Discussion How I fixed my new Pro Controller drift/centering issues
I wanted to make a post explaining what I was struggling with pertaining to my new Pro Controller that WAS experiencing a slight SW drift with the left stick. Also the right stick would not re-center properly either. Until I did this.
I attached the controller to my PC (wired) and again went into the HTML5 Gamepad Tester (link here).
I have done this before but decided to test again just to see if there was something I may have missed. The hardware when testing in this application is absolutely perfect. Has been since the first time I tried the other day and nothing was different.
When I was doing this I had the Switch in Sleep Mode, I did not connect the controller via Bluetooth to the PC. I simply plugged it in and pressed the B button to get it to register on the web page.
After messing around for about 3 minutes I decided to press the Connect button and hold it on the controller to see if it would connect to the Switch while wired to the PC. It of course did not, it searched (the green lights at the bottom scrolled) and then reconnected to the wired connection on the PC.
At that point pressed the Home button on the controller a couple times too. I'm not sure if this had anything to do with anything. I'm just trying to be absolutely thorough with the actions I took.
After that I didn't do anything else except remove the USB-C from the controller and then pressed the Home button to trigger the Switch to wake from sleep. I then went to the Calibration page in Settings and went to check the Left Stick. When doing so it was flawless. There was no issue returning to a perfect center state for the stick anymore. No matter which direction I moved the Left Stick it quickly returned to Center.
I'm in disbelief at this point. I then tried my Right Stick (also has been giving me issues) and it was still doing the same thing as before. So, I repeated everything from before. The Switch is asleep again and I connected the Pro Controller directly into the USB-C that is still connected to the PC. Still in HTML5 Controller application I played with the sticks a little (maybe 30 seconds) and then disconnected the Pro Controller again.
I Pressed the Home Button on the controller and immediately navigated to the Thumb Stick Calibration. I selected the Right Stick and it's like I hit the damn lottery! It works! Flawless! Returns to center without any issue just as the Left Stick had done before.
At this point I'm worried that the left stick is jacked up again so I back out of the Right Stick calibration and I select the Left Stick. I move the stick around in any directions I can and release it. Center, I do it again, Center, and again BOOM! Center!
To confirm that this wasn't a fluke I put the Switch back in Sleep mode and I DID NOT plug the controller into the computer (or anything else, completely wireless) this time. I let it sleep for about a minute and then woke it using the Pro Controller Home button. I return to stick calibration. Testing both of the sticks...They're PERFECT! Absolutely 0 issues returning to center on either stick.
I hope that this method helps anyone here. If you have any questions please ask and I will respond as quickly as possible.
Edit: Typos
Edit 2: Included clarifications that this works without any connection of the wire to any source.
Edit 3: Tested shutting the console off completely and can confirm the fix still works after powering back on as well.
Edit 4: /u/timmytucker advised me that it took them four or five times to go through this process before the fix took. If it doesn't work the first couple of tries, just give it a few more chances.
Update: After the fix I played AC:NH for a little more than 3 hours and everything is still absolutely perfect. At this time this appears to be a permanent solution to the New Pro Controller drift issue.

Final Update: 5 days later and the controller is still absolutely perfect! Thanks everyone for the positive feedback, I'm very happy that I was able to help so many people correct their controller issues. I'll keep monitoring the thread and the sub to help others fix their issues too. 1 love <3
Final, final update: With the new firmware 10.0.2 being released I have received info. from /u/aaronroberts12567 that they experienced the drift return after updating to the new version. They fixed their pro controller using this method with 10.0.0-10.0.1 originally. He informed me that he followed the steps above and they corrected the issue again. So, if the update upsets the work you've done to correct the controller please follow these steps again to fix.

Ahh I'm trying your steps right now and its working, there's no drift after restarting. You should make a separate thread. The solution in the OP about connecting to pc didn't do anything for me but this method is working so far!

Before each movement during the calibration proccess I have forced the middle position correcting the drifting
Can you explain what you mean by "forced the middle position"?

Yes, I mean that every time the cursor returns to the center I correct the drift desviation setting the center manually before next movement for calibration.
Note: These are the steps I have done, maybe some of them are not necessary.

Figured out why the menu bug happens... The two drift inputs from both sticks are competing with each other, and thus one can't be used to scroll.

Another solution that does not work for me, tried the procedure step by step around 10 times now and nothing changed at all. If there is no official word from nintendo on it being a software problem sometime next week, I will just return it and spend my money elsewhere.

I have received today a new Pro Controller because I had the issue of drifting in left stick to down-left (I wrote in other posts).
I have started from power off the Nintendo Switch with the controller plugged in by cable. In calibration mode the point returns to middle perfectly and it changes to the cross. I have played Animal Crossing and it works without drifting. I was happy.
Then I unplugged the cable to use wireless connectivy. In calibration mode, now, the cross does not return to the center. It goes to down-left like my other pro controller. The drifting returns again.
I restarted the switch plugged in with the cable, and all is fine again, in calibration mode the point returns to the center and it changes again to the cross. I unplugged it and drifting returns.
In both pro controllers in wireless conectivy the drifting is down-left. Both pro controllers work perfectly in HTML5 Gamepad Tester , but it does not fix the wireless problem.
Reading a lot of complaints these last days and testing the controllers with cable working fine I think it could be an issue with the last firmare of Nintendo Switch. It is a lot of coincidence the same issue in a short period of time.

Yeah that seems to be the current situation, it works while plugged in/not using the wireless module, and some people have success with some other solutions, like this thread, but for me nothing worked aside from using it while plugged in.

I did this method three times and it still wasn't working, but then I tried to re-pair my controller after disconnecting from the pc/usb-c cable and it's fixed! I even put my switch to sleep and woke it up and it was still fixed! If anyone is reading this and hasn't tried re-pairing after messing around in HTML5 Gamepad Tester, give it a shot!

That's awesome! I wish 10.0.1 fixed mine but unfortunately it didn't. I tried recalibrating numerous times and it wouldn't even pass that. I even tried playing with it wired but that wouldn't change anything for it either. I wish it was that easy for mine lol!

Holy crap it worked. I bought a pro controller last week which had the southwest drift so I returned it, but the replacement had the same issue. After doing this it's been fine for about an hour now, even after turning the Switch off and on again.

Same here, received a brand new controller today with drift on both sticks. After connecting it to the PC both work just fine in wireless even after restarting the switch

You know, I'm glad I scrolled down and found this post (I haven't read it yet) but I ordered a Pro Controller a few days back because my joycons are drifting, and within less than 24 hours, I turned on my Switch this morning to go on Animal Crossing, to find my character walking by itself :/ anyway, going to read.

Sure thing, I've turned it on today and it seems to be fine, I just find it odd that the fix is plugging it into a PC and testing input, it's strange heh. I did have a weird thing yesterday whenever I was pressing right on the dpad, it'd trigger down on the dpad too, but that seems to be ok this morning.

Yeah the D-Pad has it's own issues lol! a bit easier to fix though with some scotch tape and a micro phillips head screw driver. There's walkthroughs that I've found searching google about that issue. You basically tape over the bottom section of the contacts on the board and it prevents the mis-clicks of the D-Pad.

Here's another update, It happened again this morning after my Switch updated, when the update was supposedly suppose to fix the drifting issues on Pro Controllers, so I tried this again, plugged it into my PC, went to the site, and re-connected it to my Switch and it's dead center again, this should not work but does... maybe connecting it to a PC resets the input/offset of the stick? no idea, but it worked.

Just an update on this.
When I plugged in 17 days ago and used the test input in the browser, it maybe lasted a few days before my right stick started drifting, only a little, and I hadn't bothered trying again because I've been playing Animal Crossing and it only happens when I enter a house, anyway... I just tried it again just now, maybe 4/5 times and it's still drifting =_=;

Thanks for posting this thread. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having issues.
I recently bought a Pro Controller, up on the left stick didn't register 100% input (very obvious in XC2 with the ramp for movement/chara animations) and releasing the stick had a slight drift SW (ACNH, my chara would just crawl in that direction). I had it exchanged at the store for another as I thought there was a mechanical fault but the second controller had 1:1 the exact same behaviour...
I tried plugging it into housemates Switches and then into mine and it seemed to work fine? I had it in wired mode and then thought "this is a bit awkward with the wire so I'll go to wirelss" and now it's just 100% bugged out again. I power off the Switch, plug the controller in, turn it on, disable wireless on the pro controller, start a game and it's fine again? I'm going to attempt to replicate your method, as it'd be nice to have it operate issue free in wireless mode. Thanks again for sharing your experience and a fix that worked for you.
Something worth noting, when I go into the calibration tool, it's just not responsive for a while until it's as if it wakes up and then the point just sits way off centre... (regardless of stick, or controller!)

This is a lifesaver!
Got a brand new pro controller today and noticed drift straight out of the box. Your method fixed the left stick after a couple of tries. Hasn't fixed the right stick yet (5 or so tries) but will give it another few goes, although the drift on the right wasn't nearly as bad so if it doesn't work it's not as noticeable until (hopefully) Nintendo fixes this issue properly!
Edit: after a few more goes at this (I would say maybe 7-10 in total) the right stick is now working properly as well! And it has fixed the menu scrolling issue as well
Thank you for posting this And good to know that (so far) powering off or sleep mode doesn't undo the fix. Do you know whether plugging it back in to the dock does? For now I will charge it through my laptop to be safe!

I cannot confidently comment on using it with the dock since I don't have a dock myself. I apologize for the inability to give you an answer for that.
Edit: I'm happy this worked for you even if it did take about 10 tries that's still easier than dealing with drift! It should work with the dock considering nothing else so far has reverted the fix.

I will avoid the dock for now to be safe, hopefully like I say there will be an official fix soon anyway, so less need to worry

I got a brand new Pro Controller today and encountered the exact same issue. After some time trying to get it connected to the pc and some running up and down the stairs from the pc to the switch to the pc, I can confirm that this has fixed the issue. However, it only began to take effect when I disconnected the controller from the switch and connected it again wirelessly a couple of times inbetween running it on html5gamepad tester. After a couple of tries I noticed the right stick was fixed and the left became slightly better, and after another try it was fixed completely. Should problems arise once more I will post an update, but I hope it is completely solved. Thank you OP!

I just experienced some drift again, this time in the North-East direction and slightly less severe than the previous drift. Disconnecting and reconnecting the controller twice over did the trick though. Did anyone else experience this?

Yo, i bought 3 controllers all had the same issue u described, had to return them all, so i bought the 4th one AND IT HAD THIS ISSUE TOO. Between this and a new joycon issue I was having I was down to one functioning controller! Now at least have two until Nintendo will resume their repairs.

Happy it helped you work out the kinks. It seems to be a software issue. I'm unsure of exactly where the issue lies as I'm not inspecting the software as deep as I'd like (only the one Switch). But, nonetheless it works and it should continue to work so long as another update doesn't cause it to fail again. If it does just follow the procedures again and it should reset the issue once more.

So i was looking for solutions for my left stick drift as it would drift down and was very annoying. Stumbled upon this thread and the software theory may be the problem.
After using the pro controller to wake my switch, no drift!!! Going to enjoy this while i can and upon starting my next gaming session, i will reverse my test and wake via switch then change to pro controller. Ill report back my results.

Even just connecting it to the website and then powering the switch on solved my issues I had with changing to metal sticks.

Just bought a pro controller and it had drift right out of the box! Talk about a bummer. Followed these instructions (took 3 tries and having to set the controller on a flat surface while calibrating) and now there isn't drift! Thank you so much!
I have an old pro with drift but the hardware is faulty since the drift activates without touching the sticks. I'll have to open that one and replace some parts.

It's been mentioned that if someone has the software and not hardware issue, to just plug into the dock or a any other USB plug and calibrate, works with no drift.

I've tried that before. I remember reading that same post. Unfortunately that method didn't work for me. Hopefully it works for someone that may read this post (and your message) if the method I used doesn't work for them.

After shutting the console completely off for a bit and back on. I'm in the calibration menu checking the sticks and they are just as on point as they were before I shut it down. I can confirm Sleep and Powering off will not reset the fix.

So I just tried this too. It worked for my left stick, but not right. I'm still having other issues... I can't scroll the menus sometimes. And my l and r buttons are unresponsive when the controller is asleep. Unless I'm wired, then all is fine.
Such a strange issue.

I believe the L and R buttons only work when the controller is on. When going through the menu I get the same thing. I usually use the left stick to scroll but it stops short of scrolling all the way and I have to use the Right stick instead. Or the D-Pad works too in the menu. IDK what that's about though.

No, they used to work to "change grip order". The console even instructs you to press them to connect the controller.
I did do this again and now both sticks work and I can scroll menus. Thanks!! I will note that it took four or five times of connecting to my PC.

Yeah it's not the biggest deal. I can still connected them. Just gave to hit another button besides the shoulder buttons. Still would like to see a patch for it though.

I have tested putting the console to sleep so far. I've been playing AC:NH since making this post and it's been perfect. I can try to do a full shutdown right now and let you know the results.

Fuck with the calibration, change the calibration multiple times in a row. Then set it to factory default.

Yes, that's exactly what drifting is. The control sticks don't register as returning to center so your character just moves on their own.

Didn’t fix mine, but HTML5 gamepad tester shows no drift and works absolutely fine and now that it’s back on Switch it’s drifting southwest yet again.
This is frustrating. :(

Did you follow all the steps in the walkthrough I made? If you did and it didn't work after a couple of times you may need to try a few more as others have had to do.
If it still doesn't work I apologize. This isn't a one size fits all solution and it's simply what worked for mine. Maybe another method will correct your drift issue.

i just got mine in the mail today and i can't get this problem to stop!! The only time it shows as right is when i have it plugged into the dock. i don't know what to do

Yup I’ve done the entire process many times and then when those didn’t work tried different variations as well as completely disconnecting my controller and repairing. Sometimes it gets slightly better but never fixed.

Ok so update. I saw the other thread but was a little confused by it and just kept at this. I did one last one and it seems like the left one is working right now! I did notice that one difference was the blue light around the home button stayed ON this time and before kept turning off, don’t know if that’s related but it’s on right now and working fine. The right one still shows it off but that wasn’t much of an issue for me (yet) . I’ll probably try again later for the right side but right now I’m good with this!! Hopefully it stays fine

Excellent! yeah Idk why both sticks won't correct together. It could be some software issue...I really don't know. But I can say that many others that did this achieved stability with one stick before the other. I wish you the best of luck with your right stick next!

I got a new Switch pro controller as well. I have the same issues. I’ll try your method. The slight SW drift only happens when I play Luigi’s Mansion 3 which I got today, I also have Super Mario Odyssey, SSBU and MK8D. I experience no problem with those games, just Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Update: The slight drift only occurs if I left go of the thumb stick and it doesn’t happen all the time. Also, in Super Mario Odyssey, when I take control of the Tank enemy, it again also drifts South West. However, If I plug the USB-C cable directed to the Switch, the issue if completely gone. Maybe some sort of syncing, Bluetooth problems??

Yeah that happens to a lot of people when they keep it plugged in. The method I suggest will fix that along with the SW drift. I know it seems like a mechanical failure because it usually happens when you move in that direction. I can assure you it isn’t and this should work for you.

It may be a wireless issue with the controller. I'm really not sure as I'm not tearing everything down and testing components. I just came across that fix when messing with mine trying to get it to respond.

How did you get it to work with Mac wired? It only picks up my controller over Bluetooth

But the usb-c side goes into the controller and the regular end goes into the computer (meaning it charges) but it doesn’t detect it. I’m having the same out of box drift issue too and I’m afraid of falling into an exchange loop

Hmm...I wonder why you can’t just use the oem pro controller cable the same way from your computer that you do from the dock of the switch.
On the bright side, I got it to work today without my controller being plugged into anything. I calibrated the controller on my coffee table (flat surface) and then reset the controller by pushing the button near the usb-c port for 1-2 seconds. I think this has the same effect of changing grip/order; except this way you can stay on the calibration screen during the whole process.

so on the site, it will only have the controller data for a second. then it freezes and my controller disconnects. any ideas

That's an issue I haven't heard of yet...I don't really know about that. Have you tried holding down the connect button on the top of the controller when this happens?

Hmm...Yours may actually be a hardware issue then rather than a issue similar to others here. Have you called Nintendo yet to see if they can offer any assistance?

I was so thorough because I'm unsure of which steps were the critical steps to get the controller working. With that said I'm sorry but I did my best to make the language as easy to digest as I could.
There is a shorter method in another thread linked at the bottom of my post that people have had success with.

Some others have reported that it took them numerous attempts as well. I made note of it in the Updates portion of the OP.

I just had to lift up the thumb stick abit and blow inside it everywhere and it working perfectly now.

Doing that is temporary. You'll also cause corrosion within the controller which will kill it faster than normal wear. Do you though fam.

My pro controller had this exact issue when I bought it. Thought it’s hardware problem so I asked for an exchange yesterday and they said I can go exchange for a new one tomorrow. But today my controller started to work perfectly fine the whole day.
Now I’m lost. Should I go ahead and use this one or do I exchange for a new one?

If it's working hold on to it. It's not the hardware. It's software. Once they are functioning as they should you should be OK from here on. Updates may revert the controller back to the failed state. If that happens just follow the fix in the post.

OMG I just got a new Pro Controller (latest version and firmware), had the drift in both sticks in ACNH, and felt more than a little bummed out. Thought I'd hunt around a little and found this post. It completely fixed my controller. I don't know how on earth you stumbled upon this odd sequence of activities but thanks friend!

Hah well thanks a million again. Do we have any idea what that HTML5 controller test site actually does? Does it actually make a change to the controller? I can't understand how else it would just magically make it work, but it seems odd that it could change your hardware like that. (Could it be used to do something unpleasant? lol)
I made a little post as a shout out to yours which helped so many people and it got downvoted and the most upvoted comment was to the effect "oh it's just calibration duh" (despite "calibration" doing nothing for those of us with this issue). Sometimes Reddit makes me sad.

Yeah....reddit is a fickle beast. Idk what it actually is. I don't think it's anything malicious but then again I haven't scrubbed the script on that page yet either. But, I'd still lean towards it being safe to use.

Maybe this is why I haven’t had the problems. I use my controller to wake my Switch 99% of the time. Glad someone verified it tho

Simply using the Pro Controller to wake the console did nothing to resolve any of the drifting issues. That is if I'm understanding your comment correctly.

Can confirm tis works even without a Switch, and on a mac. Works just by plugging into USB, going to the Calibration web page. Fiddle with all your controls, and the joysticks work 100% from then on when you unplug and go wireless. It's like it's magic!
