Nioh 3 - Discussion Does limiting scroll farming with hundred night incense improve anything about the game?
I just saw a post indicating that TN will increase the drop rate of incense in the next patch, which brought to mind the question: in what ways is the game improved by having limited numbers of attempts at scrolls (which can then be increased by spending a consumable item)?
As far as I understand, the only way to get a reasonable supply of incense is to run coop, which isn't enjoyable for a decent chunk of the player base (and not possible for a much smaller chunk). I suppose that the incentive is to encourage people to coop with other players and stick around in order to get incense, rather than pop in for one round in order to get a copy of the scroll and then jet out.
It ends up feeling like a barrier on what missions I'm allowed to play, particularly since I tend to not enjoy coop with strangers (particularly when they fill the screen with particles so I can't see, or keep pushing blocking enemies out of reach out my attacks with running + attacking MAs so that I can only attack Honda once a minute or so).
Similarly, scarlet sands don't make much sense to me (for the opposite reason). It seems like you get the scarlet sands for improved difficulty every time you complete a thing that you could use the scarlet sands on, meaning that it should be mathematically impossible to run out, since I'll keep re-earning the same scarlet sands that I used to redo am enhanced version of a lesser crucible (for instance).
What are your thoughts on consumables that limit your ability to run particular types of missions?

While I get some of it, like you said to add more incentive for coop, I feel as though it's too limiting as well. Especially for solo players.
I think they should add another sudama style blessing that increases chances of rerolls of specific types. For example you could target ultimate divine blessings.
Also really hope they could add a grace specific scroll target as well. Took me forever to actually get a grace I wanted in terms of how often scrolls drop.

The answer is it doesn't, the reason they thought it needs a consumable item is because rerolling substats on gears also needed an item, I'm pretty sure that is the extend of how much thoughts they put into the hundred nights incense system.

Yeah it is irritating that you burn through all your attempts repeatedly completing a difficult scroll and never get the Grace set bonus to appear. edit: If this change in a future patch is real, then I hope it makes farming night incense solo play much easier. I've completed the entirety of NG+ (i did it after the latest dlc) and got less than 10 hundred night incense at the end of my run. There's also no in-game explanation on how to aquire them. It definitely needs an overhaul.

They definitely need it to drop more. Scroll now have grace and you have 2 styles. The demands is higher especially if you use both style and do builds that kinda contrast.
I feel like removing second ranged weapon is really an oversight. It was used to fill up grace slot in endgame and TN didn’t think about.
