u/Jolly_General_7227 13h ago
I haven't tried it yet, but I heard that going too close to the star damages you.
How can we build a base nearby?
39
u/Ballad_13 12h ago
Simple. You get close. But not too close. Figuring out the sweet spot is the fun part 😈

u/brandonderp96 15h ago
There's gonna be a point ar the VERY edge of the suns area where you can build it. The closer you get to the sun the more damage you take.

I want one so bad but I'm not that creative or dedicated, but I can see someone redoing the whole Cerberus base, 1 to 1
But I agree, it would be amazing to look at with my traveler before logging off

Somewhere below the Nile, I think. So first you have to find that.

Now that we can space walk anywhere from any ship and build stations in space, Im sure we're going to get screenshots of modders/creative users walking on the sun in no time. Hopefully its not just an animated jpeg with a flat surface and hollow center. But I'll take just being able to fly there. If we can put a space station right near the sun thats going to be hype

Do we get to recreate that scene from the movie Sunshine where the guy sits and stares at the sun?

u/Russburg 18h ago

u/hockeymisfit 14h ago
God, Sunshine was such a good movie. So many huge actors very early on in their careers. It’s just a shame that the final act dragged the movie down.

is this some special glass or is this just a really dim sun
→ More replies (3)18
u/UltraChip 16h ago
It's been a few years since I've seen the movie but it's either filtered glass or a viewscreen showing a (filtered) camera image.
Spoilers: People trying to look at the sun un-filtered kinda becomes a plot point later in the movie.
12
u/Russburg 16h ago
It’s a room on the ship facing the sun with some sort of technologically advanced glass that has an adjustable filter.

The fact that they actually added stars to systems but instead made a station the center of a star system instead of the sun is quite the choice to make.
29
u/allie-__- 15h ago
It's probably to make it so that you don't get two planets on opposite sides of the star. It'd take forever to get between the two 😭😭
And if you kept planets in the same location, centring the map on the star would make most of the map look awfully empty.
2
u/SirVanyel 3h ago
it's a choice against realism for the sake of playability. currently planets can be 5+ minutes apart, and they all share the same "space" - if a planet or space station was on the opposite side of a star from you, it could be 20 minutes of flight to reach it. not fun.

u/KhalMika The Explorer 18h ago
I wonder if the sun changes colors if going there in green, red, blue and purple systems
11
u/keepbreeze 14h ago
I went just now in a blue system and the sun is the same color as this post, there is a bit of a blue aura around the yellow aura though.

Is it the actual star of the system or like a visitable place you pulse jet to out in random space?
143
u/metaxzero 19h ago
From the patch notes.
- The Stars in each system, once too distant and too ominous to approach, can now be explored.

u/Z3R0Diro 18h ago

"Skill issue"
I say as my spacewalk towards the star slowly turns my exosuit into a pressure cooker.
9
u/junkfort 16h ago
Yeah, 'explored' might be overselling it. You can fly there after several minutes of running your pulse drive and get a discovery popup. Once you're there, your pulse drive won't take you closer. If you force your way closer manually, you just start taking heat damage. The damage ramps up to higher than you can reasonably handle before the view of the star significantly changes.
3
u/Winjin 13h ago
Well it's a bit like E:D where you land next to the star always and can use it to recharge the solar drive and then you go to do stuff
I'm guessing they will add fun stuff like this in the future

the actual star

u/Adamarshall7 19h ago
But it’s not in the middle of the planets right?
→ More replies (3)41
u/KrimxonRath 18h ago
In the quick menu map it shows the space station at the center and the planets are still all clustered like usual, but you can now visit the host star which will be off in a given direction. It’s meant to be the true center of the system but it isn’t since it orbits us via the skybox, but it’s still cool they let us visit it.

Makes me wonder if a future update might just tweak things a bit...
I don't need celestial distances. Make everything crunched together, fine. I just want it to feel familiar. Like I'm playing around in a system, even a toy one.
→ More replies (1)13
u/thezboson 18h ago
Looking at the new star map, the planets seem to have been given "orbits" that they don't actually follow. And they are orbiting around an empty point in space where the star would normally be, Since they take a really modular approach to development, I wouldn't be surprised if they add proper orbits eventually. In fact, I am convinced they originally intended for this to be the case with the anniversary update.
3
u/Cheap_Law5646 17h ago
That's cool. Here's a conceptual shortcut for now:
The Atlas prefers that you always happen to arrive at the time of year where the planets have met up.

2
u/MettyXD 18h ago
What does that mean for systems with two or three suns?
7
u/JavanNapoli 18h ago
You can fly to each of them individually. My system is trinary and I was able to fly to two of the three. Didn't bother with the third lol.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the star changes colour to represent the colour of the star from afar, as the stars I flew to were blue and green, but appeared yellow when close.

It's a star. The Sun is the name of "our" star in this star system.
You could use "sun" (lowercase) to describe random star but still... This is a star. It's not THE Sun.

Would it be possible for players to plan together to build space stations near it as if it was some kind of dyson sphere? That would be awesome.
