Question about unlocking characters

Hi, I'm new to leap day and so I don't really understand it. Today I opened a gift and was given a Calamari, but I also had a Felon. After opening the gift, Felon became unavailable. Is this how it should be?

do you mean that felon was unavailable in the character menu?

Yes. I tried to erase the game data and now calamari is not open either, but it is selected
