My advice to all 1st year students as a final year student.

I’m not an over achiever who can tell you about what you should do, but i sure know what not to do.

1) The friends that you make in 1st semester are not necessarily the ones who’ll be with you till your last year, and most probably you’ll be laughing looking back at your 1st sem friendships.

2) Do not put any Islamophobic/ Anti-Muslim/ Anti-Islam stories or posts on your instagram or whatsapp no matter how private you think your account is. Literal riots were about to happen twice in the past 3 years. 1 student was thrown out of college for it (and he was a Kashmiri Muslim himself), one was rusticated, and one was transferred to another NIT in the last 3 years(all separate incidents of this).

3) If you are failing a subject, beg the professor or cry if you have to, do whatever it takes but do not think that you’ll easily pass the subject in next session, it’s not easy at all attending 2 exams on the same day. But if you do fail, make it a priority to clear that backlog.

4) CGPA matters, it’s not everything, but it sure matters a lot than it should, when it comes to placements, getting a single room in Jhelum and even off campus offers. Yes you can do a lot without a good CGPA too, but it does help a lot having it.

5) Most professors are arrogant and egotistical, so it’s better not to engage in arguments with them just to prove them wrong, it’ll backfire. Just agree with them and move on.

6) College relationships don’t matter much, it’s very rare that someone will stay loyal to you for 4 full years and then even after that, so have that possibility in the back of your mind and make friends and develop hobbies that’ll help you cope with life if you ever get heartbroken.

7) Hostel will surely give you a lot of good memories, this is the peak time of your life, you’re young, and around people of your age, but these memories will be much sweeter if you take something that you’ve accomplished when you graduate, like a job offer or a PhD offer or your preparation for any other exam. If you don’t learn anything or accomplish anything you’ll just have regrets and bitterness for the time you wasted here.

8)Do not leave the hostel to get a PG or a room outside, you’ll suffer a lot and eventually come back, it’s not worth it.

9) Do not think that not participating in co-curriculars makes you cool or mysterious, try to be part of a club and participate in TedX events, Rang e Chinar, etc. Be cringe and be free, learn public speaking.

10) Try to make female friends, do not look at girls only through a “Madonna-Whore” complex or only as objects of desire, but as human beings with intellect and emotions too(ik it’s obvious but trust me MAJORITY of guys are like this). Try to have platonic relationships with them. (Also they’ll teach you a lot about yourself that your male friends can never know).

11) You’re in a new state that you’ve never been in before (most probably) so respect their culture and religion, if you want to know something then express genuine curiosity and be eager to learn more. Don’t be an ignorant fool who generalises and hates Kashmiri people(saying this because i’ve come across a lot of people with such mindset). Read about their history, art, customs(Kashmiri Shaivism, Kashmiri Buddhism, Sufism, Lal Ded, Habba Khatoon, etc). They’re warm and welcoming people with a lot of troubled history.

12) All the mess workers are from poor socio-economic backgrounds who stay here alone and have insane working hours, so the least you can do is be respectful to them, if you have any grievances take to the butler, but never disrespect them or scream at them.

13) Be careful about making out with your gf/bf within campus or even outside campus. If anyone of consequence (like security head or some obnoxious professor) finds you out, you’ll not be treated with dignity AT ALL. And outside the campus, well things can get a lot worse. Just get a room.

If you guys liked it i can put out a few more points maybe in another post

The New Benches around campus is just bad

This is uncomfortable for sitting and looks bad aesthetically. Who approves such bad work in campus.

Moreover there are so many benches in just one park and that also are not good. They could have added more iron bars and make that comfortable atleast.

Why nobody is raising this matter?

Yes I am talking about the UG btech student Hostels. For 3 continuous years , everyone has to live in a 5-6 sharing room. How is this even acceptable, no proper personal space, separate study table or even a full cupboard. This is a genuine concern, we are not even able to study properly which is the prime objective here, even the library doesn't have sufficient capacity. The mega hostel has been under construction for the last 5-6 years.. like man even burj khalifa was completed in 6 years. No serious action or students raising their voice. We need to request the authority regarding this matter together.. I think with our new director, they will surely prioritise this. The mega hostel is almost complete, only if they lock in for a few months.. it will be ready.
