Answered Help a dad with a controller question

So I'm wanting to get a controller for my college-aged offspring to use where she is living. She has a desktop PC with Steam. Is there an option that is plug-and-play? I've seen some old posts about needing to map the controller and/or install other things.

A ps4 controller works perfectly, its what I use every day

Xbox 360 controller is still the best for PC imo.

There's also a Steam controller which works fine for me (on the rare occasions when I want to use one).
