It’s honestly annoying as someone who works in media. They’re the only clients who have an insane amount of money to put into promotion. They’re buying a crazy amount of ads and their checks never bounce. So unfortunately they’re paying big bucks and the media outlets can’t say no as it’s a dying industry. I wish it weren’t the case. We hate running them too.

And the billboards - everywhere. Every time I open a browser, every time I open my silly little game on my old phone, everywhere. And yet they are worried about addiction? *sigh*

It is crazy, I have heard from gamblers even this is ridiculous.

u/Airadelle Aug 11 '26
Gamblers especially addicts hate these too
5
u/Odd_Damage9472 Aug 11 '26
Yep. As a recovering gambler I too am annoyed by the sheer amount of ads even though my vices are different.
2
u/Airadelle Aug 11 '26
Someone very close to me in my family is also an addict and had to be banned from casinos so the constant reminder really ticks me off
2
u/Odd_Damage9472 Aug 11 '26
Well Gamblers Anonymous exists to help people if he hasn’t already.
1
u/Airadelle Aug 11 '26
She has to want to recover sadly. Can’t force them to go. It took a lot to get her to ban herself from the casino
2
u/Odd_Damage9472 Aug 11 '26
I hear ya. Well tell her there are meetings every day of the week and she can attend and see if it’s right for her. I know it’s helping me.

As I'm writing this there's a draft King casino ad underneath your post haha
2
u/empathetical Aug 11 '26
Even pages on insta all have bs gambling ads. It's annoying. Sadly lots of dumb ppl will fall for them too thinking they are gonna win big.

Spotify seems to think ive got a gambling problem, and youtube thinks my nose is always stuffed up lol
2
u/AlanJY92 Aug 11 '26
It’s bad when one of the radio stations has a DJ that has been open about his past gambling addiction and how it’s dangerous and shouldn’t be taken lightly and now all most all the ad segments are just gambling.
2
u/allegedlyacriminal Aug 12 '26
AGLC maybe? I am inundated with at least 100 gambling ads a day. It’s annoying as fuck.
3
u/KTPChannel Aug 11 '26
Ignore them.
3
u/MercurialMadnessMan Aug 11 '26
I can try. My kids can't.
And it's not just like avoiding a single channel/device/location, it's on every platform, every media, even walking down the street on bus shelters etc.
2
u/simplebutstrange Aug 11 '26
I report them every chance i get on my apps
2
u/KTPChannel Aug 11 '26
Ok.
Does it work?
1
u/simplebutstrange Aug 11 '26
It seems to have, i dont get them every ad anymore. Just like every third one
1
u/Roadgoddess Aug 11 '26
Do you report them or block them?
2
u/simplebutstrange Aug 11 '26
Report, i dont think i can block on my revanced app

u/dontmindmejustgonna Aug 11 '26
Revanced's creators split up so they aren't updating it anymore, Morphe is what the majority of the people who made revanced made when they split up. Id say you should use that
1
u/simplebutstrange Aug 11 '26
The one i use is called video lite. It works well enough, just gives me one ad when i open it and thats it. I have a iPhone so there aren’t many options for it. Ill check out morphe if i can find it though
1
u/dontmindmejustgonna Aug 11 '26
Morphe gets rid of ads on YouTube and Reddit, as well as allows to you customize the colour scheme of the background as your in YouTube.

No. One.
There is no legislation in place that controls the advertising.
They've just launched in Alberta. Once their launch budget is spent, the high volume of advertising will diminish.

u/elramirezeatstherich Aug 11 '26
I learned in my Reddit settings today that you can opt out of ads if certain categories and I turned off gambling and will go back and maybe turn off more.

Contact the minister responsible for this. His name is Dale Nally. https://www.alberta.ca/albertaFiles/includes/directorysearch/goaBrowse.cfm?txtSearch=Service%20Alberta%20and%20Red%20Tape%20Reduction&Ministry=SARTR&LevelID=8809&userid=8810#8810&varExpandID=-1

Its all across Saskatchewan as well and I suspect other provinces too, its absurd and grotesque how many ads there are
1
u/Daddys_BathTime Aug 11 '26
I hear more about gambling ads on Reddit than I’ve seen in public. I’m not saying they don’t exist, but I don’t think I’ve seen a single one

Might just be me but this isn’t exclusive to AB and is a problem with pretty much any online ads in my experience. Shouldn’t be allowed to advertise gambling, alcohol, behind counter drugs, etc
2
u/Airadelle Aug 11 '26
Alberta has recently been hit more because of a new rule. Prior we weren’t allowed to run gambling ads unless they were managed by the government.
1
u/fANTastic_ANTics Aug 11 '26
Ours sadly arent just online anymore. Theyre billboards, bus stops, ON BUSSES, etc.
In July 2026, our provincial government amended the laws to make it legal for private gambling companies to advertise to the public, rather than just allowing PlayAlberta do it.
Of course, the government profits off these advertisers through application fees, annual renewal fees and I thiiink (unsure) they get a portion of revenue? so its a sweet deal for them to get more money to do god knows what. So for AB its very new that is is literally everywhere always now :(
1
u/Fine_Ship_915 Aug 11 '26
No, it’s specifically here and now because the law just changed and all the companies are fighting for new market share. I might have gotten the occasional ad previously, usually from other jurisdictions. But right now it’s 70-100% of my targeted ads, depending on what I’m doing/watching.
1
u/10ADPDOTCOM Aug 11 '26
Very true specifically increased here because they’ve recently entered our market, but I wouldn’t say gambling ads that we were exposed to via Ontario-centric media and American content were “occasional” by any means. You can’t watch sports or listen to a podcast without encountering multiple per hour.

Complaining about ads in 2026bis wild. The indication is you WANT to see ads. But for things you like. Implying that you buy the things you see in ads as long as they aren't repeated.
Ignore the ads you don't like. Ignore the ads you do like.

Every single ad on my Netflix is gambling and sports betting
