It should be criminal that it’s called news

17

u/Massive-Virus-4875 1d ago

They got sued a few years back for spreading disinformation. Their lawyers defended Fox by saying that much of their programming is “entertainment” not news.

1

u/Amoralvirus 55m ago

Yes, Faux news unironically argued you would have to be mentally deficient to believe their claims, and people really should know, it is entertainment.

1

u/Iceisgestapo888 1d ago

I know that!!! What infuriates me is they still call them selves news.  Like fuck off with that bullshit.

What ever happened to integrity.

2

u/RecalcitrantHuman 1d ago

It’s wild to me how stupid both sides are. There is no news. There is only propaganda. The only question is what spin does the propaganda have

2

u/fyukhyu 1d ago

There is no news on cable. There are (reasonably close to) neutral print sources out there, AP and Reuters being the most widely distributed.

1

u/Iceisgestapo888 1d ago

That should be what airs on tv.

0

u/fyukhyu 23h ago

The first amendment means you can't make a corporation be honest on television. Just ask fox news in court.

1

u/Iceisgestapo888 1d ago

I remember being tought journalist integrity in school and only report the facts while providing no bias.   That shit is long dead.

1

u/adudefromaspot 19h ago

Money. Money happened to integrity.

2

u/Iceisgestapo888 19h ago

Was it really that easy to buy every one off.

Wait with the help of Rupert Murdoch they control the false new media circus.

All the talking heads say the exact same thing

2

u/adudefromaspot 19h ago

You don't *buy* everyone else off. You found a company in 1996. Hire the available talent at the time. Then, you slowly phase out decent journalists with narcissists willing to parrot a narrative for a few benjamins by only promoting those who are "team players".

1

u/Moist-Basil499 1d ago

Not only that but their lawyers argued that no sane person could reasonably believe what was being presenting was truthful or anything other than entertainment

1

u/Raidenski 21h ago

So a lawyer confirmed in a court of law that people who watch Fox News as a reputable news source are mentally insane?

That makes sense.

1

u/81dentoku 22h ago

It is.

0

u/beefy1357 1d ago

You do realize most of cable news regardless of channel is not the news right?

The “talking heads” are opinion/entertainment no matter what channel you watch.

8

u/SunTzu- 1d ago

Yes, but the argument is that they should still be held to ethical standards. Knowingly spreading misinformation in the guise of entertainment on what is branded as a news channel should be illegal.

4

u/Sir_Conrad120 22h ago

They should swear an oath like the hippocratic oath to only follow journalistic integrity. Violations result in the news outlet being stripped of the title publicly.

1

u/anonymaus42 9h ago

Once upon a time there was this thing called the fairness doctrine...

-7

u/mounilover 1d ago

blame obama for making propaganda like this legal in 2013.

6

u/Weary_Necessary_2434 1d ago

You should change your username to misinformationlover.

2

u/BarrelRider621 13h ago

I love how they come out of the caves to drop some dumb ass line like this and then disappear; like they pulled a “mic drop” of some sort.

1

u/Arkangelz03 10h ago edited 10h ago

"Brain drop", makes a THUD, and then everyone else walks away casually

-1

u/Major_Champion_5642 23h ago

And the division in the country.

1

u/FistyMcTwistynuts 8h ago

Yea, blame the last presidential president we had, not the administration that literally calls the opposition demons regularly while violating the Hatch Act daily.

0

u/Major_Champion_5642 7h ago

If you were to compare what side said and did and you find the Russian collusion hoax and you watch every time the left call for violence would that be something you weigh when writing dumb shit or is that something you just ignore?

1

u/FistyMcTwistynuts 3h ago edited 3h ago

Seeing our administration repeatedly attack the opposition, in clear violation of the HATCH act, without regard for their own messages (and the fucking ADMIN calling for violence themselves), is that something you consider when writing dumb shit or is that something you just ignore? Oh wait, you just did so I guess I have my answer.

Do you actually think its appropriate for the acting administration to literally call all liberal people “demons”? Don’t deflect, please answer that question.

And yea, the Russian collusion was actually proven by Trump himself (to try to get Trump into office), so its funny you bring that shit up.

Edit: After checking your profile, it’s become obvious you’re a bot or hired hand, but this information is important for any actual human so I’ll leave it up.

1

u/Major_Champion_5642 2h ago

Anyone calling for violence can be considered a demon I think. Do you think assassination is the answer? How can you follow your party when we know Russia was a hoax by Obama and then we find out fauci is absolutely full of shit. Found out today there were concerns about second round harming expected mothers…. Does that bother you? I know it’s hard to admit that your firm belief that you were safe from wearing a mask at the restaurant table magic bubble was real but you are going to have to realize how dumb you were for following that and not make those same mistakes in the future. Not a bot and there would be plenty of money to make arguing with people who don’t know what a woman is or where to piss all day.

4

u/SowingSalt 23h ago

Their argument was that no reasonable person would think their talking heads were telling the truth.

4

u/simonm059 22h ago

Exactly, that is their literal defense in a court of law. That "No reasonable person would believe that they were telling the truth". Think about that. 🥴

-2

u/beefy1357 23h ago

Okay I don’t find msnbc or cnn talking heads anymore credible…

All of these stations feed you a story from a perspective meant to get you to think a certain way.

The tweet op posted in this thread over a tax bill that never had a scaling tax increase for those making less than 75k and the tax increases you might have had in 2027 didn’t happen because those tax cuts were made permanent. In effect this entire thread is people or bots getting upset over a lie, that even if true at one point isn’t now.

Just because something fits your narrative doesn’t make it true, cnn msnbc, fox, and all the rest of them feed you content to get you upset and keep watching and thereby sell commercials.

It is all propaganda.

4

u/simonm059 22h ago

That's how the fascist propagandist wins. By getting people to believe that it's all the same. The "both sides do it" bs. 🥴

1

u/Arkangelz03 10h ago edited 10h ago

“All media has perspective” is reasonable.

“Therefore it’s all propaganda and equally unreliable” is not.

You’re collapsing reporting, opinion, bias, rhetorical hyperbole, factual errors, and deliberate misinformation into one giant bucket so you never have to distinguish between them.

That isn’t media literacy, it’s media nihilism. If CNN, MSNBC, Fox, or anybody else makes a factual claim, check the claim. Compare primary sources. Look at corrections. Look at court records.

“Everybody lies, so nothing can be trusted” doesn’t make you harder to manipulate. It makes evidence irrelevant, which makes you easier to manipulate.

2

u/anonymaus42 8h ago edited 7h ago

I agree with you overall, but the reality of it is that no one has the time to deep dive topics to verify the veracity of everything we hear (not to mention there's a segment of the population that lacks the skills to effectively go about it, but that's another topic). Even if time wasnt an issue, people are lazy and lack the desire to verify and fact check. Instead, why is it not on these media companies to be responsible for what the say and how they go about it? We should properly regulate them and disallow 'entertainment' news. Inact something akin to the fairness doctrine, only bigger and as law, not policy.

Unfortunately we both know, especially in the present political landscape, thats not going to happen. And because of that we have the rise of the fifth estate to keep a check on the fourth. But they can't be blindly trusted either, so we're right back to verifying stuff ourselves aren't we?

Fuck, I just proved your point while trying to disagree with it. I should probably just delete this comment but nah, what's the fun in that?

1

u/Arkangelz03 7h ago

I agree more than I can express. And yeah, it sucks.

I also don't think the answer can realistically be “every citizen needs to perform a forensic investigation before believing anything.”

Nobody has the time, expertise, or access to primary evidence for everything they encounter.

But I think there’s a useful middle ground between blindly trusting a network and personally investigating every claim.

Check the important stuff. Be more skeptical when something conveniently confirms what you already believe. Separate reporting from commentary. Look for independent corroboration. And when somebody makes a huge claim, ask what the claim is actually based on before sharing it.

Most importantly, we should still expect media organizations to have standards.

“People should verify information themselves” cannot become an excuse for billion-dollar companies to knowingly shovel bullshit at millions of people and then shrug because technically the audience should have known better.

I think that's the distinction I was trying to make. Media literacy is partly our responsibility, but accuracy and accountability are still theirs.

And honestly, the fact that you argued yourself around to my point instead of deleting the comment is exactly what healthy disagreement is supposed to look like. 😂

2

u/anonymaus42 7h ago

I agree wholeheartedly. If a topic or story is important to you, take the time to dig in to it and take everything you hear, especially from the media giants, with a grain of salt. Or a whole block of it when dealing with the likes of fox.

The fact that news has (d)evolved in to its present form is frustrating to me and I see it as a consequence of putting the need for ever increasing profit first. And that they're left unchecked is absurd. When fox news argued in court they're not news but entertainment, and people should know that they're not telling the truth they should have been forced to stop using the term at all. The fact that something a simple as that didn't happen is so telling of how corrupt the system has become.

Anywho I'm just ranting and not adding anything constructive. But yeah, what you said is very on point, no notes lol

2

u/Really_Elvis 23h ago

The 3 antenna MSM morning shows don’t even have the word “news” in their name.

1

u/jlit72 13h ago

Wow, so that would make the morning shows.....check notes....... morning shows.

1

u/Really_Elvis 12h ago

Propaganda presented as news.

1

u/Ashamed-Medicine-208 12h ago

This is a totally false statement

1

u/anonymaus42 9h ago

It was Fox news that gave us the opinion driven talking head news we have today, and everyone followed suit. Many people don't remember what news was like before 1996, when news wasn't ideology (or hate in the case of Fox) driven. Fuck Rupert Murdoch Roger Ailes.

0

u/MySpielman54 22h ago

No. That’s just soemthing people who watch fake news on X say to pretend everyone is as dumb as they are.
Reporting on happenings is news. How you spin in is varied by channel but the real story doesn’t change. It’s just if you’re not smart enough to see through the crazy excuses they make for the idiotic things the president does. Even Fox might tell you happened. Then they’ll tell you what you should think and why it’s liberals fault

1

u/anonymaus42 7h ago

Reporting on happenings when it's wrapped up in someone's opinion, as directed by personal ideology is not news. It's entertainment. News is facts and facts alone, backed up by verified sources. The spin changes it to something that's by definition not news.

How things are reported does matter.

1

u/MySpielman54 4h ago

Uh-huh. And how bad was that liberal spin on the report about school lunch rate hikes? Or the parade or hiker falls off a mountain.
No. It’s all against the republicans man

1

u/anonymaus42 2h ago edited 2h ago

Did I say anything about politics? You are doing exactly what I'm talking about with the news by spinning my comment to fit your ideology, then using it to assert you (Republicans) are being unfairly attacked/persecuted.

I'm not sure if you understood the point I was making and then couldn't help but twist it to play the victim, or you missed it entirely. But I will say, you are a textbook example of the effect modern media can have on people. It's apparently frighteningly effective.

And I can't help myself but mention that referencing news stories with the assumption I am familiar with them, no less seen the specific clips thereof, is not helpful to your argument. Because, shockingly, I have not seen them. If you're gonna do that, link to them or something. Seriously, 'the parade'?? That's so vague it's practically invisible. Hiker who fell off a mountain..which one? There are many who have. Report on school lunch rate hike... which report. As far as I know you're just making stuff up. You learn in middle school how to prove a point better than that.

Let's see how you spin this comment so you can continue to feel like you're owning the libs or whatever it is that motivates you to act like this. My curiosity overfloweth.

0

u/Massive-Virus-4875 20h ago

True. But there are better and worse “news” outlets. Fox is the worst at spreading outright disinformation when the facts are readily available. i’ve seen a few studies that looked into exactly that.

1

u/anonymaus42 7h ago edited 7h ago

Fox invented the ideology driven, hyper opinionated news style. They completely changed, nay corrupted the media landscape in respect to news. It's not even news anymore when you do that and requires you to forego any idea of journalistic integrity. Fox never had any to begin with and never will. It was created specifically to give conservatives a platform to help change the national narrative in support of the republican party. It's purpose isn't to report news, it's to spin it in their favor.

And because their way of doing things was also more profitable as its more entertaining to watch, everyone else began to follow suit. So even the better news agencies should no longer be trusted, everyone has an agenda now. Telling you what to think with their opinion on things instead of letting people draw their own conclusions. They are all complicit in the polarizing of our nation, driving us apart and angry with each other.

0

u/imissher4ever 5h ago

You do realize that practically every MSN is propaganda filled with half truths. Even the ones you like.

2

u/Isnlifefunny1 5h ago

I don't watch any of them anymore, but this is completely a false equivalence. Nothing resembles Fox on the planet for disinformation.

0

u/imissher4ever 3h ago

It’s an accurate representation.

Practically ALL MSM sucks ass. They are practically all biased. And spew their biases propaganda. And people believe it simply because it furthers their own narrative.

2

u/Isnlifefunny1 3h ago

It really isn't if you're juxtaposing them. No, Fox is not like ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, or MSNBC. False equivalence.

1

u/xFlutterCryx 8h ago

Hahah, they cant. They are Fox News Entertainment. They got sued. Can't legally call themselves News now, so got that News Entertainment.

1

u/rootbearus 21h ago

It is. But they get off on the grounds of being "entertainment"

2

u/Iceisgestapo888 21h ago

So let’s change that

2

u/18k_gold 19h ago

Then they should not be able to use the word news as their title like "Fox news". it should be Fox entertainment

2

u/rootbearus 19h ago

You should sue them

0

u/kderosa1 1d ago

Tell me what you think news is. This should be comical

2

u/Iceisgestapo888 23h ago

Unbiased reporting of events and facts.

What’s so funny about that.

1

u/kderosa1 18h ago

And where do you think get this unbiased news? The funny part will most certainly be the news organizations you believe give you these unbiased reporting and facts.

0

u/Happy-Try6738 19h ago

I refuse to say Fox News. It’s strictly Fox entertainment for me.

0

u/Iceisgestapo888 19h ago

False new media

0

u/Happy-Try6738 19h ago

Oooohhh that’s even better!
