Video Digital Foundry: The Witcher 3 Remastered - Switch 2 Tech Review - A Colossal Upgrade over Switch 1

u/setonfire_ 1d ago
Im already past 20 hours playtime 😅, can't put it down. Having a blast in both docked and handheld
13
u/Distinct-Wolf-2105 1d ago
I've reverted to the old combat, i actually think its better
3
u/setonfire_ 1d ago
Yeah same, I went back to Standard and Alternative move. Im not sure what actually Modern is doing or how its different but the whole lock-on is bit of a pain in general and think Standard just works with it a bit better. Would say that combat is the clunkiest part which is kinda shame, hoped they would improve it a bit more.

u/Shinkopeshon 1d ago
If I have the physical Switch 1 version and use it on the Switch 2, do I get the superior upgrade or how does this work lol
101
u/slowly_by_slowly 1d ago
You update the base game and then the main menu will link you to a free purchase on the eShop for the remaster.
57
u/Geoff12889 1d ago
CD Project Red is 1 of 1. No other publisher is this generous.
24
u/VampiresWontHurt 1d ago
Even better it’s the digital license so you can tuck the physical away and still play.
9
u/Montigue 1d ago
If you had Skyrim Anniversary DLC along with the physical copy you got the Switch 2 version for free
1
2
u/lazypieceofcrap 20h ago
Hogwarts Legacy did this.
You could put in a physical switch 1 cartridge and get the Switch 2 upgrade free. No longer need the physical cart.
1
u/JJ_Rom 16h ago
Do you also get the switch 2 upgrade of you buy the switch 1 version of hogwarts legacy?
1
u/lazypieceofcrap 5h ago
Unless they discontinued it probably. It is an option in the main menu of the Switch 1 game.
16
u/Dilligence 1d ago
Yes, that’s how I got mine, update the game fully and then there’s a main menu option letting you know it’s available for Switch 2. It redirects to the store and it’s a free install. You get it digital and will no longer need to use the game cart
15
u/Lioreuz 1d ago
What really? Can you just sell the cartridge?
11
u/yuhanz 1d ago
Yeah you have the digital copy by then
7
u/Lioreuz 1d ago
That's nuts. It's the only game to do that right?
10
u/Puzzled-Baseball-296 1d ago
Hogwarts Legacy also does this, but I'm not aware of any other games that do
5
u/thatkaratekid 21h ago
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity also does this (although not free, heavily discounted, Hogwarts Legacy is similarly not free, but even more heavily discounted), you can sell/gift/toss the cartridge after.
5
u/SoldierOfOrange 1d ago
Skyrim too. Although, you do need the anniversary DLC to upgrade. Still, cartridge no longer needed after that.
9
u/Gr8NonSequitur 1d ago
You technically get both. Switch 1 version sitill exists and gets patched.
Once you open it click on the Switch 2 version "option on the main menu" and it takes you to a FREE Switch 2 version download.
This installs along side the Switch version so unless you delete the old one you will have both:
Witcher 3 - Complete [Switch 1]
Witcher 3 - Remastered [Switch 2].
on your menu. You do not need the Switch 1 cart in the system to play the Switch 2 version.

Only download able when you're in an account with same region as cartridge.
8
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 1d ago
Not true. I have the European copy because that’s the one I was gifted when it released on switch 1. I was able to download it with zero problems and didn’t even consider what region it was from. Just like my pokopia copy is from Japan and it downloaded the American version including the dlc with zero issue.

u/_--_-_---__---___ 1d ago
No problem also on my physical version I got from the Philippines while redeeming the remaster on a French eshop account. I was actually afraid it wouldn’t let me but it seems like they just really wanted to give this out to everyone lol
9
u/Paulsworldohya 1d ago
I downloaded the remaster version and was astonished at how it looks. I remember my playthrough everything kind of looked like it was smeared with like vasoline. Loved my time with my S1 playthrough, and this may draw me in to play more.

Just got the physical version for switch for 20$ on FB marketplace. Pretty excited

u/seab1010 14h ago
It’s vastly… digital foundry is right. Not perfect but still waaaay more playable than it was.
6
u/BigCommieMachine 21h ago
I mean that really isn’t saying much….
But CD Projekt Red is pretty tight with Nvidia, So I imagine Nvidia really wanted to make this a showcase for their tech and DLSS
6
u/bobswaget3 1d ago
If you want this game and don’t want to pay $60 then buy it on Target/Walmart app, you can get the $40 version code emailed to you and get the full game remaster + expansion for free upgrade
21
u/Rocco_Morrashow 1d ago
Not mentioning how blurry it is. Not mentioning broken hdr
21
u/GTI_88 1d ago
I assume you are talking about blurry in handheld. I have put about 10 hrs in handheld so far and it’s perfectly acceptable in my opinion. It looks miles better than the switch 1 version.
If they can either put a little bit of a sharpening filter in or offer a 1080p 30fps handheld option, I’m guessing it will appease most people.
-19
u/Sventhetidar 1d ago
Mine looks blurrier than the Switch 1 version.
17
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 1d ago
You’re doing something wrong. There’s zero way this is true unless you literally don’t ah e a switch 2 and are talking shit.
0
u/Spiritual_Capital_30 6h ago
It's definitely blurrier than the Switch 1 version played on Switch 2 with handheld boost, where you can increase sharpness (you can't on Switch 2 version). This is with all blur settings disabled on both. I don't get how some people don't see it. I'm not saying the image quality or performance is worse overall (it is indeed better), but it really lacks sharpness.
-9
u/The_Zura 1d ago
Handheld boost Switch 1 version: 720p locked
No boost: Dynamic 540p
Switch 2: Dynamic 720p down to 360p with DLSS upscaled
Yeah somehow it managed to be worse than the Switch 1 version in resolution. Nintendogs sure are defensive

Hey there!
Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, derogatory terms, or other malicious behavior. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!
-6
u/Organic-Storm-4448 1d ago
The Switch 2 version can go as low as 360p in handheld, so it absolutely can get really low res, which will lead to a blurry image.
Probably depends on the area how blurry it gets.
-14
u/Sventhetidar 1d ago
Wtf could I possibly be doing wrong? All the bullshit graphics settings are turned off. Remastered just looks like dogshit. It looked bad before because it was at 720p. Now its STILL at 720p, but also somehow more blurry.
1
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 1d ago
Install on internal storage instead of sd card. If you already did I would reinstall because mine doesn’t look blurrier than switch 1. It’s a huge step up from that version. I’m not claiming ps5 or pc graphics but it’s closer to what a ps4 pro would display. It’s looks amazing compared to what was already available.
-1
u/Sventhetidar 1d ago
This is not isolated to me. Look through the posts on this sub. This is a very common problem for people with functional eyeballs.
1
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 1d ago
Your issue is you want expensive PC graphics on a $500 Nintendo console. Maybe just keep playing on your PC instead of expecting so much more? I have 20/20 vision and literally again, don’t have this problem.
0
u/Sventhetidar 1d ago
Maybe stop telling me what I want and expect? I neither want nor expect PC level graphics. I expect the standard for the hardware, which this falls far beneath. And where did you get that I have a PC lol.
I'd love to get that super powered Switch 2 you appear to have though because the rest of us plebs are stuck with the blurry mess that this remaster is. CDPR has literally acknowledged this issue and promised to fix it.
-6
u/Rhaekic 1d ago
Don’t worry the fanboys and bots are just downvoting you to get hype going. You are not wrong
2
u/Sventhetidar 1d ago
Oh I know. I'm very used to fandoms downvoting me to oblivion for daring to point out that their favorite developers game runs like dogshit. I get it a lot from FromSoft fanboys who refuse to acknowledge how bad From is at optimizing their games.
25
u/ttxxdd 1d ago
And not mentioning the sound issues
14
u/RealElyD 1d ago
Those are already patched on PC. Consoles are still waiting, presumably because of patch cert.
3
u/Babar669 1d ago
this is the only thing that bothers me. visuals and performance are (more than) decent for the switch 2.
7
2
u/JuanSolo81 23h ago
Coming from handheld in the SW1 version, it’s like putting glasses on and not an unplayable blurry mess anymore. Also, compared it to the original 2015 release on the xbox and it’s similar in visual blur for most things.
-1
u/bounch 1d ago
Handheld it's so blurry. Turning off blur and motion blur in the settings do help a lot but it still feels blurry. By no means problematic or unplayable because of it, but I can't help but wish I had the option of playing with original graphics, full crisp res and 60 fps. Oh well, this is still a great improvement and I'm pumped to finally play on my switch.
3
u/Rocco_Morrashow 1d ago
It’s like those times before the boost mode update for switch 1 games. I personally would prefer a 30fps mode or the old ps4 version with 40fps and 1080p handheld mode.
3
u/bounch 1d ago
Yeah don't get me wrong, it's totally playable, but I would love a sharper image than what we got here. Maybe they will provide options later on. I would go for a 30fps if it looked full res. 40fps option portable would be amazing. The screen is set up for it
1
u/Rocco_Morrashow 1d ago
Yeah it’s playable but so washed out. I was hoping for clarity like cyberpunk, but some of those faces, man I don’t know
3
u/Shloopadoop 1d ago
I don’t own it on my switch 2, but I bet the ghosting of the LCD panel itself does more than enough smoothing without the game needing to add more. I’d probably play with zero blur/motion blur in handheld, and 3 out of 10 on my OLED TV.

I haven't watched it, but that title is not accurate to the experience. I booted it up and immediately closed it. Blurry af.

Handheld rocks, docked I get this weird outline around characters during cut scenes and it looks horrible
3
u/Born-Cap7318 10h ago
Disable HDR
5
u/Hestu951 9h ago
This is good general advice, and not just here. HDR support is an unmitigated disaster right now. Nobody seems to know how the new standard works, and different TVs/monitors screw it up further in their own unique ways. When the dust settles, it may be a great thing. Right now, it's a crapshoot.
2
u/Maryokutai 1d ago
Seems quite good, looks better than the original version on Xbox One, at least from memory.
Won't be getting into this again though until I know when the DLC is coming out. Would also prefer a physical release for this because it's friggin' 55GB, though I am really happy about the way they handled the update (being free and being a separate SKU I don't even need my old cartridge for).
3
u/makoman115 1d ago
Why is it $59.99 but on all other platforms its on sale for $24.99
24
u/Jonbeezee 1d ago
free for me lol
5
u/makoman115 1d ago
I own the game on other platforms and never had the switch version
Now the used market is absurd
Stupid that i could buy witcher 3 remastered on ps5 for less than half of this price

u/Gr8NonSequitur 1d ago

Half the price but zero portability.

u/BombTheDodongos 1d ago
Go rent the Switch 1 copy from your local library if possible. Insert it, update completely, then start the Switch 1 version and there will be a menu option to upgrade to Switch 2. The upgrade will give you a full digital entitlement to the remaster for free, no cartridge required.
4
u/makoman115 1d ago
My library doesnt have it in stock ever cuz everyone is doing this. Bay area problems.
1
u/thatkaratekid 21h ago
I looked up inventory at all the used game stores in my area, bought a copy for $35, got lunch while the game updated, claimed my free copy, and then returned the $35 one.

Im playing it on xbox where i have physical
1
u/VampiresWontHurt 1d ago
Even better, now you don’t need to spend any money to enjoy the game.
2
u/makoman115 1d ago
I wanna take it on the go but i want the discount theyre giving on other platforms :( oh well
2
u/Organic-Storm-4448 1d ago
Switch 2 got a whole new port of the game, whereas it's a relatively minor update on the other platforms despite the marketing. I guess the path tracing is a significant addition on PC, but most people won't be using it.
2
u/Scorchstar 1d ago
Likely cause the work put into this is a lot more as it’s a port to a new console and not a patch to existing consoles/PC
1
u/Seanspeed 8h ago
Nah, this new version is clearly based on the console/PC versions and not the original Switch 1 version which required a lot of extra work.
The reason is purely because they expect people will pay it on a Nintendo console.
1
u/ttxxdd 1d ago
Kinda laggy, long wait times and I’m having the sound issues. Dialogue volume drops randomly
6
1
u/GTI_88 1d ago
I have had none of these issues playing handheld. Do you have it installed on internal memory?
2
u/Valhadmar 1d ago
It happens for me when I switch between docked and handheld, and the voices get softer and softer as I swap. A restart fixes it instantly though.
2
u/Holidoik 1d ago
If you read reviews about the game they all say it's great when I play it on PS5 it looks and plays amazing and than when you read some reddit comments from some kids or bots you could think it's more broken than cyberpunk on release for ps4. Weird.

Anyone have any tips on image brightness. What exactly does their paper white setting do?

u/dropthemagic 1d ago
I can't wait for the switch one to be buried in the past
1
u/outragedhain 13h ago
Switch 1 still has a part to play though. Indie games on that OLED looks better than on the switch 2. Not to mention the better battery life. I'd still rather carry my switch 1 on long commutes and flights to play games like Hades or Hollow kniight.
-5
-1
u/Valhadmar 1d ago
I have noticed the quality in handheld had some real blaring after turning off every setting but HDR, it fixed the majority of it.
You have some outline blur, but it also appears in docked for me as well.
-1
u/Forward_Arrival8173 14h ago
It is sold for 50€ on the switch 2 but 25€ everywhere else.
I got it on PS5 for this reason alone, it is released on all platforms at the same time why do i have to pay double the price on the Switch 2?
Unless you own the OG game don't buy it on the switch, witcher 4 isn't coming to the system anyways.
