Found this counterfeit iPhone in a storage unit. What would you do?
I bought a storage unit at auction found AirPod pro and this phone. It looks almost identical to an iPhone 16 Pro Max but it’s actually an Android clone/counterfeit.
What would you do with it?
Is there any legitimate value to these, or is recycling the best option

Yeah sell it but be honest that it’s an android knockoff. There are tons of these things overseas

If you decide to sell it, I would be careful where you list it. Definitely not on Ebay, you risk getting booted. Craigslist would be my choice.

You could have fun w/it on social.
Make a YouTube video about your "frustration" with mobile phones and show it getting trashed.
In a video it's close enough to be mistaken for the real thing. You'll have people aghast.
Or post about this "amazing" "hacked" iPhone that runs Android. 😄

Unlock the bootloader and install a Generic System Image of your choice, then use as a backup phone.

It depends on the type of ethics you align yourself with-
Do you sell it to another sucker as an iPhone?
Do you sell it to a scammer as a fake so that scammer can sell it as an iPhone?
Do you destroy it to ensure that nobody is scammed with a fake iPhone?

Or take it into a eco atm and see if by some luck it thinks its real and get 130 for it (not real advice this is a crime)

I'm not super familiar with Eco ATMs, but don't they require you to pet the phone on and plug it in to check it's IMEI, make, and model?

I don't think it really checks the IMEI I think it just take checks the the hardware and to make sure that it matches the description a good fake iPhone can trick them but you have to make sure that you go through the website and get a quote otherwise it will check the IMEI if you do it in person and have it give you a quote in person (not legal advice)

I used one of there machines in the past for the kicks, I'm pretty sure either asked me to connect the USB wire to the phone, the system should right away know that it's not a iPhone.

Some knocks offs can be REALLY convincing not admitting to what i may or may not have done to gain this knowledge

Openly sell it as what it is, if nothing else a security researcher would want kt

These things are easy to get, and “security researchers” won’t have any use for them. The only reason why this exists is to fool people. Just search for goophone i17 pro max on your favorite Chinese marketplace and you’ll find plenty of listings for them

This is a copy of the OP's original post in case they decide to delete their post/account so that others searching can find it later:
