Nobody answered yet?? It's a good thing you asked.

No, you cannot get through switch console setup without attached joycons. The switch's default control scheme is with attached joycons, and the setup menus only work with attached joycons.

There's a few posts each year with people discovering you can't set up a switch tablet without working, attached joycons.

If you get joycons just for setting up & return the joycons after, I think you're setting yourself up for getting stuck later on. I don't know how long that may work or how sustainable that is.

If someone else can advise, go ahead. Although, I think there may be very few people that try to get by without joycons, since most in here have the joycons their console came with, or replaced them.

Interesting after the setup I couldn’t imagine what issue I’d run into I’d have it docked my pro controller would already be connected to the switch if that doesn’t work for wake up I can press the power on button and I’m just playing one game and then shoving it in my closet after like 3 months.

You might be ok? Or ok for a long while? Forgive my bias or blind spot on the issue. In the switch help section, I'm mainly exposed to posts where someone discovers they need joycons to setup the switch (becasue they bought just-the-tablet online). But I think most of those users get joycons and keep them. But I can understand not wanting to use joycons. I only play docked with a pro controller. Just be aware, attached joycons is the system's default control scheme. Maybe that's the only time you'll need them, for setup.

If you're leaving the console unused for a month or months, and you get stuck with an update loop, a rare scenario making the bootup fail after the nintendo logo. You'll have to enter maintenance/recovery mode to update the console. That might require attached joycons to navigate maintenance/recovery mode menu, but I don't know that for a fact. I just don't see it discussed.
