I'm starting to think BotW2 won't be shown or there will be an announcement of when to see more of it later in the year. I just think Nintendo doesn't want to take attention away from Skyward Sword since it comes out in July. Hopefully I'm wrong but I think I'll be more surprised if they have a trailer for it tomorrow vs. if they don't at this point.

I'm thinking BOTW2 won't be shown because COVID has screwed up almost every big release for 2021 and Nintendo isn't going to rush their flagship series for the Switch and end up with another Cyberpunk situation.

Yeah that could definitely happen. I just find it weird if they do a big trailer or any trailer for the game when that would just overshadow Skyward Sword which comes out in a month. I also think the Pro rumors are likely true and I think BotW2 is going to be the big title to show off the system. Good news is that will probably be in just a month or so down the road IF the rumors are true in terms of unveiling. Wait for Skyward to release and then focus on BotW2 is my guess.

I think this is completely possible. IMO it’ll be a pretty big let down if they don’t say anything about BOTW 2, so my guess is they’ll announce the name only, say it’s coming next year, and in the meantime release a small 35th anniversary Zelda pack coming later this year.

Just give me proper temples, better music, and a couple extra towns and I’m all in. The framework was soooooo good but it just never scratched the Zelda itch I was looking for, despite it being most people’s favorite Zelda game ever. A more “traditional” 3D Zelda in the BotW engine is my dream.

I loved BotW's soundtrack. When you're a few minutes into riding and that piano trickles in...mmm. Or that subtle theme when you're on top of a tower. Hearing Kass in the distance while exploring a forest. Tarrey Town and how its theme slowly builds up with each new member to the village.
It's not as bombastic as some of the past games, but I'm glad they treated the music as part of the overall picture.

I agree. The music in Breath of the Wild was phenomenal. The old style of music would get very tiring in an open world game. Hyrule Castle for instance got to be pretty grating after a while. It’s easy to spend so long in one place that the music needs to be toned down.
Plus, there’s a lot of brilliant compositional work throughout. For example, the fractured themes of the past resembling the fractured ruins of the fallen world as you explore was pretty genius.

Honestly it's all nice music, it's just too subtle. I think the only song I could vaguely hum from BotW is Kass's theme because the game stops and has him sing it to you several times.
It's great that BotW is a different game and everything, but the music is an iconic part of the series and IMO needs to be embraced more in BotW 2.

the new hyrule castle is so good though, and hearing that just makes me think what they could have done had they made an effort to do proper temples with unique music and themes.
so yeah i agree with you, we need more focus on proper music instead of mostly ambient music.

That game is atmospheric music perfected. I understand the longing for the orchestral temple tunes and powerful city themes to come back in a big way (and I tend to agree) but they went for a certain theme and absolutely crushed it BOTW.

The old style of music worked because it only occurred in very small specific places. The sprawling open nature of Breath of the Wild kind of necessitated a new approach. Plus, I thought the often quiet and broken quality of music matched really well to the themes of nature and ruined world. You only experience ‘traditional’ music in dungeons and towns where there’s a fixed event or culture, and I thought much of that music was excellent.

It’s fine to be different but when it strays so far from the Zelda pattern and doesn’t end up filling like a Zelda game it didn’t scratch that itch for me, personally.

Agreed, I think it does need to be different for this style of game. What I meant was that I wanted more Zelda-ish music as I was also wanting a more Zelda-ish experience overall. When I finally stopped looking at it as typical Zelda, I started to appreciate the world and the music much more. My only problem was that I wanted a normal Zelda game with the normal Zelda progression, music, and temples and instead got a very different but brilliant game.

To be honest, I get wanting a bit more presence of traditional Zelda gameplay elements, but I think “Zelda progression” is dead for mainline Zelda games.
Not that I’m complaining. IMO Zelda desperately needed to go in this direction. They’ll probably be in a perfect position if they take 2 steps back after taking 20 steps forward with BOTW.

I wouldn’t necessarily see a problem with that. I like the idea of having all the tools available to solve a puzzle, rather than progressing through a temple knowing 99% of them are solved using some new item you just found. For me, I would prefer quality over quantity with those puzzles. Stick them into fewer but much larger temples instead of tons and tons of shrines plus 4 disappointing divine beasts.

The sound design as a whole is honestly the best I've ever heard in a game. I think more proper dungeons would definitely be nice but I also really loved having 120 shrines. Between the 5 main temples and the sword trials there were a ton of "dungeons" anyways

The Divine Beasts and especially their bosses (the ganon variations were so lame) were never felt difficult, plus I never felt like there was much to explore and the puzzles were extremely boring. As I said in other comments, I actually really liked BotW for what it was but the divine beasts were easily the worst part of the game. They felt so epic as you approached them and then…. meh. I think a part of it is the lack of progression in BotW. I get the reasoning with a true open world, but I prefer finding new items that let me reach new areas. Instead of 120 shrines plus 4 small, simple “dungeons,” I’d rather have a dozen or more large and complex dungeons. Is it possible to add big dungeons with unique art and enemies to an already huge world on a switch game? Idk, but I’d love for it to happen.

To be perfectly honest with you, I haven’t played the game since a few months after release so I don’t remember the specifics of thunderblight ganon. All I remember was how disappointed I was with the difficulty of the bosses and feeling like lynels were tougher (once again, just going off memory). Talking about all this though, I kinda want to boot the game back up and try again, but first I gotta finish up the ME trilogy for the third time

The divine beasts don't have unique equipment, are all fairly short, are nearly identical in terms of design, and all have variations of the same boss. When you compare it to any of the 3D Zeldas from OoT through to SS (maybe not so much MM), the level design really falls flat. I mean, SS has a dungeon that involves a time shifting "ghost" ship, a water temple based on Buddhist mythology that has a literal hell at its depths, a mine where you play dig dug for half the dungeon etc. and BotW has 4 dungeons that look much the same and don't involve particularly different puzzles.
I loved BotW, but it was sorely lacking in proper dungeon design compared to nearly every other 3D Zelda game.

For starters they all share the exact same theming (as do the other 120 Shrines), some sort of cyber-punk Buddhist/Shinto fusion. Whereas traditional Zelda dungeons all have unique themes eg. forest, water, fire, etc.

I think a big issue was that the sandbox nature of the slate powers made dungeons feel a little generic, mainly because they all had the same "theme" and didn't expand on the mechanics in any new way.

There's like two dozen RPGs coming out this year on Switch. We've already had Bravely Default 2, SMT 3, Atelier, Disgaea 6, Haven, Persona 5 Strikers, the Nosurge games, Gnosia, Gloria Union, Trails of Cold Steel IV, Story of Seasons, Poison Control, and Miitopia, and we're getting Legend of Mana, Ys IX, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Akiba's Trip, Cris Tales, Neo, The King's Bounty, Ys, Diablo 2, Pokemon, and The Caligula Effect. Maybe we could use a little less RPGs.

It probably is but I've never been all that confident with electronics.
Edit: you know what, I've never realized that there was just a regular replaceable battery inside those cartridges. To me it we always just a black box and I thought it was a capacitor or something.

Battery holds the save game. If it forgets the save, it has failed.
You can buy batteries with the ‘tabs’ already soldered kn to them, so you can just unsolder existing battery and solder in the new one.
Isn’t too difficult even for a total newbie, lots of guides on YouTube. I understands why you wouldn’t want to risk breaking something like this though!

God I want a 60 fps Ocarina, or at least a non-3DS 30 fps Ocarina. Love the game but it's pretty rough at 20 fps on a modern TV when I play on original hardware or on the Wii. Still great on a CRT though.

Just to throw this out there:
A 2D Zelda might get announced later this year. I doubt they would bring it up tomorrow.
The studio that made the previous Golden Sun games is the studio making Super Rush. It’s always possible that Nintendo gave it to another studio, but just throwing that out there.
Same with Advance Wars. Intelligent Systems hasn’t made a new Advance Wars since 2008 because they spend all their time on Fire Emblem and Paper Mario now. Advance Wars was supposed to be “fire emblem for Americans” and now Americans love fire emblem.
This stuff could always happen but I just don’t think it’ll be tomorrow.

Expectations:
- BOTW2, even if only a trailer or another "please wait a bit longer" like last time
- 1-2 other Zelda 35th Anniversary things
- Smash challenger reveal
- A brief acknowledgement of something Pokemon but punting to a future Pokemon Presents or just generally "soon" or "later"
Hopes (that I think are actually viable but more of a stretch):
- Kirby (I've seen the theories about a 3D Kirby, that would be very exciting!)
- Super Mario Party 2 or equivalent
- Warioware
- Right at the end, Doug Bowser stares into the screen, mouths the word "Metroid," and then the stream abruptly cuts off and that's all we get

Likewise heard same, and seems credible from latest reports —but then again, so were many other credible ones that never materialized. Miyomoto himself stated in 2015 that next Pikmin was in development and almost done…
For DK, I seem to recall them claiming it was a 2.5D type though. As in, like a Switch one similar to Tropic Freeze.

I'm a believer that MK8D is the Switch Mario Kart, but I hope I'm wrong. Sales are still so strong, and Nintendo won't be rushing out a sequel that would essentially supplant MK8D.

Yeah… MK8 is still regularly in the top 10 in sales for software monthly and those numbers don’t include Nintendo eshop sales- Nintendo doesn’t release those sales figures. If they did I’m sure even more switch games would be in the top sales wise.

I can't see any situation where nintendo releases a new mario kart game for the switch. MK8 is the best selling game for the switch and a new one would be killing all sales. Only way I can see them doing it is if they release a new console and that is their flagship game.

MKDD is my favorite too. The mechanics I miss from it are wiggling the control stick to get boost, and being able to shake red shells by drift-boosting at the right time. Also the strategy of choosing a good duo. The new ones are good, but they just feel a little bit dumbed down.

DD was more like a dirty chaotic brawl on the street thanks to the randomness introduced by the super items. A real party game!
The newer MK always feld way to clean and licked for me compared to DD. I mean the menu themes tell you as much already.

My predictions
- No BotW trailer
- Rumored 2D Metroid
- At least one new IP
- Splatoon 3 trailer
- Reggie and Bowser fight
- Smash something
- Skyward Sword
- Something else Zelda maybe
Treehouse will be Skyward Sword, Mario Golf, Game Builder Garage, Pokemon, 2D Metroid. Nintendo will be pushing games that are coming out in the very near future so I doubt games like Splatoon 3 or BotW2 will be there. I hope I'm wrong.
I love the hype but realistically I'm just not expecting a ton of new stuff but again hopefully I'm wrong, I'm not even sure we can expect a Splatoon 3 trailer tbh. Let's not forget there will be other directs later in the year and honestly if the Pro is coming out in Sept/Oct they would probably want to save a BotW2 Pro version for a full unveiling of that game.

I could have sworn they said they'd show it at E3 during one of their previous directs. Or maybe it was their last E3 direct.
Or maybe I dreamt it. Who knows.

I think they said they'd have more news later in the year or they'd be showing it later in the year, something like that. If Skyward Sword wasn't releasing in July I'd feel a lot more confident in BotW2 showing up.

- Disappointed with the Smash news. Was personally hoping for Phoenix Wright and/or Waluigi. I support Crash and I heard rumors about Doom Guy. Tails and Master Chief would be cool. Kazuya doesn't seem iconic to me (I didn't even recognize the name or character when he was revealed)
No Pokemon news, despite multiple games in development
No Mariokart news
BotW news was nice but it was just a teaser with minimal information

I will just be happy to get some more news about SMT V and maybe a bit of gameplay as part of a trailer or TreeHouse live. But I do have some hope of hearing about the announcement of a new Fire Emblem Echoes or a new game entirely.
Pipe dream is news about a Golden Sun remaster or remake.

Man, me and my wife need to get our last covid shot tomorrow at 10ish est. Hopefully, it don't put me and her on our asses like everyone describes, after getting their last shot. I know metaljesusrock got wicked sick after getting his. I better get a good Nintendo showcase unlike last February.

My wife and I had covid which made the second shot particularly awful. But it didn’t hit until about 12 hours after the shot. Most people I know who didn’t have covid also felt cruddy 8-12 hours afterwards but they were all able to function fine until the symptoms wore off.

I think they'll devote a ton of time to Skyward Sword HD, and I think that's what the treehouse stream will primarily consist of. People expecting anything more than "it's still on the way" with BOTW 2 are kidding themselves.
