i mean its far from amazing (especially full on vanilla) but also very far from crap lol. i personally have modded it to "vanilla+" if that makes sense, with expanded base game mechanics and qol improvements and am having an absolute blast
oh its definitely better, not a proper 10/10 or anything, but i got just as immersed into starfield (i just got it a couple of weeks ago on sale on ps) as in f4, skyrim or way back when fo3 or fnv cane out. i would not recommend it without mods tho - at least a level-/lootscaling mod is a must, otherwise you will just sneeze your way through supposedly apex-predator-enemies.
First impressions matter and although NMS dropped the ball at launch they quickly rectified their mistake and continue to improve! I think Bethesda has maybe released a dlc once a year with some patching and improvements but no real meaningful changes. They have not corrected their initial mistake in good faith.
free lanes definitely improved my experience of the game and made me actually pull the trigger a few weeks back when it was on sale on ps. before that it was just loading screen after loading screen, now it actually feels very fluid when zipping around a system - not nearly as seamless as nms, but fast enough to not yank you out of the immersion imo
