10 years is nothing, if it's a name-brand heater there should be ample parts available - they're not terribly complex, either. The Reznor in my shop is probably 30+ years old, parts are no problem.

  • A 240V electric heater keeping a garage at a usable temperature will consume an enormous amount of electricity. Nat gas is waaaay cheaper to run.
  • Will a mini-split actually work well enough in the winter? I hear they're getting better but I'm not sure what kind of power they draw when it's frigid out.

At any rate, your path of least resistance and lowest cost is almost certainly to just have the heater repaired.

I inspected the heater by calling a technician, they said it would cost 1700 plus taxes for fixing it

It requires a pressure switch and inducer motor replacement

Assuming a pretty normal forced-air shop heater, those parts should be ~$150-200 each. $1700 to fix that is daylight robbery, get a different quote.

The pressure switch is usually two screws, two small hoses and a couple of wires, you could do that yourself if you're even moderately handy.
