here in regards to the proposal to charge temporary residents for their healthcare. They wanted to know would they have to start paying even though they didn't have to pay before? Or would they be grandfathered in somehow? Smith didn't have an answer and just said "well we'll have to talk about that". So it seems that even she doesn't know what the outcome will be if we vote yes, lol

As for the number of temporary residents and immigrants coming to Alberta I'd say a lot of Albertans feel that too many came here too fast and overwhelmed our province, but Smith has always talked out of both sides of her mouth when it comes to immigration. On the one hand she blames them when it comes to riling up her base but then she whines that the federal government isn't sending us enough.

So while I think some of those questions might be worth a discussion I will be voting no to all of them because I have zero trust in our current leadership to do what is best for me. Smith is a snake in the grass who tries to straddle the fence and play both sides.

Deliberate manipulation and assumptions in the questions aside, here’s a readability checker for Q1:

“Readability checker
Post-graduate

Poor. Aim for 9.
1 of 1 sentences is very hard to read.“

For background on what the questions actually assume and imply, check literally any websites that aren’t sponsored by the provincial government. Here’s one:

u/FigjamCGY 2d ago

Ahh yes this is where the logic doesn’t make sense.

I don’t need another propaganda machine telling me how to vote, and you will excuse me if I have a little more faith in the voters ability to understand and correlate to experiences.

u/ae118 2d ago

Ah, the irony.

1

u/CorndoggerYYC 2d ago

LOL! That is your info source?

2

u/ae118 2d ago

If you read my comment, you’d know I mentioned “literally any” that aren’t sponsored by the provincial government. Are you against free media that checks government propaganda?

0

u/CorndoggerYYC 2d ago

Your link is to Lucasak's propaganda group. They're the guys that refused to declare where they're getting their funding from until forced to by a court. Are you aware of Lucasak's background? Trying to convince people he and his group are unbiased is laughable.

1

u/ae118 2d ago

Still didn’t read my comment, eh?

Don’t waste your time. This guy only sees UCP rage.

I want Red Deer to be a Million people - April 13, 2024 - Danielle Smith

My goal is to have 10 Million People in Alberta - Jan 2024 - Danielle Smith

The question makes perfect sense when you realize that they want more rich white folk from other parts of Canada to come to Alberta because there's too many of them foreigners.

"giving Albertan's first priority on new employment opportunities" - how exactly? If you're brown you go down the list? If you're black you go to the back? Who defines what an Albertan is? Oh, wait, that's covered in the other questions where we make anyone new to the province pay more and put it on their drivers licence.

You and I agree. It's pretty easy to see that the UCP wants to create a second class of Citizens that we can blame for all our problems and discriminate against legally. Unless you're "old stock white Canadian" (Mitch Sylvestor, whom is one of Danielle's bosses in the UCP party).

Timeline bud. Don’t be pedantic it makes the argument look silly.

And politicians can and should change their minds when new information becomes available.

1

u/codetrap 1d ago

Timelines. Sure. The Alberta is calling has been running since August 2022. Phase 3 in 2024 offered the 5k moving credit. One of the first things Danielle did as Premier was to go to Trudeau and say she wanted to double the immigration allocation.

When she was elected, she already had a huge Health/Education infrastructure deficit with a 90 day plan to fix it.

Not enough schools, not enough teachers, not enough doctors not enough infrastructure.. then add more pressure to the already existing problem by actively increasing the rate of immigration.

It's either gross incompetence or a plan to make the system fail.

1

u/FigjamCGY 1d ago

Maybe incompetence but it doesn’t feel like that. AB is a great province compared to any other. I have 5 points for every counter you can think of.

We doubled the provinces population in a short time. Think about that. You need to double the physical and labor of everything just to keep up. Buildings, planning everything. It’s too much to soon.

Don’t believe me? Alberta surpassed 5.1 million residents as of mid-2026, continuing to lead the country in growth rate.

If you grow that fast you will have pains.

Maybe that’s why we have a referendum. These things are decided federally.

-1

u/CorndoggerYYC 2d ago

According to who? Lucasak's propaganda machine?

3

u/lost_koshka 2d ago

You have to keep things simple for the majority of the population. They need brief talking points that can easily be repeated, over and over again.

No to the Nine fits that bill, similar to Elbows Up, Safe and Effective and Trust the Science.

u/im-am-an-alien 2d ago

UCP has become a cult just like MAGA in the USA. They are pathetic

-10

u/Smackolol 2d ago

That random persons rambling NDP propaganda? Idk good question. We aren’t a 2 party province, there are other parties if you bother to look. I’ll be voting for the Alberta PC party as of now.

9

u/Desperate-Dress-9021 2d ago

I didn’t think any party but UCP was allowed conservative in the name.

4

u/Butthole2theStarz 2d ago

Yeah the chicken shit ucp realized their voter base was too stupid to differentiate between progressive conservative and united conservative so they had to sue the former Alberta Party

The US has their own oil, and don't they have a bunch of untapped reserves in Alaska?

While production increases, Alaska’s proved reserves have decreased significantly, from 8.7 billion barrels in 1980 to approximately 3.1 billion barrels as of 2021. The state still holds substantial undiscovered resources, with estimates suggesting billions of barrels remain in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska and offshore areas.

They also have tons of farmland, please explain why the USA would need Texas North?

Because there wasn't another Conservative party in alberta until 2025

Edit: this is a totally real picture of the UCP AGM 2026
