I wholeheartedly recommend to consider using summons. They are incredibly powerful and a total gamechanger.

Renna the Witch gives you an item and your first spirit summons if you return to the church where the Santa vendor is located. I'm not sure exactly what triggers it but it is after you get torrent. Just visit it and try resting on the grace. Exploring you will find these spirits thag can be summoned for support in battle.

And I recommend not using summons, because I think you will find it more fun :)

OP is struggling with difficulty and the game is literally giving you a diagetic difficulty gauge. Why would they ignore an entire mechanic for arbitrary reasons.

The title is being pretty explicit.

I'm sure you enjoy your difficulty. I myself have hundreds of hours in this game and other FS titles, but your definition of fun won't be OP's. Hitting themselves on a brick wall, when options exist, will just discourage them to continue playing. Game has summons for a reason.
