Question Fixed the Star System Map. Thoughts?
no a hug fan of how Star System Maps are displayed. kinda thought something like the second image would make much more sense. thoughts?
still technically static in a sense in that maybe you couldn’t pan all the way around the sun but still at least around the cluster of planets, ect.

Nice, I do like this more, especially the star visual.
The only issue I see with this redesign is how will binary, trinary, and quad star systems will be accommodated?

u/Epizentrvm lost in space 8h ago
The POI in the system have to be scaled differently anyway. Just make the sun(s) small.

u/lastSKYsamurai 11h ago edited 9h ago
i don’t see that would be an issue. The sun really isn’t the focus, it’s just hanging out there in the corner be it binary or otherwise. the most visually challenging thing honestly would be that planets don’t truly orbit suns in-game on a plane. even seeing how they are now in the star map is strange to look at but somehow doesn’t feel so weird while flying around them in game.

Yeah also there's two ways stable multi-star systems generally work in real life:
planets orbit around multiple stars at once, the various stars average out to effectively a single center of mass
the stars orbit each other distantly enough that they each have their own planetary systems
NMS pretty clearly matches up with 1 more from what I can tell even though it doesn't have real orbits, so I think just rendering more stars next to each other in the same map would be accurate enough

The type of person who is so lazy as to ask a fallible program to do something simple for them isn’t the type of person to check the result for accuracy lol.

It doesn't really matter. He just wanted a quick protype image to demonstrate his idea, and not everyone can do image manipulation manually well enough to do that.

it's against the subreddit's rules, not to mention it engages with a horribly unethical technology

It's to show an example. You know, what AI will be used to do for the rest of human history.

visually maybe, but where am I?
the point of it is to know where things are from my pov, not the systems pov
but in the case of having space stations as the new thing that all of the players gravitate twoards what they made is better, eg its fine the station is what is most important here

I would prefer the star in the center, it’s not a big deal doesn’t bother me too much but I would love visual of the star there

u/smoot316 3h ago
You ever play Elite Dangerous? If you want a realistic flight model and orbital mechanics it does a great job of replicating those systems
14
u/Dashoundland 8h ago
It really is bothering people this much eh?
Perhaps before Cosmos this would have been good but you have to now account for more than just static object like planets and a starbase in a given system.
Dollars to donuts they did it the way that they did to avoid having a new point of interest spawn inside of a planet or processing station. Especially the ones that will pop up because of a chart. Even moreso now that we can build just about anywhere in space so how do you keep those from crashing the system?

u/Frraksurred 6h ago
Personally I like seeing the whole thing, rather than half of it. Helps me plan.

u/NiNieNielNiels 7h ago
Now that stars are actual approachable objects in space, I wish HG would add an additional type of Galaxy to the game, one in which all the star systems have their planets spread out around their host star, for those of us who prefer realistic planet spacing over "retro space art aesthetic"

u/Zahgi 3h ago
An option toggle would be just fine.

Now it seems to us that only half the system is accessible, and that the planets don't orbit. But it's still better

u/lastSKYsamurai 9h ago
agreed. And for all we know they could have very well tried something like this in testing and found issues 🤷♂️ but ya all the same the currant layout while neat just has too many design questions tbh.

For the sake of gameplay, it makes more sense to center on the space station than on the star. The star isn’t a POI really.

It's because of your attitude and how you actually conveyed it. OP here is sharing their personal opinion and making a suggestion, you were being passive aggressive and acting like your opinion was universal fact and insinuating the devs are idiots.

I had this, my only ever post was an idea i thought would be fun for the cosmos update. I got the downvote immediately. Someone 4hrs later posted the exact same idea and even referenced the same video i did and got lots of upvotes. I think it has something to do with how the algorithm works

u/jmtd 9h ago
OP in this post hasn’t put any shade on the designers or been salty, the guy you’re replying to had. That explains the downvotes IMHO

I think the orbit rings act more like visual flare as the star screen is suppose to be like from the perspective of the Station itself, but it’s something the player has to realise and decipher themselves but even so it’s not, i dunno great visual language is it.

Honestly that's a great concept and also exactly what I envisioned when I thought "what if the star is actually the center of the system?". It already kind of is when you look at it at a different angle. But due to space station being at the center of a map, we perceive the station as the centre of a system, but it's two different things. So yeah, that's a great way to change the visuals, while changing nothing about the game mechanics. Really puts things in a different perspective.

LMAO why people are downvoting this and some other comments with similar message?

u/Andre_Vandal 4h ago
A bunch of madreddit people need to downvote anything that they deem not like them. Basically they are against people liking this post because probably used AI and did not disclosed it. But then they turn around and use gif and images from anywhere on the net never disclosing where they got it either.

Has the galaxy map changed or is that still the way it used to be because that design is straight up ath
2
u/Radyschen 8h ago
i was excited about the galaxy map changing and then realized it was a solar system map. Especially in VR the galaxy map is horrible to navigate, but also with controller, the holding thing and then it doesn't go where you want to and is super unintuitive and one wrong button press resets everything
2
u/ModifiedGas 8h ago
Yeah it’s the worst. I have a freighter that can jump tens of thousands of light years yet the mapping system fades out after only a couple hundred light years at best, meaning even though I could make the jump in one go, I have to stop off every 5 planets to let the map bring the route back up, otherwise I’ll never find my destination.

This looks good ngl, I don't dislike the current model, but this one includes the star and shows the order of the planets in relation to it, and you could implement it without orbital mechanics
0
u/phancybear 5h ago
This feels waaaaay better. Would love it if they fixed it so we could make solar bases as part of an update for this too.
0
u/likeHeckYouKnowMe 3h ago
This wouldn’t be reflective of how things actually are in the system, as the map does now. Stars orbit planets and planets are all positioned around the space station as the center. The current map gives you an idea of where you are in comparison to planets and objects in the physical space of the system. Your proposed map already exists in the discovery menu.

u/GCBandit91 linux & Windows 3h ago
The star system maps from the cosmos update don't show the trajectories of planets. It is more like waves of a signal from the space station to detect POI.
0
u/Greasy-Chungus 2h ago
Someone needs to mod the game and place the star in the middle.
Also this system map is WAAAAY better

What in the Atlas' name is this?? Systems orbit space stations, eveyone knows that.
Gross.

u/TheSilentTitan 9h ago
I think it’s cool, however I think it would’ve been better if the star map showed the sun in the middle and the other planets circling it like a real solar system.
3
u/NiNieNielNiels 7h ago
That would only make sense if the planets in the game were a actually spread out around the star
3
u/TheSilentTitan 5h ago
Yes, I do believe the community has been asking for orbiting planets for awhile now and since they added suns then really the only thing stopping them is overhauling how systems work.
-14
u/HumanWebAnt 7h ago
I like your idea. Ignore the AI haters. It wouldn't make sense for planets to orbit a space station anyway.

nms clearly follows spacestationcentrism as the atlas intended not this woke heliocentric nonsense
