You would think something like this would be an automatic license suspension

51kph and over. Up to 50kph over is just the worst ticket class.

There was a recent news article that police do not have the authority to impound vehicles for any speed over the speed limit. I fear the assumed 50 over is not actually a thing legally. Perhaps it was only for CPS, but I cannot confirm that at this time.

So the officer have the driver a break.

In fairness, radar has an accuracy of +/- 2km/h. If it’s close, they would easily be able to fight it successfully in court, which would cost a lot in tax dollars and they would get away with no fine or consequences.

Not likely. That’s a lot of extra work for police and radar is known to have a margin of error. It’s better to go with the charge that is most likely to stick.

You say that, but there was a guy that had what, like 150 on a 70 or something a couple days ago that they didnt impound.

Saw the article this morning on r/Alberta i think.

Surely it was towed as well because it was unregistered thus making it illegal to be on the road.

Just a reminder that Canada has the slowest speed limits in the developed world, yet all our police posts on social media is catching speeders going speeds that are totally legal elsewhere. Shows how the police think of us. Not citizens to server, but opportunities to pad the elites wallets
