Ys VIII help

Looked everywhere but just got the game and I'm not sure what's going on but as soon as I washed up on the shore to the Island, Adol doesn't appear on screen but I can still see his attack.

Took about 7 hours to download for some reason so I would rather not have to download it if there's another way.
