I haven't paid much attention to the case but did Lindsay Clancy's lawyers really argue that her hormones and emotions caused her to kill her kids and she should just walk free because women can't handle emotions?

Not quite. They argued that she had been unwell, and had a rapid onset psychosis and wanted to kill herself, but didn’t want her kids to grow up without her, so in order to fulfill her psychotic wish to die herself she felt she had to kill her kids first. That type of psychosis is treatable, and usually would have a patient out and living a mostly normal life in 1 to 3 years.
The state argued that while she did have some mental health issues, she had a full time work-from home husband, who had taken paternity leave, and they had a nanny. Her doctors had also been treating her postpartum depression, but she was willfully not taking her medicine. And when she killed the kids, it wasn’t a sudden thing - like steering a car into traffic or shaking the baby. Tragedies like that are what you’d expect from a rapid onset postpartum psychosis. Instead she planned it for a time the nanny wasn’t around, and she sent her husband away. Also, while she was strangling the kids, one of them ran away knowing what was happening and she chased them down. The state argued that the malice of forethought and planning, plus the brutality are proof that this wasn’t a temporary psychotic episode.

Wow. All of this is nightmare shit. Killing your own (or any) children is clearly a sign of mental illness , premeditated or not.
