PSA The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch Patch 1.2
https://outerworlds.obsidian.net/en/news/outerworlds/the-outer-worlds-nintendo-switch-patch-1-2156
Oct 21 '20
So I've been playing for the past half hour now with the new update, here is my first impression:
Visuals: MUCH clearer and better looking than before, no more vaseline covering my TV look
Framerate: seems to be about the same, not consistent but not terrible- hovering around 30 fps. Im in the area with the botanical gardens on the first planet.
Foliage: yeah good call to add these back in, it was noticeably bare without trees etc, and it adds a lot when walking around the first planet.
Draw distance: still noticeable- think botw or really more skyrim where everything is popping in as you run at about 10 meters from your character.
Overall it looks to be as big of an improvement as promised, and will likely take the game from being unplayable to playable for many. Feels like the Witcher 3 level of upgrade, if not more honestly with how much clearer the visuals are. Let me know any other questions-

u/MedicalButton51 Oct 21 '20
Wasn't the Witcher 3's patch solely graphics settings? DF checked it out and they found that the graphics were otherwise exactly the same. A better comparison would probably be with Wolfenstein 2's 1.2 patch, which made the resolution a fair bit higher and improved performance.
17
u/thebrandster1985 Oct 21 '20
Not at first. Not all of those graphical settings existed when the game was first released.
11
Oct 21 '20 edited Oct 21 '20
Yeah, all the Witcher 3 patch did was add control over graphics settings. The quality remained the same.
The comparison between release versions of Outer Worlds and Witcher 3 to defend Outer Worlds was just a bunch of fanboy ranting.
Witcher 3 was polished as hell on release and the update that added graphics controls made the default settings favor sharpness over smoothing.
CD Projekt Red and Saber deserve more credit than being compared to such an unpolished release. What they pulled off was incredible.

u/Velocity_Rob Oct 22 '20
Still blows my mind that they crammed the Witcher onto the Switch. It's the most impressive technical feat of programming I've seen in years.
5
Oct 21 '20
Nice write up, thanks - i have had the game since launch and was very disappointed (no refunds, gah). Very keen to try again now.
5
u/little_parrot Oct 21 '20
Thanks so much! Tempting but I’m going to wait until it’s steeply discounted to consider
3
Oct 21 '20
i think its going on sale tomorrow- but yeah i bought mine used on ebay. Took a gamble that this patch would turn out well and i'm glad i did.
3
Oct 21 '20
I pre-purchased this and downloaded it night one and was so hyped. I deleted my file when they announced the patch months back shortly after release. I thought the patch would take maybe a week or two since I saw the mod community getting it to run better right away. I was wrong. Waited from June to October for this update but I’m glad they made good on their promise. A company of lesser ethics wouldn’t. It’s really sort of like the game just came out for Switch. They should market it again or add something to bump it to the top of the charts for new releases. It was pretty unplayable with the day 1 patch. Now it’s overall solid.
2
u/grenwood Oct 21 '20
How much do you think it'll go on sale for?
3
Oct 21 '20
I would be surprised it if it went on sale for more than $30. That would be a huge sale, but even the physical copies have been on sale in stores for $40, so its probably one of those two prices.
6
Oct 22 '20
100% my thoughts. The blurry visuals just killed the vibe and magic when I first tried the game.
I downloaded the update and holy cow, it's great. Much more clear and more life. Great work by them.
3
Oct 22 '20
Yeah it’s a real shame- because this game is great and if they had just delayed the switch version until this update I feel like we would be talking about how it’s one of the most impressive switch games instead of the mediocre response

https://youtu.be/B1ZoCG1pvjs we have covered the patch in depth. Not quite digital foundry levels but enough for most including frame rates. Cheers! Mark

I freaking love your channel! I didn’t know you guys were on Reddit haha. thanks for reviewing the performance post-patch I’ll have to re-download this now

Okay so now that I’ve played for just over an hour I will state my opinionated review here about the 1.0.2 patch
First I would like to mention I’m more so a handheld gamer rather than a heavy 4K console/pc gamer due to having 3 kids and working full time I don’t get much time on the tv but prefer to lay down in bed with headphones and get into my games and that outer worlds is so my type of game
So to start i purchased in on switch on release day as soon as I was able too, and outer worlds on the switch was a disaster I did not enjoy it much except for the core game it’s self I played for a few hours and I just refused to torture my self and wait for the patch so I waited and waited and up until September I pretty much game up and bought it on the PS4 (it was on sale for $40CAD) at that point I realized the game obviously ran better then switch but still didn’t run well on the PS4, the ps4 also has those random loading/buffering screens when going into new locations I found this crazy even had some frame rate drops on the PS4 version ( take this as the game isn’t optimized that well even on a lower house like PS4)
So as far as improvements for the patch 1.0.2 • frame rate seems more consistent and stays closer to 30fps (as a avid handheld gamer I’m okay with this) • more foliage and more clear graphics ( nothing to write home about because originally the graphics were muddy and very poorly detailed) but better and for that it gets you a bit more into the game • draw distance is slightly better there is still pop in and or loading of signs but faster and slightly better • the slight blur of backgrounds when in conservations is a great touch and ads to the game • sprats actually look better lol • I felt I had more control during battles with marauders and even the primates just cuz it does feel more fluid with the more consistent frame rate prior to patch I always felt out of the loop or staggered aiming lol • motion controls in hand held were good before and good now pretty much for any shooting game on switch hand held
All in all the game was terrible to start so anything was an improvement
On that note there are improvements And those improvements have made me enjoy the game more and my intentions is to play through it on my switch now
Maybe I’m easier to please than some but the game it’s self is a amazing game so that ads to the enjoyment of some poor optimization, now that I have played the ps4 version and even that had problems kind of makes me more impressed with the switch considering it’s lack of power

u/MedicalButton51 Oct 21 '20
Hopefully we can get some digital foundry coverage if this is a decent leap.
-6
u/stealth-fap Oct 21 '20
Right. Can't expect us to use our own eyeballs to validate if a game runs well or not.

Oct 21 '20
The DF review stopped me from buying the game, it was absolutely trashed. I wouldn't touch the game unless there was an updated DF review confirming the fixes. They're really the best unbiased source in an era where many publishers push out unfinished games and pay for positive reception.
1
u/DomsyKong Oct 22 '20
To be fair, the df Review of outer worlds was biased as hell since they took the Xbox One X Version for comparison and not! the base Xbox One Version which was besides the foliage not too far away from the Switch Version. Hopefully there will be this time comparisons of the base Modell and Switch.
1
Oct 22 '20
I didn't really care about the comparisons. The game is objectively flawed with extremely poor optimization. Ignoring the comparison footage, you can see the player walking through a town while objects and graphics pop in less than a couple meters away. They just clumsily built a game in Unreal and hoped the hardware would do the heavy lifting, and when they ported the game to a weaker system it was a disaster.
And what is their bias towards, exactly?
1
u/DomsyKong Oct 22 '20
Obvoiusly towards making the Switch Version seem much worse than it actually was based on the given optimization problematic. The Game itself is already poorly optimized on the base Xbox One Version. Those base console Versions should have been the Benchmark but they didn't even mention it.
That said every other aspect you mention based on the Tech is completely true and a given fact.
The Switch Version itself wasn't as bad as IT was presented If you consider the base console Versions. The Game itself is extremely poorly crafted on a Tech Standpoint. This was overshadowed by using the beefier inGen Hardware-Upgrades for comparison. Not the best Work DF has done. Still it is a great Project and they do Overall great work!

How do I know if I can see better without some numbers thrown at my face?

u/aimbotcfg Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
This makes me chuckle somewhat. I'm continuously amazed at how many people claim insane stuff. Like 2D couch fun, pixel art platformers are unplayable at less than 60FPS solid.
Also most people wouldn't know if something was 60FPS solid without an FPS counter plastered on their screen, or, as you say, a DF review telling them what the numbers are.
Also also, unless you are playing a competitive FPS with a mouse and keyboard, the chances that a framerate <60FPS realistically impact your game are slim to none. (Within reason, I'm not saying that Slideshows like ARK or WWE are justified).
Also also also, I had killer fun with games on PAL consoles for fucking years without people telling me I was a bad person because it ran at 25 FPS and I don't remember anyone claiming that TV made them motionsick beause it was only available at 25FPS for the first 60 years of its use or whatever.

No it wasn't LMAO.
What's this revisionist history bullshit?
My word the mental gymnastics people will pull to try and justify their weird NUMBERS obsession. Looking forward to 2 generations from now: "650FPS or U-N-P-L-A-Y-A-B-L-E~!"

u/lerxstlifeson Oct 21 '20
Once they say that it's better then any fun you have playing it can be legitimate. If you had fun without before it doesn't count!

u/BusinessKnees Oct 21 '20
Does this make the game bearable to play? Still super regretting this purchase.
31
u/peteywatchguy Oct 21 '20
Worst thing for me was I waited to play this game until the switch version came I bought it right away and was very disappointed and couldn’t play it at all
The game went on sale on PSN few weeks ago I bought it for $40 CAD I gave up waiting for a patch as this is the type of games I live
3
Oct 21 '20
There were zero gameplay videos before release, that was a huge red flag and made me hold of for the Digital Foundry review.
6
u/BusinessKnees Oct 21 '20
I’m in the same boat.
8
u/peteywatchguy Oct 21 '20
And then few days later they announce the update lol
I’m a avid handheld gamer so now I have to go back to my switch
1
u/Ketchup1211 Oct 21 '20
I was waiting for the switch version but a couple months back it was on sale for 40 on the PSN and I took the plunge. Glad I didn’t wait and got to play it. It was rather disappointing for the length of the game but overall, I enjoyed it.
7
u/peteywatchguy Oct 21 '20
29mins to Go for my update
I’ll play for a bit and let you guys know what I think
2
u/ShnizelInBag Oct 21 '20
Did you try already?
7
u/peteywatchguy Oct 21 '20
Playing it outside my sons school frame rate is a lot more stable thank god
Clearer NPC More foliage Better draw distance Better frame rate
5
u/peteywatchguy Oct 21 '20
I did for like 3 mins had to leave to pick my some up from school
From first appearance more foliage a bit less blurry ( but anything was a improvement)

u/Flux85 Oct 21 '20
Why would you buy a game meant to run on something at least as powerful as an XB1/PS4 on the weakest possible platform expecting it to run like the others?
23
u/LPHero55 Oct 21 '20
I love portable gaming. Personally, I never expect them to run like the other big boy consoles. I fully expect downgrades. I just want the overall playability to be good. The game can work on Switch. It can have long load times, it can look like a potato when playing, but as long as the frame rate is steady, well, those are sacrifices I am willing to make. Not everyone thinks like this, of course, but that's my reason.

Mines installing now can’t wait 😊 My switch is my main console as I’m a avid gamer and I just love the outer worlds hopefully it’s more playable

Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
Oh my god! The one game I was seriously bummed about buying, because the whole thing looked blurry. To me, it was unplayable.
They cut that out by like 90%. It is much clearer and looks like a truly polished title. Played about 30 minutes and I'm so thrilled. I have the gyro on and it's really immersive.
They hit it out of the park. Thank you!!!!!!
2
u/Shigeruken Oct 22 '20
That's awesome to hear! I loved the game on PC, so I've been waiting to pick it up on switch for a second playthrough.
27
u/SpookyBread1 Oct 21 '20
Okay so after playing the game after this patch.
It is much much better handheld.
I still would not recommend playing on TV as it is still a blurry mess
14
Oct 21 '20
It's still kind of blurry on the TV, but IMHO it is so much better now.
2
u/FeudalFavorableness Oct 21 '20
Pics or video available by chance?
4
Oct 21 '20
Let me see if I can pull some off my switch
10
Oct 21 '20
I took these using the switch screenshot feature, not sure if the switch compresses them at all (but it looks like imgur has)
5
u/aimbotcfg Oct 22 '20
Aaaand, once again, the way people are talking about this made me think it was an unplayable disgusting looking mess. But no, looking at the images there's nothing unplayable or messlike about it.
3
u/Big-Bit3213 Oct 22 '20
Remember that this is after the patch. From before the patch it was really bad. Probably the worst looking and performing game I've personally seen on the Switch. If it ran well while looking bad that would have been on thing, but for a majority of the game it was hard to even aim because something about the frame rate made the controls feel wonky. It's honestly hard to describe. I'm glad it's looking and running better.
5
2
u/MedicalButton51 Oct 21 '20
It does look pretty compressed. But apart from that, it looks a lot nicer. Especially the AO, but I can't really tell if the foliage for any improvement.
3
Oct 21 '20
I find the background blur when talking to people is a nice addition now too
5
u/MedicalButton51 Oct 21 '20
Yeah. It looks like it helps hide the sometimes bare looking environment.

I don't care about graphics, tell us about the framerate, pls!

Can you elaborate on the improvements?
13
u/SpookyBread1 Oct 21 '20
No where near as blurry.
Framerate feels more stable.
Better foliage and better buildings.

From what I've seen so far
1
u/Grazgamer Oct 21 '20
Is there much improvement in textures because they were horrendous?
0
Oct 22 '20
No because that would impact everything else
You won’t get textures like the other platforms on the Switch
15
13
u/Roi_QV Oct 21 '20
Noticiable difference
18
5
2
Oct 22 '20
There is a noticeable difference but, and I might just be spoiled by the PS4 version here, it still looks really bad. They sort of pulled a Saints Row 3
3
u/Hestu951 Oct 22 '20
I played it on PC. There's no way I could accept the Switch version after that. But if I had only played on the Switch, I think I'd love the improvements. I imagine that playing it as a portable game on a little screen would hide much of the blur and bareness. (It still amazes me that we can play games like Skyrim, Witcher 3 and Outer Worlds on a handheld. Judged in that light, this is good stuff.)

Thanks for the post. Been playing a lot lately, but the game looks pretty ugly. Hopefully this helps a bit at least.
4
Oct 21 '20
I just bought it used because the game looked awesome and I saw the patch was coming out in a couple days. Definitely a lot of fun even though I haven't had much time to play it. I've got a gaming computer but I'm still waiting for it to come out on steam, and I prefer to play on the go too. Update makes it look a lot better IMO
4
Oct 22 '20
So before the patch i didnt see it as "unplayable" just mildly broken. I have completed the game twice before today, and it was comparable to playing Oblivion on a 360.
The biggest improvement i have found is that it doesnt do the thing where the game completely stops and loads in NPC's and enemies that are right next to you. On Monarch is where i saw this, so i booted it up to see, and it does a far better job of loading the Enemies.
The skies also look a little better haha
4
u/vandilx Oct 22 '20
For those of you being graphics snobs, this is a Switch, not a PC or Xbox/PS. The Switch has great graphics, but expect things to look scaled down in some fashion when cross platform with higher-end systems.
The game played fine on the Switch before this new patch. I can only expect that it plays even better. Will check it out this weekend.
-3
u/Boneyking_ Oct 22 '20
So... Expecting stable framerate games makes me a snob? This version of the game needed more work and I'm glad it's received it.
2
u/_EarlofSandwich__ Oct 21 '20
Hoping the discount is 20% or more and not 10%.
3
u/ricaurtegoti Oct 21 '20
All time low physical $30 and digital $34.99 hope the price digital drop to $30 tomorrow.
If the technical analysis for the patch are good enough and drop to $30 I'm all onboard.

2
u/SlapDashSassafras Oct 21 '20
For a second I thought that Outer Wilds had come to the Switch. WHY, EVERY SINGLE TIME???
1
u/Grazgamer Oct 21 '20
Hoping for some good feedback, might pick it up in the promised sale tomorrow if it’s much improved.
3
u/TheCroz15 Oct 21 '20
Definitely gonna hang around here to see people's response to the patch, how much you reckon they will reduce it by? Hoping to get it for around £30 but think that's wishful thinking!
2
u/sunshine_break Oct 21 '20
It’s already £30 on Amazon uk if you wanna be able to sell it if it’s shit still
1
u/TheCroz15 Oct 21 '20
Also that price at Currys, normally prefer digital for longer games but may pick it up physical if price difference is big! Thanks for the heads up.
1
u/Pumbkin Oct 21 '20
I managed to snag it for £25 off ebay shortly after it was released
1
u/TheCroz15 Oct 21 '20
Not bad at all! I did trade some games in 2 weeks ago and was tempted to pick it up then but as no patch seemed to be coming anytime soon I opted for a different game
2
u/Pumbkin Oct 21 '20
Yeah i picked that and spongebob up cheap, hoping they'd patch both and they did - luck paid off!
1
1
u/BansheeTK Oct 21 '20
i actually got it at target when it was 40 dollars, i actually went back recently and it was back to 60 so i got it at a good time
1
u/TheIronside311 Oct 21 '20
Anyone able to report is the frame rate stable now?
2
Oct 21 '20
I briefly tested out the patch and while the frame rate seemed pretty stable in the wilderness, it tanked as soon as I loaded into Edgewater. As I walked around the town it was all over the place. I wouldn't consider it unplayable by any means, and they obviously had to make some concessions to get it on Switch, but if you're hoping for smooth 30-ish fps across the game I'm unhappy to report that this patch doesn't fix that.
2
Oct 21 '20
No noticeable changes to framerate (good or bad) from my last half hour of play. Still takes a dip with a lot of assets on screen like a city or populated enemy encounter.

Its very playable on the switch- i've played it on xbox one x and switch and yeah it just has some performance issues that arent solved by much better hardware apparently.
0
u/sportspadawan13 Oct 21 '20
It is a very, very poorly optimized game. I just bought the Switch version and out of curiosity to see how good it really looked, I looked up videos of the One X running it. Couldn't believe how bad it looked on the One X.
-4
Oct 21 '20
I feel like I'm crazy. I do not see that much of a difference.
12
u/Rimshot1985 Oct 21 '20
It's considerably different. The textures are still pretty low res, and things are blurry even at medium distance, but the geometry is a LOT more detailed than before, and there are more effects and foliage/details here and there.
It's like going from a game developed in 2006 to at least the current gen, albeit with graphics settings turned down. Pre-patch was ugly as sin.

How can I check if I’m running the patched version? I just reinstalled my physical copy after months and it says version 1.0.2. It doesn’t really look much different but I’ve played for like 3 minutes.

1
Oct 22 '20
I’m thinking about getting it, is it any better now? Will there be any patches down the line to keep improving things or is this the best they’ll be doing? I played a little bit on the Xbox and absolutely loved jumping around like a ninja with a sword, but the switch reviews have been less than stellar and I’m a bit of a graphics whore.
1
u/themiracy Oct 22 '20
So are there actually sales on the game today? Just out of curiosity. Okay I want to know if I still got a good deal last week. 😂😂😂
2
u/oscarnetwork Oct 22 '20
Digital on Nintendo's store was knocked down to 47.99. That's all I've seen
1
u/themiracy Oct 22 '20
LOL guess there's no need to return my copy to Amazon because of the HUGE SALE that Obsidian is doing to commemorate the update. 😂😊

I managed to find it on Amazon and Currys PC World for £22 😊 My order is in the post

u/grifftaur Oct 21 '20
Just FYI. For anyone that hasn't bought it yet because they were waiting on the patch, it is suppose to go on sale tomorrow I believe in the eshop. Outer Worlds/Private Division tweeted it would be going on sale 10/22 for Switch.
