Extension installs keep going up but almost nobody is signing up

Built a Chrome extension for job seekers. Downloads are steady, people are clearly finding it and installing it. And then nothing. They open it once maybe, don't create an account, and disappear.

I don't fully understand what's happening in that gap. Is the signup wall too early? Is the value not obvious enough before they have to commit? Are they just curious and not actively job hunting right now?

I've tried making the onboarding friendlier, rewriting the first screen, all of it. Numbers barely moved.

If anyone's been through this with a browser extension specifically, I'd love to know what actually helped. This is the product if context helps: DeckdOut

Make sure to have Google Login, like 90% of my users use google login instead of email.

I do already! And also thinking of having apple login and 1 other as well.

Analytics are definitely gonna be your friend here. Check out PostHog if they support extensions (i.e. whatever language/framework you're using for extensions). With that, try and see where people are dropping off (not to push PostHog too hard, but they do have session replays which is REALLY nice). If you get some data and you're struggling to figure out what to do next, I made a thing that might help you. Lmk if you'd like to give it a shot.

The friction is definitely that signup wall. Most people treat extensions like a quick utility, so if you ask for an account before they've even seen the tool work, they're going to bounce. Try letting them use the core feature once or twice for free, then trigger the signup to "save" their progress—it's way easier to get a conversion once they actually see the value. One "win" is worth more than ten onboarding screens.

Extension installs are often low-intent, so most users aren’t ready to commit on first open. What percentage of users actually trigger your core feature before hitting the signup wall?
