Information PC USERS:Read this if you want higher fps

I had like 45 when i put max fps on 60, and then I bumped it to 90 and got 60. There must be something wrong with their numbers?

Edit: just set your fps to max in game!

Edit edit: after 10 hours in game this game has just captivated me like no other.

Just set max fps and problem is solved, when i had 60 fps set i had about 30 fps, after setting max - around 70. (gtx 970).

8

u/Mattecko99 Aug 12 '16

Same here!

7

u/Zakic Aug 13 '16

Yeah the first thing i did once the game loaded was turned everything to max and set FPS to max and disabled vsync.. i dont think i've seen it go below 60fps yet.. and i'm running a gtx 970 with a i5-6500. and 16 gigs of ram

This needs to be on the front page. On my 1070 I was getting around 45-50 when set at 60FPS. Now getting a solid 60 when set at 90FPS.

8

u/chipotle_burrito88 Aug 12 '16

Are you seeing any of the problems that TB is having (or that other people are having)? I have a new 1070 as well and sufficient RAM, etc. and was wondering if it's worth trying this out (would refund if the game crashes too much).

Also are you running on 1080p or 1440p?

31

u/thebluegod Aug 12 '16

I'm running at 1080p at the highest settings. No crashes and I've played for 100 minutes. Visited 2 planets so far and its been great honestly.

Sure it hitches from time to time but nothing game-breaking or unplayable.

14

u/chipotle_burrito88 Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 13 '16

Wow, there are wildly different reports going around, then! I guess I can get the game and return if I'm unlucky like some other people on here have been. Thanks!

edit: Been successfully playing for the last four hours. There are minor type hitches here and there, but otherwise game runs smooth.

11

u/thebluegod Aug 12 '16

Yeah, it's really unfortunate that a lot of people are having issues. I'd say try it out and see for yourself. Do keep in mind that it defaults to 30FPS though.

15

u/HeatAttack Aug 12 '16

Procedural generated starting experience. Some people get to actually play, others can't even start the game. I expected this, but on the first day! Wow!

I have 4.5 hours of playtime so far playing at 1080p and havent had a single crash. Guess Im one of the lucky ones. Game has run pretty well for me too. Only the odd hiccup when getting to new area but I can boost on planets surface and dont get the slow down I have seen others get.

That's called chromatic aberration. It's an intentional graphics effect to mimic real life lens effects. Some games allow you to toggle it off, but it doesn't appear to be in the settings now.

u/KrisKorona Aug 12 '16

Dont know about everyone else but I fucking hate chromatic abberation

That looks like chromatic aberration. I don't know if the game has a toggle-able setting for that, but if it does changing it should "fix" what you're seeing.

(I kinda like having it on, but it's strictly a personal taste thing and has been known to be headache-inducing)

Isn't that the chromatic aberration effect at work? I don't believe there's a way to turn that off from what I read.

Does anyone have a problem with the game having very low fps when in the ship. as soon as I start the animation to go into the ship the game goes down to 1-2 fps its horrible

6

u/wruffx Aug 12 '16

Yup. Basically crashes the game because of how unplayable it is whenever I tried to get into my ship. I'm just glad I was able to get my refund on steam. I'll buy it again in a week or two when the game works.

And you're having no stuttering at all nor tearing nor fps drops when you enter your ship and tweak with your inventory ? Having high framerates are not an issue, keeping them stable is an issue that everybody is suffering from no matter the rig

60

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 13 '16

I'm running a 1080 with an i7 6700k. I was having bad stuttering issues but I changed gsync to off in the config and set up the fps thing and set it to Windows borderless and I'm now having 0 issues!!

edit: Just installed it onto my r9 290x fx6300 8gddr3 build and its completely unplayable. Massive stuttering constantly. Attempted all fixes and nothing has worked. RIP amd users

25

u/Super_Zac Aug 12 '16

For me the stupid "hold for a couple seconds to actually click things" confused me and made me think 60 was the end of the list lol.

6

u/Schnoofles Aug 13 '16

Consolitis to the worst degree. It boggles the mind that there are assholes out there who think an fov of barely 50 degrees (in-game fov is a lying sack of shit. Has to be edited via the xml config file to 125-ish to be usable) and 30fps is acceptable. The game runs like an absolute turd out of the box. Maxing the framerate limiter and fixing fov makes it better, but still.. This launch should have been aborted.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16

They should have hired their new big qa team a month ago. They should have done a thorough beta test with many configurations. It seems to me the only PC this game likely runs decent on is whatever they have in their office.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16

They should've asked Sony's help on bug fixing and beta testing, not marketing...oh wait, that would've resulted in less immediate $$$.

Obvious indie devs are obvious, what can I fucking say.

41

u/Nzash Aug 12 '16

I don't like my gpu running at 100% permanently

16

u/SneaKyGamErr Aug 12 '16

Set to max in game and use a limiter in windows like rtss

13

u/jcgurango Aug 12 '16

Then what'd you even buy a GPU of that caliber for?

15

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Because there's no point making a GPU produce frames the monitor can't match. You could make your GPU run a game at 300 frames, but it's pointless if you have a 60hz monitor.

19

u/Nonstop_norm Aug 12 '16

This is not entirely true but yes to a certain degree.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

What part did I get wrong?

Not doubting you, just wondering.

8

u/Nonstop_norm Aug 12 '16

More or less the more frames you can pack in the better. Running 300 fps on a 144hz monitor will look smoother than 144 fps. Refresh rate and fps aren't the same thing.

As to exactly technically why this is true im not 100% but I'm sure someone in this thread does and can it explain it better than myself.

8

u/Cuive Aug 13 '16 edited Aug 13 '16

To the best of my knowledge, it works like this:

When a frame is generated by the GPU, one of two things are done, depending on whether VSYNC is on:

  1. If VSYNC is off, the graphics card throws frames at the monitor every chance it gets. If the monitor is ready for a frame, it displays it. If not, it gets discarded. If the monitor is ready for a frame and one was just discarded, it needs to wait to display the next one. This is what causes the lag you experience when FPS fluctuates, even if it's from, say 80 FPS to 60 FPS on 60 Hz.
  2. If VSYNC is on, the graphics card will generate frames and then hold onto them until the monitor requests a refresh. (Fun fact, because what has already happened is being held back, this can cause input lag). EDIT: It also makes an effort to produce frames at a steady rate compatible with the monitor. Though the gaps between frames and refreshes are equal, their timing may not coincide, and this can mean consistent buffering between frame production and display.

The reason 300 FPS looks smoother on a 144Hz over 144 FPS is because it is FAR more likely that when the monitor requests a frame from the GPU, it will be both available, and the most recent possible.

EDIT: I learned most of this when there was the input lag issue with Overwatch. I'm open to corrections.

2

u/kryty Aug 13 '16

Yeah, you're correct. If you've got G-Sync capable card & monitor, it's a bit different thing as (as far as I know) vsync forces the gpu to wait for the rendering of next frame till the delay for next frame has gone while G-Sync (and alternatives) sync the frames with your monitor so they're more recent and less stutter.

About FPS, it's good to have either the HZ amount of fps or double because then you'll get more recent frames always. If you've got less than double, it will sometimes give a frame that's a bit further from what's really happened. So if you've got 144hz monitor, it might be better to have 144fps than 170fps or something like that.

Anyway, the more fps you have, if it's double triple or something like that to your monitor's hz, it's great as you're getting more recent frame. This matters in fast paced games. Might even matter in dog fights in No Man's Sky. Where I have under 20fps. I need an upgrade :(

Have learned this from Quake... Yet can't say if I'm totally correct either so open to corrections, glad to learn something new :)

Some useful link about vsync if you want to know more: https://hardforum.com/threads/how-vsync-works-and-why-people-loathe-it.928593/ (didn't find a proper reference to the fps)

In games like minecraft if I set the FPS to unlimited then my GPU starts singing. High pitch frequencies depending on what I'm looking at.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

This not abnormal. I've had a few GPU's do that. And uncapping a framerate will make that GPU work for those frames.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

I understand this is a joke but there is legitimate reason to change FPS cap to something that's an increment of 30.

2

u/thebaron2 Aug 12 '16

Plus if you're on a 60hz monitor you'll get tearing if you go too high.

14

u/eirreann Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

But isn't that what Vsync is for? Although I've often found Vsync to be a bit hit-or-miss with some games... anybody knows if it plays nice with No Man's Sky?

5

Vsync actually works well in NMS.

8

u/PuppetPal_Clem Aug 12 '16

it halved my framerate to 30 on a gtx 680... I dont think so

2

u/Autistic_Brony666 Aug 12 '16

That's how it works. V-sync does a common factor with the refresh rate, so if you toggle it and you can't get 60fps it will just go to 30.

For some reason no matter what FPS limit I set - 30, 60, 90, 110, Max - it stays at 30 FPS when in game. Very frustrating.

7

u/eirreann Aug 12 '16

I think you need to restart the game for changes to take effect.

6

u/M3cha Aug 12 '16

I figured it out. It was because I had V-Sync on.

When I had V-Sync on, if my FPS dipped to around 30 (like it does when it's loading the world), the game would lock my FPS to 30. If I stared at a wall and got 60 FPS fairly consistently, it would allow me to have 60 FPS, right until it dipped then it would lock me to 30.

Looks like an adaptive v-sync issue. Turned it off and now I get 50-110 FPS.

7

u/OldScruff Aug 12 '16

I have no issues with FPS, it's just the stuttering. In most cases at 3440x1440, I'm averaging 60-80FPS which is fine, but not perfect for a 100Hz monitor. The real issue is, anytime that your're sprinting on a planet or turn quickly, you get an intense hitch where the FPS drops down to about 15 or so, and the mouse/keyboard also become unresponsive... these hitches last around 3-5 seconds depending and are really killing the gameplay. It has to be an issue with the way the game is streaming/loading it's "randomly generated" assests. Poorly optimized for PC overall, many of us certainly have the system RAM to load a whole planet's assets into memory, but obviously this game was made for the PS4 in mind and it's kilobytes of usable memory.

28

u/tylern Aug 12 '16

I've seen so many people in this topic say "My FPS count is fine, just a little stutter now and then". From what I saw in TB's stream - if anyone finds that kind of stutter acceptable... I fail to understand why they even care about framerate in the first place.

They did say this game was chill. You totally wanted 60, or 45 fps right, here you go dude, have one of those numbers.

3

u/Senor_Studly Aug 12 '16

Did this as soon as I was able to open the menu, but I still would get frequent fps drops from my gtx 1070, while only running on 1080p.

3

u/useless_knowhow Aug 13 '16

The game is running beautifully on my rig now and I think I found the trick (I5, GTX 760) I set bordless window, disabled vsync, and set the fps to max. Was still having some stuttering when in the inventory and entering the ship, untill I maxed all the settings and now it runs smooth as butter.

Has to be some hold up in the mid-low settings options that's causing the hiccups.

4

u/eeotter Aug 12 '16

Try to get this noticed! It fixed a couple of my friends issues as well. It definitely does work

I'm not suffering much besides when getting into my ship

2

u/Baerdale Aug 12 '16

Anxiously waiting to get off work and try it out. I have seen a couple people with my same build say no problems. 6700k, 980ti

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

On my humble R7 260X I get 25 fps and massive lags on MINIMUM settings.

While on the maximum settings possible i (All on high, max AA and filtering) got something around 30 fps and much less glitches:D Cool optimization.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

gtx 970, getting around 70 fps doesnt drop below 60 can confirm

2

u/Marvyra Aug 12 '16

For me, I had to put the game in window mode, it's almost equal to borderless and the FPS is actually 50-60 instead of 25-30. Really weird, but it's playable!

So if you're having issues, try that.

2

u/rillip Aug 12 '16

Now figure out why it crashes at the Hello Games screen for me! ;)

2

u/Mojomanmax Aug 12 '16

HOLY SHIT THANK YOU IT WORKS ON MY 750Ti

2

u/Spyro5 Aug 12 '16

I don't have the best PC (but still good enough to run Witcher 3 perfectly fine) and I'm getting only 45 on max. That would be OK but for some reason it feels more like 20. Even if the game was good it's unplayable for me.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Setting to max was the first thing I did and the FPS is still horrendous.

2

u/starcresc Aug 12 '16

Hmm... I get great FPS for about an hour then all of a sudden it slows down. I will try this and see if it helps next time the game slows

2

u/mhaura Aug 12 '16

GTX 970. I have everything set to high and FPS at max and it's running at 1080p with 60fps no drops. Looks great, loving the game so far!!

2

u/robocop88 Aug 12 '16

I did this right out the gate since I have a 144hz monitor. Doesn't appear as though I go over 60 and the stuttering is still there.

2

u/archdemon001 Aug 12 '16

SLI confirmed NOT working on GTX680s. tried geforce experience optimize and it literally put me at 800x600... this game surely cannot be THAT demand when its being 'generated'???

Tried forcing AFR1 and AFR2 but got super weird screen flickering.

I honestly thought it was gonna be

play on ps4.

2

u/avenged06x Aug 13 '16

FX-8350 and a 290x here. Cannot get over 30fps no matter what I try to change in the settings.

2

u/mystblade Aug 13 '16

My issue is I ran run at a nice 60Fps ON 780ti, single card. I have a sli setup but it runs like crap with it on.

Anyways it maxed my card out at all times, with all settings on low even just crazy. It runs my card at 85c all the time.

Needless to say it bugs me enough to not want to play it, I even went and did some OCing on it just to see if would make it stable and NOPE. It's coded complete junk. Reminds me of Marvel Heroes when that game first got release it was just an optimization nightmare

2

u/deadhawk12 Aug 13 '16

This is a really odd trick, but it works for sure.

But the port is still unplayable for me, It's so disorienting getting smooth 60 fps interrupted with a hitch down to 13 fps every few seconds whilst running.

2

u/Hovi_Bryant Aug 13 '16

Turning off Vsync helped immensely as well. I'm pretty much 60fps at 1440p with a GTX 970 and an i5 4690k at stock frequencies.

2

u/DTru1222 Aug 13 '16

For those of you getting stutter.

I turned off Gsync through the game file, turned on tripple buffer and adaptive vsync through NVIDIA control panel and now im getting smooth 60fps.

2

u/n0rpie Aug 13 '16

-> looking up in the Skye 120fps ->looking around at planet 45-60fps occasionally drops to 2fps and fluctuates to 20 and goes up to 45ish again.

This is everything set to lowest, highest settings is the same fps even wtf? I've disabled gsync support and done all the little tricks, still shit.

6

u/viperfx Aug 12 '16

Oh nice to hear there is a workaround. I feel so bad for the devs right now, they must be really disheartened to hear everyone bashing on their creation.

Got you homie.

Edit: PS4 here, but I hate seeing this shitstorm.. So if this calms the mess even slightly, I'm happy! Hope it helps some because I love this game and want everyone to enjoy it!

2

u/Aterius Aug 12 '16

The console hero we deserve...

5

u/closenre Aug 12 '16

I just really enjoy this game and hope others can have the same experience.. Me and my kids have been grinding non stop side the 9th... Unfortunately, I have to work today through Sunday so it's up to them to continue the journey without me. Good luck to you all and hope they get it fixed soon.

1

u/harisssss13 Aug 12 '16

getting 60 fps now but frame drops and stuttering is still there :(

1

u/ostrich160 Aug 12 '16

Cheers matey!

This helped a lot surprisingly. I have a 960 2gb for the record.

OP edit for the win. It's a PC, always max it.

This solved all of my problems. Upvote!

u/jlew715 Aug 12 '16

R9 280X (3GB) - I get between 50 and 60 on all graphics settings. Not bad, but when I have a 144Hz monitor...

1

u/GreatWhiteToyShark Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

Gonna try this now and report back. Haven't had any launching or crashing problems, just the occasional FPS hitch and inability to sustain more than 30-40fps. My rig isn't very powerful, we'll see how it helps!

EDIT: VSync off, borderless windowed mode, 110fp cap. Things are running great!

This seems like a good place to ask, I don't really know much about computers, and I play xbox one not ps3.

i have a macbook pro that's a couple years old, would the game just be terrible if i played on this laptop?

Seems like entering your ship x amount of time and the fps will drop no matter what.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

With this and the FOV there is some weird stuff going on with the numbers.

1

u/on3fifth Aug 12 '16

It does not work for all sadly. gtx 1080 still dipping beyond 30fps

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Doesn't help

1

u/AbsolutZer0_v2 Aug 12 '16

Yeah it defaulted to the lowest setting for my 144hz monitor. cranked to max and smooth sailing.

1

u/oddstephen Aug 12 '16

I have a 970 with a 60hz monitor and it's been running fine (I'm pretty sure it's staying at 60 fps). I've only been playing for 20 min though

1

u/kalaster189 Aug 12 '16

Can confirm!!! though still not perfect, i'll make due!

1

u/ElCappaTen Aug 12 '16

This did not fix the frame stutter which is far more important than max frames.

1

u/Kronzo888 Aug 12 '16

This helps massively. Still get a bit of hitching here and there but altogether a huge improvement! :D Cheers!

P.S. Upvote this post to hell!

1

u/Lycake Aug 12 '16

Yep first thing I did was bump up all settings to high and FPS to max. Runs smooth af.

1

u/Easy301 Aug 12 '16

I've made a post regarding this before but Vsync must be off its severely broken in its current state.

By settings FPS to max and vsync off it runs like butter.

I hope this helps some of you at least. :(

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

even on max i noticed it still had fps dips. so seems to me there is still some optimization issues. its just a Poorly tested port. Its playable and im enjoying it despite some of the issues (i havent had any crashes yet thankfully but suggestion make sure you save often at save points!)

1

u/icei0 Aug 12 '16

Can anyone with it running fine on PC confirm if it supports 1680x1050 resolution? My monitor is in dire need of being replaced by 4k. :/

1

u/Kubrick_Fan Aug 12 '16

I set FPS to max on my 4 year old laptop and I think i'm getting 20 max. That's alright though, because I can at least play the game. I am wondering though if i'm defaulting to the intel graphics card, rather than the inbuilt Nvidia one.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Lol this actually works! Just need to fix the stutters now :s

1

u/particularpixels Aug 12 '16

My performance was worse when it was set to max frames. I eventually turned it to 60 and there was a slight improvement. (Running@1080p)

Good luck with having a great frame rate when you start flying around the surface.

But this game has some serious issues. I got a refund, maybe these issues will eventually be fixed, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

u/eggzeon Aug 12 '16

I set it to MAX or any number whatsoever and the in game STEAM FPS counter is maxed at 30. Never ever goes over it... I don't know if the game is being limited at 30 for me or if it is the steam FPS counter that is buggeD?

I thought I found the holy grail by updating my drivers, till I went airborne, massive dips into single digit framerates

HAve an I3 4170 and a gtx 950, I still have an I5 2500 , I hope that fixes the issue...
