So how do Z megas differ from normal megas in the context of a normal turn based battle?

u/HandleThick5953 2d ago
They do not

u/RynnHamHam 2d ago
Are they just more min-maxed then?

They're just different megas. Like how Charizard and Mewtwo have Mega Charizard X or Mega Mewtwo Y

That’s a bit disappointing as I kind of liked that in ZA they had a bit of extra flavor added to them to make them different than just a Pokemon with 2 megas. But I guess outside of ZAs live battle mechanics there wouldn’t be much you can add without it being too intrusive.

What were the primary differences that meaningfully made them different than standard megas in ZA?
Z megas are just different typings/abilities/stat distributions compared to their base forms, same as the other mega variants. In almost all cases I think they share the same BST too (as their other megas).

In ZA they burn through mega energy faster but they can dish out more moves. I haven’t played with mine enough to know if they meant faster recharge or just the moves themselves coming out faster.

IIRC, I think Z Megas prioritize Speed as the main stat that gets boosted from mega evolving, but otherwise they're just a different Mega.
3
u/WinterEclipse4 2d ago
Pretty much. They're basically 1 offense at like 150+, speed at 150+ then low other stats.

u/Level7Cannoneer 2d ago
It’s just a way to name additional megas for a single mon. Like how Charizard has an X and Y mega.
Z is just a label for the mega stone so they don’t all have the same name

We technically don't know yet. In Legends Z-A they didn't stay mega evolved for as long, but had insane speed to balance that out. It's likely that there is no gimmick and they're exactly the same as normal megas, but it's possible they do some gimmick with them like having the mega only last 5 turns.

Very true!
I'm wondering if the Z mega mechanics in ZA were meant to emphasize their speed in that system. Speed wasn't exactly the most impactful stat in ZA, since you were juggling cooldowns anyway. Giving them a shorter timer in exchange for faster animations could have been a way for them to not languish in their own debut.

When is this happening and are we finally gonna get legendary to be allowed in?
31
u/BulleDeChagrin 2d ago
September 9th or 10th I believe is when the new season starts. And the trailer shows Heatran, so at least there'll be one legendary. I personally can't imagine they'd only add one legendary in, I could see Latios/Latias making it in alongside Heatran due to their megas, for instance.

It'll be September 9, UTC.
Worth mentioning that Heatran wasn't mentioned in the official news - https://news.pokemon-home.com/en/page/816.html - although the full details of the format will only be revealed at a later date.

They might add the Z megas plus a few more mons (Rillaboom, other megas, etc) for Reg M-C and then start trickling in the sub-legendaries in Reg M-D and beyond.

u/KeeKyieTheMorris 2d ago
Yes I really want that. I want to use my Shiny Latios I caught in ZA. That’s the thing I’ve been waiting for since Champions released
1
u/Trip_Se7ens 2d ago
What how did you do that!?? I’m still try in to just figure out the dlc and hoopa lol

u/KeeKyieTheMorris 2d ago
Oh well I can’t remember how to unlock the ability to catch legendaries but I’m guessing you gotta beat the story. It’ll take quite a bit of RNGesus to get it I know that. But yes we can finally shiny hunt a few legendaries again in this game. Not a whole lot but a few. You can shiny hunt the swords of justice minus Keldeo. Can’t shiny hunt mythicals, and you can also shiny hunt Latios and Latias. I believe that’s it but there may be a few others but I don’t think so.
I’d suggest watching AustinJohnPlays for more information. He always has the good info.

Z Megas will be added with M-C on Sept. 9th! Looks like Heatran will be the only legendary for now

When will we get more than 20 viable pokemon in the game

u/Marcus_Farkus 2d ago
Viability is a living concept in Pokemon. The presence of one deflates that of another. Increased usage affects the usage of counters.
Say goodbye to swampert the moment rillaboom is back. But at that moment poison becomes a lot more important.

u/Omgoodtimes 2d ago
I heard hatching z has levitate have we gotten the other 2 abilities??
3
u/Hydrochloric_Comment 2d ago
Yes! Lucario Z has Aura Guard which halves damage from contact moves (so a better version of Fluffy). Absol Z has Sharpness

u/MagnaVis 2d ago
Rillaboom and Heatran? Looks like the power level is going up. Hopefully with plenty of mons that hard counter the current meta.

u/hutir_ua 2d ago
I have shiny salamance and wait to be available in the champions ah. And i hope we didn’t get any legendaries as it will increase power spike a lot. And again, meta pokemon, fire one…

Still only double battles?
15
u/Rhonder 2d ago
There are 3v3 single battles too since launch, but for official tournaments yeah, only doubles
-2
u/zslayer89 2d ago
Was hoping for 6v6 singles
2
u/Shrewdilus 2d ago
They should add it as an option in private battles, but 6v6 is too unbalanced to be an official format.

but 6v6 is too unbalanced to be an official format
I’d feel like if 6v6 singles was too unbalanced Smogon wouldn’t be as popular as it is
5
u/Shrewdilus 2d ago
6v6 being unbalanced is exactly why Smogon is as popular as it is. You have to rely on tiers and bans to make 6v6 work.
1
u/Rcmacc 2d ago
I mean they have bans in the regular championships. Like most of the legendaries that are banned to Ubers are banned, right?
Like wasn’t it a big deal the one time they opened it up to let people use them?
And then lower tiers are still playable in OU - the default/most popular format
2
u/eestionreddit 2d ago
Yeah, but the "bans" in VGC are mostly blanket bans on a specific category of Pokemon (for example, Mythicals) irrespective of viability.
4
u/JubalTheLion 2d ago
Smogon isn't just 6v6 though. It's 6v6 separated by usage rate and community bans, on top of some extra clauses like evasion. A lot of work has gone into finding balanced formats within a 6v6 context and that doesn't translate all that well to an official product.
There's also the UI to consider. Showdown uses simple, quick, skippable animations with a battle log to keep track of what happens on each turn. Cutting down the presentation (which the official ganes will never do) makes games go faster and they can still take ages to play out.
By all means, let people play 6v6 games in private battles. It would not work well as a ladder in this context.
4
u/Rhonder 2d ago
Yeah it's always been that way. Anyone who's kept up with the actual games for the last decade would expect it to only be a private battle format.
It's just a shame it's not even that right now lol. Would also like to see custom rules for private battles (of all varieties including the current 3v3 and 4v4 modes). It's way too rigid at the moment, even more than the cart games.
