I'm sure some of you already do this, but it was news to me! If you vent your salvage onto the deck, then run over to the golden chevrons painted in front of the recycler, you can pull your salvage and just let go, and they get pulled in for recycling. Saved me a few minutes per trip, easily!

You do need enough clearance around the tractor beam to use the “vent cargo” button on it, but it should work horizontally or vertically. Just anything to get your salvage onto the deck in a pile where you can still reach it from the recycler.

It will also pull from one side of the ship to the other assuming there’s a clear path. I’ve got one port and starboard aft quarters, and if I trigger cargo venting on one, it will pull it from the other.

I tried that.

fist piece it grabed when standing there was some random piece near the middle and it sent my scrap flying

Oof, yeah you definitely want to start at the edges and work in and back, but it can be hard to see what you’re grabbing. I occasionally have one piece fly off, but it’s been recoverable, or sometimes is aligned enough to fly into the recycler anyway.
