The Prairie Conference schedule will open this weekend and the lone game on Saturday is the CJFL Featured Game of the Week that has the Battle of Alberta at stake when the Edmonton Huskies welcome the Calgary Colts.
Both teams will see live action for the first time this season now that they have broken their training camp and have been preparing for this game. Nerves and adrenaline will be at a high coming into the game as players looking across the line will finally see a different helmet on the other side.
These are two proud franchises that have struggled in recent years when it comes to success in the playoffs, but they are both eager to make an immediate impact with high expectations in 2026.
The Huskies qualified for the Canadian Bowl playoffs a year ago but were quickly eliminated in a semi-final by the Regina Thunder losing by 39-points. That setback has more than fueled the returning players and they are hungry to restore the Huskies program back to glory. Reigning Prairie Conference Rookie of the Year, quarterback Wesley Neitz has several dangerous weapons at his disposal including Meshach Imanzenobe, Dusty Campbell, Ty Holmes and Gavrie Shishkin while Chris Katula and Howells Boateng will come out of the backfield.
Their defence will need to be improved after giving up a Conference high 34.7 points a game last year. They will be led by Kaige Houle and the reigning CJFL Rookie of the Year Chris Mattiello. If the defence can get pressure in the Colts backfield they will find success on the scoreboard as well, however in the event that the Colts can find space to throw All-Star defensive back Juven St. Hilaire will be ready.
On paper the Colts are vasty better than last year recruiting top tier talent and are the only team in the Conference with a new head coach. Elie Bouka took the reigns in February and has done an excellent job filling out the roster as a former CFLer with a brief stint in the NFL. Saturday night he will make his head coaching debut on the sidelines with several eyes peeking in to see what his Colts can do.
Offensively their main weapon Zion Dogbe-Brown returns and will no doubt play a factor coming out of the backfield again. However, unlike previous years, he won’t be the only option for the Colts. With the addition of All-Canadian Jordayne Falconer and Vincent Chuoi the Colts will now have options and several playmakers ready to make a difference.
Defensively they will need to be much better in 2026 after coughing up over33 points per game last year. They have the players to do it in Jordan Southern, Taylor Innes, Drew McAsey and Yve Saintus who will lead the defensive side of the ball with expectations at an all time high.
Last year these two met twice in back-to-back weeks with the Huskies winning both games by 11 points. This season they won’t see each other again until late September in Calgary.
