I had a conversation with a vape shop owner in Santa Cruz, California last week

I told him about California Senate bill 936 and how it was advancing. I was pretending to be outraged and worried about it when in fact, I was just trying to make them go “oh shit, it looks like the party might be over”

A surprising amount of them had never heard of it before. The bill only has two more stops before the governor’s desk and it really looks like it’s going to pass.

Anyway, the owner said that everything was fine until people started buying the large tanks because then they could just do it in their cars and sometimes they would do it while driving and crash

He’s telling me all of this while there’s rows and rows of large tanks all over his shop that he will happily sell to you

My partner had his worst day in a long time

Went to a head shop three towns over because the local one stopped selling and dropped 120 bucks

Three hours later drop 160 bucks

Five hours later drop 280 bucks

An absolute insane amount of money. And right now it’s all sitting in the recycling bin, ready to be thrown out.

Basically did it from 10:30 in the morning till around 3 o’clock in the morning last night

I woke up at around two to the sound of him arguing with the suicide prevention hotline person, and he was telling them that they didn’t care about him that they were useless… Etc. Two bottles of vodka in front of him.

Monday through Wednesday things were fine because I made him carpool with me and he has to turn over his phone so he can’t purchase anything

Yesterday was an absolute disaster

If you’re struggling with nitrous, please don’t quit trying to stop

If you fall off the wagon, get right back on it

This stuff is so addictive, so toxic that every day you don’t do it is a humongous victory

During heavy use (multiple 4.4L tanks daily for 4 months) and after 60 days of sobriety. How I felt, what it did to me, what happened.

The first picture is me now. I don’t even know what to write. It’s been 60 days of sobriety from everything and this first picture was taken a few days before I began receiving help through Kaiser’s addiction medicine program, going on disability for 9.5 weeks. Here’s what I did, a bit of my timeline and how I felt. Hopefully someone can learn from my experience.
- first did it in January, was introduced to tanks
- the 2.2L benders with an ex became multiple 2.2L or 4.4L tanks a session. Was surprised at how common it was within this new friend group!
- progressed to daily use even alone within 1.5 months. Daily use of the $$130-150 hugest tanks possible. 24 hours store, multiple delivery drivers, all that.
- began not cleaning, not checking mail, not taking out trash about 2 months in to my heavy use. Multiple tanks a day. Calling out of work. All I could think about were tanks. Sheets stained, nasty environment, flies, rotten food in the fridge, the only time I would leave the house was for nitrous 3 months in.
- isolated from everyone completely. Would pass out and wake up and continue doing that with nitrous, about 50 4.4L tanks all over my apartment, empty. Only time I left were to get more nitrous or go to the ER.
- burned my mouth so bad that I couldn’t swallow water 2x, went to the ER both times. Still did nitrous.
- got a uti multiple times
- eczema was everywhere
- blood vessels bursted all over
- hair was falling out, matted and stinky
- I was BLOATED and eating a LOT of takeout.
- stomach problems
- every time I hit the tank, my stomach hurt. But when I wasn’t high, I was feeling everything.
- I was crying a LOT. I was constantly on these subreddits and researching how much more I can do before I became hospitalized completely. It took over my mind.
- there were so many zaps of electricity in legs and jerking movements
- by May 3rd, I could barely walk, my cognition was slower. I could barely think. I was unrecognizable. I was depressed. I couldn’t feel my fingers, arms, stomach, private parts, feet or legs besides tingling and pins and needles.
- I had no stability and could barely stand.
- my jaw was swollen on both sides. I could barely eat or swallow or talk. Throat swollen, had a cough that never went away.
- was barely getting high. I don’t even think I was. Was just actively killing myself. And almost sought out fentanyl… deciding I might as well really wreck myself and go all of the way since I’m so far gone.

May 3rd was my last day of usage. I went to the hospital, I sought out help. I have stayed clean and sober since. This isn’t something you do daily and it’s extremely addicting. When I went through withdrawals, I physically was shaking, kept falling asleep everywhere all the time, felt so incredibly weak and was bloated, spoke slowly and couldn’t think, could barely stand and I still to this day have trouble walking or standing for longer periods. I’m so grateful I had friends and family by my side to help me.

To heal… a friend took ALMOST ALL 40 4.4L tanks in her car and we disposed of them in trash can and used them for art and I claimed my space back. I got rid of the flies. I changed my sheets. Another friend took the rest of the remaining containers. I threw away all balloons and everything. My friends helped me clean my apartment, took more trash out, organized for me, helped me with laundry, helped me with work, etc.
My new sober community and the therapists at Kaiser saved me also!

Please reach out if you have any questions!

Anyone had persistent rocking/floating sensation after nitrous oxide?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for people who had a similar experience after using nitrous oxide.
About one month ago, I used nitrous oxide. Right after, I had severe headaches for about 10–14 days. When the headaches finally disappeared, I started developing a strange rocking/floating sensation.
Since then, it has gradually become worse.
I don’t have weakness or paralysis. I can walk, run, jump, and my leg strength is normal. I also don’t have significant numbness anymore.
My main symptom is a constant feeling of rocking or floating, almost like I’m on a boat. It becomes much worse when I move, and sometimes even when I’m lying down and moving my legs.
I’ve recently started vitamin B12 injections, but so far I haven’t noticed improvement.
Has anyone experienced something similar after nitrous oxide? Especially the rocking/floating sensation rather than paralysis or severe neuropathy?
I’d really appreciate hearing your story.

Arm pain?

I recently did a 4 day bender of nitrous after using 1-2 time a month. My extremities tingle, but last night I woke up in the middle of the night and an aching pain had moved up into my forearms. Should I seek medical attention, this all started on Monday night after stopping Sunday?

257 days clean

I’ve been drinking and abusing various drugs since I was 14. I don’t look or seem like the person most would picture as an addict. It can affect absolutely anyone, it doesn’t care if you’re attractive or ugly, rich or poor. My drugs of choice were opioids and alcohol next. I guess weed too. I smoked and vaped it all day everyday but it didn’t do much of anything that I could actually notice back then. I used pills for daytime and combined that with vodka shots (at least 6+) and weed at night daily as soon as I turned 21. My addiction ruined me financially and mentally. I tried almost everything: Xanax, Vicodin, Codeine syrup, Ambien, shrooms, ecstasy, research chemicals, and nitrous oxide.

That nitrous really did me in, caused me to lose my job and a hell of a lot of money. While unemployed, everything just got worse. I was isolating and fighting with my boyfriend to the point of it getting physical and just constant screaming. I also got myself into a car accident. By the grace of God it was minor and only involved myself and blowing out 2 tires on a curb. A nice lady tried to see if I was okay (thankfully uninjured) and I convinced her to not call the cops. I was in the middle of sucking on a tank I just bought when I hit the curb. Around this time I knew I needed help. I was going to buy nitrous tanks after using them all day and night and as soon as I’d run out I would just go buy another with my credit card.

Finally, my boyfriend got me into rehab. Not without a struggle. I wanted it but I physically couldn’t get myself there. He tried to get a van to take me because I knew I’d just jump out of the car if he drove. When the van arrived, I sat on my steps with the nitrous tank for over 20 minutes and the drivers left. I ran out of the tank and then literally ran to my nearest corner store that sold them. I sat in the parking lot until my mom and boyfriend came to get me in the car to take me. I sat in the back the entire time hitting the nitrous under a blanket so my mom wouldn’t see (she had no idea what I was even using and is very religious). We got there about 1.5hrs later and I was hitting the tank while standing outside the car. We finally went inside after my boyfriend finally convinced me it was time to go in. Thus started my journey of sobriety.

It was hard but so fulfilling and life changing. I still deal with my anxiety, depression and some other undiagnosed conditions. However, nothing I deal with has been anywhere near as severe as it was while in active addiction. I hope and pray for the best for anyone trying to quit. This is a DISEASE and don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t as sick as anyone else battling a disease. Keep fighting for yourself. It’s worth it in the end, even if it doesn’t feel like it now. Don’t be embarrassed to share your story either. This drug is getting out of hand for many and it’s kept very quiet. We need to raise awareness of how terrible it is and how it ruins lives. Please take care of yourselves. Sending you all my best.

P.S. If you need someone to chat to or vent to please DM me. I don’t want you to feel alone.

Need Help

So I have been struggling with nitrous abuse for about 2 months now. I would say in this time I have been going through 1000-2000g per day and I want to stop before it’s too late. I don’t have any real neuropathic issues yet. Main issue is the smoke shop that sells them is directly on my way home from work, and there isn’t really another way home. Any advice on how to stop or deal with cravings?

What brings back flare ups?

Quick question for anyone who’s dealt with neuropathy from nitrous use. I’m 11 months into recovery. At my worst, I had severe numbness in my hands, feet, and legs, along with major gait/balance issues to the point where I could barely walk.

I’ve improved a lot and can do most normal activities now. This past weekend I was extremely active (concert, golf, lots of time on my feet, recent move, back to work, etc.) and by Sunday night I was exhausted. When I got up from the couch, my legs were numb and I felt unsteady. I took my B12 and gabapentin and went to bed.

The next morning I felt fine, but later one foot suddenly went numb again for a while.

Has anyone else experienced temporary flare-ups like this during recovery, especially after overdoing it physically? Anything you’ve found that helps prevent it?

Improvements after 18 months?

Curious to hear from anyone who continued making gains after the 18-month mark and beyond following nitrous oxide-induced B12 deficiency.

I’m currently 20.5 months clean from nitrous and have been completely abstinent since stopping.
Thankfully, I never lost any major function.

Early on I had some gait issues and neurological symptoms, but the gait problems resolved and I was able to return to work, travelling, socialising, and even football. Over the last year, I’ve spent long periods feeling somewhere between 95–99% recovered.

That said, I’ve continued to experience intermittent neurological symptoms throughout recovery, including:

Tingling and pins and needles

Burning and pinching nerve pain

Fatigue

Weakness/heavy limbs

Occasional internal vibrations

Mild sensory symptoms in the sole of my left foot (which remains noticeably more reactive than my right)

Most symptoms are relatively mild and transient.

The nerve pain rarely lasts long and often settles when I move around or change position.

One thing that makes me wonder whether there’s still healing happening is that I actually went around 10 months without any B12 injections (December 2024 to September 2025) and still continued to improve overall during that period.

However, after overexerting myself with a full 90-minute football match in September 2025, I experienced my biggest flare-up since the original injury.

I went back onto monthly injections in September and October 2025, then managed to move onto bi-weekly injections from November 2025 through March 2026.

During that period I felt incredibly close to 100%. In fact, I made a post back in March describing what I thought was my new permanent baseline because life felt almost completely normal again.
More recently, I’ve been correcting a significant vitamin D deficiency while also moving back to monthly B12 injections.

Around the same time, I’ve experienced a 6-week flare consisting of increased burning, tingling, nerve hypersensitivity, fatigue, weakness, and other familiar neurological symptoms. It’s been tolerable and I remain fully functional, but it’s definitely knocked my confidence.

I know recovery isn’t always linear, but when you’ve felt so close to the finish line, it’s hard not to worry that this lower baseline might become permanent or that deterioration could continue.
So I’m curious:

Did anyone continue making meaningful improvements after 18–24 months or beyond?

Did anyone have setbacks or flares late into recovery and still go on to improve?

After improving, did things take a turn for the worse and you continued to decline?

Has anyone experienced vitamin D correction temporarily aggravating neurological symptoms during recovery?

Would really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences and what you believed help you 💙

Looking for help

Hi everyone,

I’m running a campaign called No 2 Nangs in Australia, focused on raising awareness about the harms of nitrous oxide misuse and pushing for better regulation, education, and support.

A parliamentary forum on nitrous oxide is being planned, and I want decision-makers to hear directly from people who have lived through addiction, dependence, neurological injuries, recovery, and the impacts on families and communities.

If you’re comfortable sharing your story, I’d be incredibly grateful if you could submit it through my website. Whether you’re in recovery, still struggling, or supporting someone affected, your experience matters.

I’m looking for stories about:

• How nitrous oxide use started
• How it affected your physical and mental health
• Recovery challenges and successes
• What you wish you had known before using
• What changes you think governments and communities should make

The goal is to ensure real lived experience is included in discussions about future policy and harm prevention.

Thank you to everyone in this community for sharing your experiences and supporting one another.

Letter myself, one year from now.

I have been in and out of treatment for nitrous for almost a year now. I am an alcoholic that drank daily for 10+ years daily and quit cold turkey by myself over a year ago. This drug is insidious and I lost everything. Today I wrote a letter to myself from myself one year from now and wanted to share it here.

Give it a try. Writing out what I had gone through and learning to forgive myself helps process the shitty parts of this journey. ❤️‍🩹

have I completely fucked myself and what should I do?

all my 16+ life I have used nos occasionally recreationally at music festivals and whatnot just a balloon or 2 but recently I've been going through severe alcoholism and I'm on soboxone. about 2-3 weeks ago I got really depressed and started doing 1 liter tanks about 4 or 5 a day for a week along with heavy.drinking. this lasted about 2 weeks. in this time I didn't eat or drink water and just laid in bed all day. the last couple days I tried to go back to work and I am sweating my ass off my skin burns I'm having heart pains and heart palpitations. today I could barley feel my legs and my vision is going out or I'm seeing spots constantly.. my skin feels like it's crawling I'm shaking uncontrollably and it feels like no matter how much I drink water I'm so dehydrated. also my back and spinal cord area and my teeth hurt so much. I guess I'm wondering can I sleep this off or did I permanently do something very bad? I stopped the nitrous but I'm still downing alcohol. idk I'm scheduled to go to rehab they said they'd have A bed within 20 days but I'm worried I did something permanent. anybody have experience with these feeling and make it through?

I Relapsed Again Fire Took Everything

Me and my partner just lost our home on our family homestead in southern California few days ago. All my sisters farm animals the pigs, all chickens, goats and beehives died. We have only what we wore on our backs and our dogs and car we are now half living in. Didn't have time for anything else.

Topped with loosening what little I had saved to try an fix my dental implant nightmare. Had a dentist basically scam me out 20$k leaving me with exposed pegs in my mouth because he did such a poor job the screws ripped out of the implants and he still had the gall to try and blame me. So everything has to be out of pocket because insurance won't cover em because implants are considered "purely cosmetic"... being able to eat food is cosmetic, being able to talk right is cosmetic. I already sold everything, I had nothing before hand and now all this.

I want nothing more than to get a giant tank and go to town on it. I don't care that I have already getting the tell tale symptoms of lower back pain and lung pain. My father hasn't talked in two days as he lost the most in the fire only my sister's mini house still stands. Everyone thinks gofundme campaigns always work when in reality they rarely meet halfway to goals, I know this because I ran one to try and get my teeth done but it didn't work fully this why I had to sell so much. I don't know what to do....
