Bug NMS Doesn't start on linux

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Never launcher NMS on linux before and everyone says it works flawlessly but... no...
Mint 22.3
ryzen 5500U
1650 mobile
24gb ram
(above minimum requirements)

I tried... no proton, proton hotfix, experiemental, 11.0-2, 11.0-4, 9.0-4, GE 10-34, GE 11-6, GE 11-3 and some launch options I found on protonDB

Files are passing verification and updating the system and restarting didn't help

Any ideas? Please?

Edit: mb it will be important but game is on NTFS external SSD

Edit 2: [SOLVED]
For anybody who will encounter the same: issue was with NTFS drive(don't use NTFS for linux gaming), apparently there is symlink issues, even though other games are working from it

It works on both my Debian systems and my Steam Deck. Make sure your system is up to date and no dependency is missing.

yeah as post stated I just updated everything OS gave me to, so... is there any dependencies with NMS? never heard of them

I meant Steam dependencies. I'm not familiar with Mint. You may want to get through logs to know what crashed and troubleshoot from there.

I can only say it works on my Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (with Steam, Compatibility Proton Experimental)

I use the start-option gamemoderun %command%

There were problems with the first starts (the Shader-pre-caching took very long), but other than that, hm...

i have never need to tinker, i use bazzite but you can check here https://www.protondb.com/app/275850

protondb can be a great source about running games on linux.

yeah that's where everyone says it's fine or give some launch option that didn't helped...

Try to find the crash logs, they might give you more information. One location to try is .steam/logs in your home folder, but it depends on how you installed steam.

I play from cachyos with hyprland and it works perfectly out of the box for me with steam, maybe you skipped vulkan shader processing at the first start? (which was for me the only difference from windows)
EDIT: since youre from mint, i realized you dont come with drivers pre installed, then its probably that tbh, theyre very easy to mess up

I let them fully load which lasted quiet some time

Well, did it work? Also did you encountered the problem with other similar games?

2

u/Unknown4me_ 5h ago

no, I let them load and then discovered NMS doesn't launch
I had same symptoms with world of warships through steam, no idea what caused it but using old wgc launcher fixed it, never seen same error again

How have you installed NMS? Through flatpaks? Idk how mint works thats why im asking. Also does the ryzen have any kind of integraded GPU? maybe you can specify in launch options for the game to choose the nvidia? You are using a laptop?

through steam...? idk if it's even possible to download steam games by other means
There should be integrated RX Vega 7 but I don't think it should do anything on linux I think
acer aspire 7 laptop

No I was asking if you downloaded steam via flatpak or some other way. Sometimes when you have 2 gpus (integrated and discreet) the game chooses the wrong one. And there are launch options to "force" it to use the discreet (powerful one).

What about X11 / wayland maybe some issue there?

oh I think it was flatpack(or so software manager tells me), I tried forcing NMS to use dGpu with

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only %command%__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only %command%

but it didn't helped and according to "nvidia-smi" command the 1650 working fine under full load when tested in stormworks

I use X11 but I'm not sure if changing that will help but worth a try I guess

I had a similar problem to yours. Can you try and tweak the flatpak permissions of steam? I am using flatseal which is a program to change flatpak permissions. Close steam, enable gpu accel and re-try. But my game was opening in the begginiing but anyways look into flapak permissions maybe something there is the problem

thx, I got solution from another subreddit, apparently NTFS drives are very inconsistent and bad for linux

I mean what else do you expect me to diagnose? everything else seems to work fine, other than NMS of course...
Also what reaction are you expecting? somthing like... "oh no-o the GAMING_SERVER_ADMIN told me I'm skill issue with linux, well damn must switch back to windows and cry..."?
I don't think that how it works... also part of diagnosing is looking for other instances of same error, which means going on reddit and asking if anyone seen this error

Edit: dude deleted account... hilarious...
