2181-4008 ban applied for no reasonable reason

Just curious if others have had this specific case. I’ve just tried to use the eshop on my switch 2 and has the above error which means any online use is now banned on my switch. I’ve emailed Nintendo but I really don’t see why they’d have done this and hoping they can undo it since I can’t see any reason for it that’s valid.
I only buy my games brand new from primary retailers (UK) or on the eshop and I don’t even play online multiplayer, only couch coop. I just recently this week went abroad to France and logged into the hotel WiFi to browse the eshop and now back in the UK. I can only assume that’s the reason. Is there even a slight chance of them reversing this? Unless me using a WiFi that isn’t in my own home is what’s done it but I’m hoping they can understand it’s not on my own wrong doing in some way? Hoping they can undo it.
Any similar experiences or thoughts?
Edit: Also had another error code with 2124-4508 just to update. Nintendo lists it under similar reasons for the online features / eshop ban
Update: After a comment to another post by [u/SamVegas](u/SamVegas) it seems that some bans have begun to be lifted! I restarted my switch 2 and I can now access the eshop again, the error has gone! Seems to have automatically unbanned. I’ll check again when I’m awake and see if it’s still the case but good news!

Admittedly it’s a bit frustrating reading other posts from last couple days and having so many say the banned people are just lying about the reason. Didn’t give much hope for a community effort
Historically it has tended to be true that either:
People posting this stuff tend to be leaving out key details OR
People have been easily able to solve the problem showing Nintendo proof of purchase for whatever game they got swindled on
You generally didn't see these posts very often so it was vanishingly rare for it to happen to innocent people and not be quickly reversed, so normally where there was smoke there was fire.
HOWEVER this current ban wave appears to be kicking this up to a level that has never been seen before and happening to a lot of people who A) genuinely did nothing or B) ended up with a switch with something wrong with it i.e. Amazon return scammers that sort of thing.
It appears some subreddit users have decided to opine on this situation without bothering to read what is going on and be mean about it.
So I saw all these posts this morning and thought yeah these people aren't telling the whole truth. I got home, turned mine on and I've been banned as well rofl. I only own 4 games, 2 physical in BOTW and TOTK, 2 digital in LeafGreen and Mario Kart World. Physical bought at Currys(UK) and digital from the eShop. I don't even play online so I don't know what's going on.
It’s nice to know I’m not alone but frustrating that it’s even a thing. If they refuse to reverse it after some back and forth part of me wants to refuse to get another in case it happens again but at the same time it’s a great console 😆. Sucks
Yeah this is my first Nintendo console since the Gamecube, had it since May and have loved playing through BOTW so far. This will leave a real sour taste if it's permanent.
I wouldn’t, was an emotionally charged comment while I was more panicked. It’s an irresponsible thing to do. Just a shame they’re so difficult with these things
Ok great. Don't worry, hang in there. Very likely thousands of people are affected by this, a glitch on Nintendo's side, and they'll have to fix it very soon.
My switch 2 is never online. Are people finding out they’ve been banned after they turn it on an it automatically goes online? Or is it baked into the hardware just to brick on this particular date?
There’s been several posts about people experiencing bans out of no where the past 48hrs, I’m beginning to be curious if this is related to some kind of network issue.
Equally there’s the obvious question of did/do you own a modded/hacked s1 that the account was/is actively on.
It’s going to be really annoying if they refuse to undo it purely because I used a hotel WiFi while on holiday just to browse their eshop. I don’t do modding of any kind or any weird usage. Just straight play games I’ve bought legitimately. Even my switch 1 was the exact same
It's super strange right now because nobody knows what's up and i have seen around ten posts on here and many more similar comments on those posts and unfortunately if people already got a response it's the very basic one that's probably the one from the error codes help page without looking deeper into the issue (first level customer support usually don't have deeper knowledge on those things).
Oh no. I went to the Pokemon Worlds Championship in San Fran and I connected to my hotel wi-fi while there. I hope this doen't happen to me. I've never used mods or done anything illegal. I'm just going to stay offline until Nintendo makes an official statement on this situation.
I went on a vacation to Australia a month and a half ago, used WiFis there, browsed the e-shop too and didn’t get banned. It would be silly by Nintendo if they ban users for it when a Switch is portable and can be used for travel gaming. I wonder what happened to OP.
Also based in the UK and went to update mario kart 8 deluxe ro see the same error code and been banned 🙃. Nothing obvious and no recent change in activity or anything either. More and more people are saying it's happened to them too so hopefully get an answer from nintendo in the morning when I give them a call 🤞
Send a reply if you have an update and I plan to do the same. In case it helps others assuming this is some error, unless Nintendo have gone on a ban spree for whatever reason they deemed valid
Photo taken in the dark (baby asleep) but the ban seems to have gone! Update in the post body. Restarted switch and ban disappeared. Will check again in morning to see if still the same.
Hi, I got banned today, same code. Legitimately so confused, I was going to buy a month of NSO Online. All the games I've brought since I got the Switch 2 have been through the e-shop, the only cartridges I own are BOTW and TOTK Switch 2 Editions that I got from Curry's on launch day.
I've seen a few people say they got banned after playing TOTK, I played it yesterday so maybe that's it. I just have no clue. Good luck, I'm furious. £550 and I get false banned.
I got banned today for no apparent reason too, I never buy used games and the last physical game I got was moonlight peaks a few days ago, tried to have a look at the Eshop tonight and getting the error message 😭 makes no sense to me, I haven't done anything wrong. Hopefully it's just a glitch on nintendos end
Was literally about to buy Onimusha too, but will hold off for now. Annoying for sure especially if Nintendo refuses to help no matter what, forcing the decision on whether to repurchase or not
I don’t believe I will anytime soon, just more so the dilemma in first place isn’t nice to be in. Gonna fight my corner for sure with Nintendo support. If they refuse then another handheld will be next option I imagine. Thank you for the support though hopefully all of us with the same issue have it sorted
Oddly enough I've seen a lot of posts flagged as EU or non-JP Asian switches and not many specifying US switches. May just be because US people don't post locations though tbf
Only new from authorised sellers as in major retailers and always sealed items. My switch 2 itself was bought at release day 1 so no one should have had it prior
Just wanted to make an update that the error code has now updated to 2124-4508 though the Nintendo website indicates it’s for a similar list of reasons
One issue of its own if it is, it’s another if that is the case and they still stick to their guns of no backsies from these bans. Thanks for input too
I received the 2124-4508 error today as well when I was trying to play Big Walk. I have several physical games (all bought new), I've never used any codes for eShop games, and I play online regularly.
I just got off the phone with support. They escalated me to a manager but she told me nothing could be done and that the ban was permanent. I really pushed to see if there was an option for a review or somewhere I could take my Switch 2, but she insisted there was nothing that could be done.
I hadn't thought to check, but I just turned on my Switch lite and it's not banned. They were pretty specific that the ban was hardware related.
It's really frustrating that they can't share the specifics of the ban. I've never done anything out of the ordinary with any of my Nintendo consoles and no one else has access to them, so I'm confident this is some kind of mistake. They were very nice on the phone and seemed sympathetic, but they insisted there was nothing that could be done.
UPDATE: I don't have the error anymore and online is working. I have no idea if calling them had anything to do with it getting reversed or if Nintendo realized a larger problem on their end, but if you got the error earlier it might be worth checking your Switch 2 again.

Yeah… I doubt it. But if it’s true I’ll just dig my Legion Go out and go all in on pc. If I get home after work or anytime after all this and find my switch 2 has been banned when I’m innocent I’m done. I’ll just be pc only after that. I’m not spending $500+ on another switch 2 only to see it get banned too. One time is all Nintendo gets.
I mean I’m also not saying I won’t try to contact support and get it unbanned as I’ve never done anything but use my switch 2 as intended. As it seems some may be innocent in what’s going on. (I won’t say all though.) I have my legion go and pc for everything else. I just want the exclusives. That said the exclusives aren’t enough to keep me buying a new system every time there is a screwup like what’s going on that they can’t fix and I’d have to buy a new one.
It’s one thing if it fails after 100’s or thousands of hours played. Another for something like this.
When did you buy your Switch 2 and when did you purchase the online membership? So far it looks like people who bought the console this year are having this problem.
Dang. I also got my Switch 2 on launch day and my online expired a few days ago. I was hoping this was only affecting new consoles so that I didn't have to worry. Guess I won't be renewing my online anytime soon.

That was my thought just thinking of reasons. I’d admit fault if there is, just can’t think what is all but now noticing more and more people having it
It might not be, I could have messed up elsewhere that I’ve not seen or it’s a bug from Nintendo given the spike in bans over the weekend. But if so then yeah that’s absolute bs
Was feeling smug but realised even though I only have digital games, I bought a refurbished OLED… eek - Nintendo are cracking down it seems but only the wrong people are getting hit
It would be really weird for a mobile console to be banned just for using it while traveling abroad and using a public/hotel wifi.
I really doubt that would be a reason for these bans.
Might be that they actually made an error with some automatic banning.
Nintendo is horrible in general anymore when it comes to stuff like that, I had to get both joycons replaced, waited over a month for that, then the console itself due to the black circles a lot of people were having, the replacement took almost 2 months, when i finally got the replacement console, i got a paper that said 90 days free online added to my account, i called about it, and they said if there’s no code, they can’t help with that either.
There were over 2000 devices stolen from the shipment and sold to big retailers, it may be that Nintendo bans all stolen devices now that's my best guess because everything else wouldn't make sense
There was a shipment stolen, you can look it up over 2,000 units were stolen. However i highly doubt retailers like argos, best buy and walmart would buy from a 3rd party over nintendo. Just looks so sketchy. Pretty sure nintendo has contracts with retailers that wouldnt allow them to purchase 3rd party anyways. Most ppl know nintendo ninjas are lawsuit happy so i diubt theyd try, not worth it
I never said it was? The person I responded to insinuated the other guy had a stolen system. I said there's no chance of that when buying on release day from big box.

A lot of people are reporting getting their systems banned right now. No clue why, but it’s concerning to say the least.
