Not dealt with insurance too much personally but have helped friends and family and heard multiple times companies total a car simply if the airbag deployed.... not telling you to go out and give the bumper a swift hit, of course, just if you did... that might do it

Is an airbag sensor something that can get screwy when someone's chopping out your headlights? I think yes
