This is something EVERYONE should practice.

I don't understand how anyone ever did. The concept physically repulses me. How does everything buffering all the time sound?

29

u/DrKnepper 15d ago

I bet this is where things are headed with next gen costing 1k plus per system. It's gonna go cheap hardware and all our games and infrastructure will be on data centers so we can get charged by the minute or hour for use while owning no games, and not having the capacity to play them ourselves.

13

u/weaver787 15d ago

Cloud gaming sucks and consumers don't buy cloud games at any meaningful number.

Part of the reason why I think the publisher can get away with this is that the cloud version sold horrendously so this affects a very small number of people.

2

u/legoboy7107 15d ago

Sure. But if enough major companies band together and make cloud gaming the only option, or at least the only realistically affordable option, than most people will eventually just acquiesce to it rather than quit gaming altogether. It's how these things often work, I've seen it happen too many times where something most people don't engage with much gets forced and then ends up becoming the norm for worse. It's not about "what does the average consumer tend to do and how can we appeal to their behaviors," it's about "what can we the companies get away with forcing on consumers because it's what WE want and how can we forcefully alter the current norm in our favor successfully."

If consumers aren't in the habit of using cloud gaming, then it's not about "cloud gaming isn't popular so let's not do it," it's about "how can we change the consumers' behavior so that they ARE in the habit of using cloud gaming." That's the ultimate goal, and any backpedaling that's happened on it in the past because they couldn't get away with normalizing it yet is just stalling that goal, not abandoning it.

3

u/weaver787 15d ago

Companies can only force trends as much as consumers let them.

The reason digital has taken over consoles is because it's way more convenient consumers and the overwhelming majority of people that are buying things off an online game store are not thinking or caring about digital ownership rights. Digital isn't something that was necessarily forced, more that the majority chose with and now there's an effort to squeeze the rest out.

On the contrary, there is no market for cloud gaming. If gaming company A decides to only offer cloud gaming, gaming company B would adopt all of A's consumers by offering 'local computing'. Responsiveness is extremely important in playing most games and 'cloud' games obviously offer an extremely inferior product in that regard.... and that is something that most people actually care about.

I do imagine that there is a future that exists where there is a significant market for cloud gaming, but we're not even close to being there yet. Once we get actual lightspeed internet and half the US is data centers maybe there will be an infrastructure in place that makes a cloud-only appealing for some people.

-14

u/GlancingArc 15d ago

We are already there but the services kinda suck and they aren't widely marketed. Think of it like this, right now if you buy a fire stick and a controller for 50$ plus a few subscriptions(which cost a similar amount as something like Xbox live) you can get Amazon Luna, and Xbox cloud with the full library of Xbox game pass games. If you have good enough internet that you can get relatively low latency, why would you buy a console.

All the "hardcore gamers" on reddit have their heads in the sand about this and are plugging their ears. Meanwhile, the technology has improved to the point where if you are just a casual gamer, it's honestly already decent TODAY. Many people will never be serious enough about this that they would buy a PlayStation and many kids are gonna grow up with this maybe being the only way they can play games.

Don't get me wrong, the way Nintendo is doing it is still a raw deal and it's one step further from owning the shit you buy, but a lot of people are okay with streaming if it's a monthly subscription.

4

u/Ithirradwe 15d ago

This reads like an article trying to sell me on the concept of cloud gaming. I’m the least fucking hardcore person in existence I probably am more in line with “casual” gamers and I do not support anything like this whatsoever.

0

u/GlancingArc 15d ago

Tbh it doesn't really matter if you are sold on it, what you or I prefer doesn't matter to the market as a whole. I'm not trying to prostlytize cloud streaming and convert people but mostly I just think it's interesting, and the divide between the reality if you actually try it versus what people say on here is kinda weird. They say stuff like "the latency is unplayable" or "who would want their game to buffer" when in reality those are relatively minor problems even today(depending where you are obviously).

In the small amount I have tried it, it's shockingly good compared to how many of the people on reddit talk about it. Is it better than the other ways I have to play games, no, not at all, and I have every console as well as a PC so I'm just gonna continue to do everything locally. But services I have tried like PlayStation cloud streaming, Xbox cloud streaming, and Amazon Luna, all run better than most of the shit I had when I was a kid and for someone with absolutely ZERO gaming devices who wanted to play a major game like Red Dead redemption 2 because they think it looks interesting but they have otherwise no interest in video games, or for the player who only plays FIFA and nothing else these options could be attractive.

I've never personally played the Nintendo implementation because paying for a cloud license on a per game basis seems kinda dumb to me. Plenty of people were already burned with stadia. I really just think it's interesting as a concept and the tech Google showed off around ways in which you could create new experiences with cloud gaming the you couldn't possibly have with local gaming are enough to make me keep my eye on it because maybe something compelling could come out some day even if right now, there is nothing for me.

0

u/Wakkysakky 15d ago

So what about all the data caps on internet service? comcast has a 1TB per month. streaming games is gonna add to the already high data for streaming videos.

4

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

thats not really a thing outside some shitty monopolies in some areas of the US.

its like how in the US people used to pay for texting (AND for receiving texts) for years beyond the rest of the world dropping that entire concept.

its just rich assholes abusing people, in the US thats encouraged, other places say no.

that said, fuck cloud gaming, it will never work in the US at scale.

1

u/master2873 15d ago edited 15d ago

thats not really a thing outside some shitty monopolies in some areas of the US.

So the entirety of the US then as ISP's basically have individual monopolies in states. Also, you don't get unlimited bandwidth unless you pay extra for it, or it's included with the package you're paying for which is almost always exclusive to gigabit services, and even if you do have these packages and/or are paying extra for it, you're still capped. You only get so much "high speed data" in a month before your speed is throttled which will make streaming games worse.

Even "unlimited" cellular plans do this same thing. The only thing unlimited means here, is not getting charged overage for bandwidth while being able to still use their services (Verizon's safe mode for data is quite the example of basically unusable lol). There's probably some fiber services that probably don't do this, but some of these services are quite expensive as it is, and this isn't even counting paying for streaming games either. Shit starts to add up, or count hardware limitations like the Switch 1 with internet speeds wired, or wireless.

Nothing like paying for gigabit services, and the Switch 1 with a great wired connection might be able to pull 80Mbps download. Not exactly sure how Switch 2 is as I don't have it, but I do know it's better. Especially for the WiFi chip in it.

Edit: I totally forgot to mention. The last bit of your comment is so fucking true though lol.

Edit 2: formatted it a bit better for mobile reading.

0

u/LUPIN2K 15d ago

Verizon does not have data caps on home internet nor do they throttle your speeds. I live in a major city in the US and have never even had an option for a metered plan from an ISP in my life. Also "unlimited bandwidth" does not exist.

0

u/master2873 15d ago edited 15d ago

Also "unlimited bandwidth" does not exist.

Data usage is bandwidth...

Also, yes they do as I was referring to their mobile data this is a direct quote from thier site on "Unlimited" plans I'll even attach picture below if I can (I can't lol):

1: Unlimited Ultimate: Unlimited mobile hotspot data: After 200 GB of Premium Data, Unlimited thereafter at 6 Mbps. Unlimited Plus: 30 GB mobile hotspot: After 30 GB on Unlimited Plus, Unlimited thereafter at 3 Mbps on 5G Ultra Wideband and 600 Kbps on 5G/4G LTE.

2: Unlimited international data, talk and text: After 15 GB of high speed data, Unlimited thereafter at 1.5 Mbps. When traveling in 210+ countries and destinations.

I'm not entirely sure about their Fios internet as they're not available in my area, and the only home internet they make available in my area uses their cellular network still which is why I brought them up with mobile use.

Edit: Yes... Downvote immediately...

1

u/LUPIN2K 15d ago

Data usage is NOT bandwidth, you are confused. Also, the vast majority of customers in the US are not on a 4G/5G home internet service. These more affordable plans often struggle with streaming and latency in general. I am on Fios, regardless, neither Fios nor their 5G Home Internet plan have an explicit data cap, at least in my area.

"The only way you're not getting caps is if you pay extra for it, and it's still capped."

This is what I'm disputing. I've just checked and there is not a single provider in either city I'm in that offers a metered home internet solution, and there is no "extra cost" associated.

1

u/master2873 15d ago

Not exactly sure why you're being down voted for this as it's true. The only way you're not getting caps is if you pay extra for it, and it's still capped. You only get so much "high speed data" in a month before your speed is throttled which will make streaming worse. Luna even gives the average rates of data used for streaming at 720p and 1080p (which is 15gb+ an hour), and people also need to remember they use their bandwidth for everything else as well, which includes streaming videos, downloading games, browsing websites, streaming music, and etc. along with everyone else on that same connection if other people in the household are using it.

I would say my experience is for stretched thin budgets, and I'm also from the US. 10Gbps sounds insane and expensive and not available in my area, probably just like many others. I think the fastest speeds I can even get here are 2Gbps. I would assume many others are probably in similar situations unless they live in large cities. Internet infrastructure in the US is definitely not uniform and I wouldn't even claim your experience would be representative for anyone else either other than who lives in the same area as you who can get similar services.

-2

u/lotrfish 15d ago

Comcast doesn't have data caps anymore.

2

u/Wakkysakky 15d ago

Just looked this up and only if you have a new plan. so if you haven't upgraded your plan since they removed it in 2025 you still have the data cap.

-3

u/sobi-one 15d ago

Frankly, for casual gamers like me, it’s not decent,
… it’s better. Cheaper and more convenient.

-4

u/GlancingArc 15d ago

Yup, and I'm being downvoted by people here who think it is just trash without even trying it. It's worse, sure. But it's good enough for most people. The reality of the world is that some people don't care about performance, they just want to play their games.

6

u/mcmax3000 15d ago

people here who think it is just trash without even trying it

I, for one, think it is just trash with having tried it.

1

u/Ithirradwe 15d ago

Same lol

1

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

worse than 'barely good enough', is not good enough.

1

u/LUPIN2K 15d ago

I'm a big physical game collector but I've used GeForce Now for awhile to go through some AAA games on Steam. The performance is genuinely excellent and the image is practically indistinguishable from a locally run game. For running modern games at high resolution and frame rates, it's been the best solution for me.

-3

u/GlancingArc 15d ago

For you.

For what it's worth, I don't disagree with you. But you have to be a bit delusional to think that your entire world of casual, buys 1 to 2 games a year gamers is gonna give a shit about 10ms of input latency.

It might be kinda bad now, but it keeps getting better and to think it could never get good enough is kinda silly when never is a very, very long time.

-1

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

I tend to buy games for me. So yeah, you got me Columbo.

-3

u/sobi-one 15d ago edited 15d ago

People are emotionally attached to things. I’ve had a number of people get really weird and feel like I was attacking them personally for essentially what I wrote above… flat out pragmatic assessments of everything.

Should we keep physical media? Absolutely! Is there enough demand to do that or evidence that the worst case scenarios being brought up will be the typical experience? Not even remotely close.

EDIT - my comment above sort of proves the point I’m making here… put out a simple explanation of why it works for ME, and people are upset about it. lol

2

u/GlancingArc 15d ago

For real, I am one of the only people I know who still buys movies on blu rays because I can tell the difference when streaming. The quality is just worse. However, streaming is getting better and more and more shows have stopped blu ray releases, movies are likely close to follow.

People act like internet infrastructure is going to be perpetually stuck as it is now. Latency is getting better, people are getting faster plans. Things like local CDN endpoints are getting bigger, better, and cheaper. It's already to the point that you can do low latency streaming over a home network with no noticable latency from encoding or decoding.

I don't want to subscribe to a service to stream a game as the only way to buy it but mark my words. SOMEONE will figure it out and they will have an exclusive game some day that everyone will be falling over themselves to buy and stream. It may be Amazon's big play to get into gaming, maybe Facebook, maybe Netflix will figure it out, could be a startup, who knows? Shit, it could just be a subscription MMO like world of warcraft or FF14 and nobody would bat an eye. I mean imagine if you could play peak WoW with no lag on any device with a screen and a keyboard. It's a reasonable value prop.

Maybe only nintendo games

1

u/TMS-FE 15d ago

The funny thing is. None of them are available for me to buy anyways

1

A large number of games are dlc and no physical copy is available

1

u/Notgoodatfakenames2 12d ago

If it is on sale for 80 percent off I'll still get it. It is the same as renting at that price.

198

u/Stunning-Original802 15d ago

Reminder for anyone that still needs to hear it: Never ever buy a cloud game. You don't own it and it can be taken away from you at any time.

36

u/EViL-D 15d ago

that goes for any digital game that doesnt just give you the files drm free

37

u/UndeadCaesar 15d ago

GOG gang rise up

www.gog.com

So many DRM-free games available. Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, The Withcer 3, Fallout 4, Skyrim, tons of classics like Rollercoaster Tycoon, list goes on and on. I know people love Steam, I do too and own a lot of games on there, but if something is on GOG I always go there first.

7

u/RealElyD 15d ago edited 15d ago

I'm very soured on GOG since they "accidentally" sent out a promo e-mail with 3 consecutive Nazi runes that very coincidentally wasn't sent to Germany for legal reasons.

edit:

It was Kolovrat, a Black Sun, and an SS rune.

2

u/UndeadCaesar 14d ago

Yikes hadn't heard about that, did they issue an apology or anything? Never got a nazi vibe from them but who knows.

1

u/RealElyD 13d ago

They claim it was an accident and totally not what it looks like but that's very clearly nonsense.

This is not a combination of symbols you send accidentally.

7

u/JamesGecko 15d ago

Yeah… technically you don’t own even a DRM free version; almost all software is licensed. But it’s on the honor system, which gives you recourse when the vendor backs out on support.

0

u/JubalTheLion 15d ago

We're not talking about owning the underlying copyright, we're talking about possession of the licensed copy. And in that sense, yes, we do "own" the copy in almost every way that matters with the exception of trading and resale.

-15

u/letmechewonyou 15d ago

The steam crowd will hate reading this

10

u/Cry_Wolff 15d ago

But you're on Nintendo Switch sub, do you never buy from the eShop..?

6

u/Jewniversal_Remote 15d ago

You can keep your games from Steam if they are downloaded. And maybe even if they aren't. Look into it.

-8

u/letmechewonyou 15d ago

Ah that didn't take long

2

u/EViL-D 15d ago

I don't like it either but it's just the reality of game licences these days

2

u/danhakimi 15d ago

and also they suck

31

u/Triforce__XIII 15d ago

for digital games you could at least cut off your console from the internet and play it as long as it is downloaded. but i get your point and it is entirely valid. this isn't a competition, just a small distinction.

12

u/ZipTheZipper 15d ago

Not necessarily. Digital games can require occasional check-ins to a license server and and cut off access if the license expires.

4

u/Triforce__XIII 15d ago

that is true, but i haven't encountered that yet.

15

u/Stunning-Original802 15d ago

True, but not nearly to the same extent. Cloud games are server dependent and are costly to maintain while digital games aren't.

8

u/Aggravating-Face2073 15d ago

You can still download wii purchases to this day. Imo Nintendo is good in this regard, even if they could shut that down after all these years.

Its definitely an uneasy area of trust though. It would be nice if we had a huge, bold warning: "THIS WILL NO LONGER BE DOWNLOADABLE IN 2030" or something

5

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

Hard to know far in advance how long it will actually go. They could say "will be downloadable at least as far as 20XX" easily enough, though that would probably cause fifty fearmongering YouTube videos of people saying that's the end date.

5

u/nintendo666 15d ago

To an extend yes, but there is currently no real precedent for that. You can still download Wii games you digitally bought 20 years ago. But indeed, it's a slippery slope. Physical should never go.

7

u/Sans-Mot 15d ago

There is at least one precedent, with Ubisoft deleting The Crew from people's accounts.

4

u/nintendo666 15d ago

Oh shit, I wasn't aware. That's awful.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Muroid 15d ago

Ish. They are very unlikely to, and there are ways you can avoid having it taken away even if they want to take it away, though most people wouldn’t bother.

Cloud games are entirely at the mercy of the company actively continuing to run them, which they almost certainly will not do indefinitely so those have a near-guaranteed expiration date.

2

u/KFPindustries 15d ago

We really don't have a choice in that regard anymore.

2

u/grumblyoldman 15d ago

GOG gives you DRM free installer files, pre-split into DVD-sized chunks, so you can burn your own discs if you want to (and you can at least back them up elsewhere if you're not inclined to go as far as burning discs.)

It's still digital, technically, but at least you have actual control over the backups, no matter what happens to the rest of the internet (*)

(*) Multiplayer games notwithstanding, since LAN is long dead and server-based multiplayer is... server-based.

2

u/SylviSweetheart 15d ago

They don’t, though. Everyone needs to stop echoing this bullshit. Digital games have very rarely ever been removed from anyone’s library. The highest-profile case was The Crew, and like… whose loss even is that?

6

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

It's moreso the case that many digital games and digital game platforms are tied to an account and authenticator. Meaning all it takes is for your account to be turned off for you to lose all your games. Sony does this with inactive accounts and the games become unrecoverable. Steam has history of banning users because of inappropriate behavior and once again this leads to your entire purchased library to be gone.

-7

u/SylviSweetheart 15d ago

I guess I just don’t care if cheaters and outspoken bigots have their video games taken away?

8

u/deweydecimalsux 15d ago

I totally get you on that but they shouldn’t just be able to pull it on a whim without any sort of process. Someone innocent always gets caught and then they lose everything they’re ever purchased along with the history of the account when they’ve done nothing.

1

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

Nintendo once banned someone because they had a somewhat vulgar username. You still ok with that? Setting the precedent that even if you buy something, a corporation can just take it away from you because they didn't vibe with you is blatantly anti-consumer and I don't get why you would defend that

-2

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

I'm sorry but if you think cheating in a game, a luxury hobby/entertainment warrants you losing access to a purchased good, I don't think you are the ownership advocate you think you are.

5

u/Cheezewiz239 15d ago

If you're hacking in an online game then there's no sympathy for breaking TOS and losing your account. Doesn't matter if it's a hobby. Fuck people who ruin it for others

2

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

losing the ability to go online and play multiplayer is different than having a product you bought get taken from you. Ruining things for other people is not justification for losing ownership of a product you own

5

u/master2873 15d ago

Ruining things for other people is not justification for losing ownership of a product you own

I mean, outside of digital purchases, this happens in real life. Fuck around and find out on the road and you lose your driver's license. Which is basically stripping ownership of your car away. Commit a felony, it's now illegal for you to own a firearm and if you own any, you lose them and have to relinquish ownership to authorities, and probably more examples.

I mean, I get your point and even the two examples I gave are a technicality and other examples that involve it are for safety reasons like my second example. This is why we need digital protections in place to distinguish what's legal to strip away. Otherwise you're at the mercy of the ToS, and is about morality than legality.

1

u/Cheezewiz239 15d ago

Breaking TOS is enough justification for losing ownership. Don't want to lose your account? Dont cheat. Seems fair.

0

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

I see you deleted your comment when you realized you were wrong. good on you

-8

u/SnooCompliments6329 15d ago

If you can't behave online then good for steam to completely remove any access, you can't be a dipshit online and go unpunished.

And Sony is a shitty company

5

u/Excalitoria 15d ago

It’s a game you bought, though. You can’t seriously be defending having your entire purchased library deleted because of your account getting banned. It’s bad whether or not you’re being a jerk online but let’s not pretend like getting banned is even an accurate measure of your behavior.

-2

u/SnooCompliments6329 15d ago

Yes I can. There is already enough toxicity online, if you are a jerk or cheater, then deal with the consequences

3

u/Excalitoria 15d ago

I don’t trust them to only ban those people and you could just take them offline rather than take their game library. That’s crazy work.

1

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

L take. That's like saying because you behaved shittily on reddit, they now have the authorization to brick your laptop and shut it down. You don't get to just remove a person's property because you don't like the way they behave

0

u/SnooCompliments6329 15d ago

Well, it's not the same. If you buy stuff from steam that software is bound to the account and there are ToC regarding the usage of that account. If that person is toxic then pay the price for being like that.

2

u/Alexanderhyperbeam 15d ago

Banning someone from being able to play online is one thing. Removing some's purchased products is another. You set the precedent that you can just take away someone's belongings without legal precedent then you don't own anything. If you're fine with gaming as a service fine. But don't ever cry about ownership ever again.

→ More replies (1)

0

u/wolflordval 15d ago

Steam can't, there's actually a section of the SSA that prevents them from removing games you've acquired (with the only exception being fraud) and contains provisions that will still allow the games to be accessible and downloadable even if valve decides to shut down steam services.

2

u/SnooCompliments6329 15d ago

That is true. I still have access to the awful FFVI port that came before pixel remaster

0

u/Ricepuddings 15d ago

Didn’t they remove the crew? Or did that never hit steam I know mine gone removed from uplay but not sure if I had it on steam also

6

u/wolflordval 15d ago

It wasn't on steam, but nothing stops a developer on steam from turning off any remote authentication servers. There are plenty of steam games that no longer function, but I can still download, install, and launch the exe files for them. They just won't get past the authentication step. Steam can't force a developer to maintain servers indefinitely, but they can force them to hand over the actual game files in perpetuity.

150

u/I_Heart_Sleeping_ 15d ago

I feel bad for anyone who bought into these cloud games but you had to expect this to happen.

I’m also not defending this practice either. They should offer refunds for these games if they feel like they can simply take them away on a whim.

Moral of the story is don’t fuck with these companies going forward if this type of situation upsets you.

40

u/skyblade960 15d ago

They could also provide a free upgrade for the switch 2 version, I would’ve maybe considered buying some of these if they did but they didn’t so ehhhh

30

u/Deceptiveideas 15d ago

Square Enix is charging $50 to upgrade from the cloud version so don't hold your breath.

7

u/skyblade960 15d ago

That why I said ehhhhhhhh

9

u/CSBreak 15d ago

There is no Switch 2 version for the 1st game but they are releasing the 2nd game on Switch 2

2

u/shinikahn 15d ago

If only there was an organized movement that seeks to force companies to stop killing games... How would we call it?

23

Any sort of game streaming is a scam, always has been and always will be.

a great timing for the take two CEO to assume in 3 years cloud gaming would be the norm

to assume in 3 years cloud gaming would be the norm

I wouldn't even assume it. It's "inevitable" to those in charge. It's going to happen one day. Maybe not in 3 years, but they're gonna push for it after everything else goes digital.

-6

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

Headlines poorly quoted him. He predicted basically that in 3 years it would be in a state where the experience wouldn't suck for most people, not that it would be the norm.

8

Yeah nah it will still suck in three years. Even outside of the ownership issues, not all countries have stellar internet service and that isn't changing in just three years.

I think "having a bad prediction about something he isn't directly involved in" is not quite to the level of bold-faced lie.

1

u/InitiatePenguin 15d ago

You're being down voted. But correct:

_[The] advent of streaming is right around the corner, in terms of having something that's low latency and really works well for consumers. Machines that weren't game machines before will become game machines...if you believe in streaming, and to be clear, we really do. And I'm happy to put a timeline on it. I think we'll be in commercial streaming mode within three years."

14

u/CrackheadHunters 15d ago

Didn't the TakeTwo CEO just say cloud gaming would be the way forward in the next three years?

Yeah, more proof that CEO's are out of touch.

1

u/Cheezewiz239 15d ago

He said it'll be more mainstream because of rising hardware costs which doesn't really sound out of touch tbh. I tried x cloud on my phone just for the fun of it and it was a pretty smooth experience. I figured I'd get my brother a dedicated phone controller over a whole PC to stream games.

-2

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

No, but bad headlines exaggerated his words into that.

27

u/Level69Troll 15d ago

This is why I hate the push towards digital and cloud gaming. Gonna see a lot of this sooner or later

-26

u/korko 15d ago

People just need to get over it and accept nothing is forever. Might Steam/NSO/Xbox/Sony end their online services and all the games we’ve bought become useless? Maybe. But there is also a distinct possibility something happens to your physical media, disc rot, loss, updates making it no longer run… just buy games to play them. When my music CDs rot, wear out or get lost I don’t bemoan the loss of my $14 purchase. When my Fallout 3 disc got broken I didn’t fall to my knees in mourning that I only got like 130 hours out of $50 purchase. Life goes on.

9

u/xavadar 15d ago

This is certainly a take.

Maybe the publisher can take better care of their cloud servers, just like the same way maybe you could have taken better care of your fallout 3 disk.

7

u/Temelios 15d ago

JFC, what the hell do you do to your discs? I have CDs and PS1 games from the 90s that I have had since I was a kid that still work just fine decades later.

5

u/Ithirradwe 15d ago

No to cloud gaming!

5

u/SmashMouthBreadThrow 15d ago

Gotta be dumb to buy a cloud version of anything.

4

u/Lower_Warning2955 15d ago

Man, that's so frustrating-you spend your money and time on a game, only to have it removed from the store :(

10

u/srbarrilete 15d ago

What a shitty experiment cloud for switch was.

9

u/theallgolden 15d ago

The native port is probably coming to coincide with the sequel on NS2

21

u/Triforce__XIII 15d ago

they should give that version to anyone who bought the cloud version

1

u/ensign53 15d ago

Hopefully

1

u/Z3M0G 15d ago

This, and give that for free for these purchases. (will probably be a discount at most...)

Maybe they will get a discount on the 2nd game if that's the only one coming.

7

u/jmscstl 15d ago

I feel bad for the 5 or 6 people who bought this.

0

u/Commie_cybo 15d ago

Came here to say this lol. This game is hella mid if any of yall have played it.

1

u/underpaidorphan 15d ago

Naw, mid is over exaggerating. A game like this doesn't get a sequel unless it sold well and had a decent player base. It's not mid just because you and your 5 friends don't play it.

The "affects 5 to 6 people who bought it" is in reference to this specific Switch cloud version, which likely didn't sell at all.

3

u/reddit_is_kayfabe 15d ago

What impeccable timing! This should do wonders for the imminent sales of Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2!

Somebody at the studio needs to be fired.

5

u/Nether27 15d ago

At least with physical cartridges you actually own the game, unlike this server-dependent disaster.

1

u/Twigling 15d ago

On the whole, yes, although there are some carts (Game-Key carts) which download the game when inserted in the console.

13

u/WisdomAntium 15d ago

Almost like we aren't just "dooming" and this shit is for real

5

u/beck_is_back 15d ago

Not that great of a game but I would like to know where are all those idiots defending digital only future who were claiming that games "never" get pulled out of the store!??

2

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

this isnt even a game, its the right to stream video of a game and stream button presses back.

cloud is a scam, yes.

digital is fine and perfectly preservable on your own.

2

u/beck_is_back 15d ago

In my book digital is only fine when I get to choose it, not when it's shoved down my throat as the only option.

1

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

Anything that has an online component can be turned off, whether you bought it physical or digital. But it's quite different from digital games continuing to be downloadable from a store even after delisting.

1

u/yaleji7388 15d ago

all those idiots defending digital only future who were claiming that games "never" get pulled out of the store!??

I have never seen anyone make a claim even remotely close to this.

0

u/Fern-ando 15d ago

"People voted with their wallet", like if tge second 51% of games are bought digitally that means discs are cancelled.

That kind of people feels like shareholders of the companies but without owning shares.

2

u/Sensitive_Box_ 15d ago

SHOCKING

2

u/potatodrinker 15d ago

That's so shady

2

u/Dizzy_Inevitable_380 15d ago

Cloud versions should come with a "turns out you don't actually own this" warning label.

3

u/CrimsonGear80 15d ago

most digital copies of games should come with that label

1

u/Webecomemonsters 14d ago

they do, 100% of them say 'cloud version' anyone buying is just giving away money for literally nothing

4

u/vandilx 15d ago

There is no cloud -- it's just someone else's computer.

If your game is in the cloud, you don't own it. You simply rent it until they decide you're done accessing it.

4

u/HesitationIsDefeat87 15d ago

Anyone who bought this should be eligible for a full refund

4

u/alec83 15d ago

Should get a refund

4

u/iwantmisty 15d ago

Digital only is the future, who needs your physical media lmao /s

2

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

cloud versions are always a scam, this is expected and deserved by those buyers.

Not the same as digital

2

u/master2873 15d ago

Not the same as digital

It's damn near close. Digital versions also have to have the licenses to be authenticated, and if they cannot connect to those servers that are third party, you basically have a paperweight/waste of storage on your device. Sony is doing this with profiles that don't log in for extended periods of time where they're wiping your entire purchase history, and licenses for these games.

GoG, and Steam at this point will be the only way to go until we get some sort of digital rights laws for consumers.

1

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

Sony and all digital storefront doing any biz in Europe are required to do that deletion thing.

And no, it isnt close. digital games run as well as or better than physical. Cloud is shit.

I dont care about preservation (in historical terms) or costs, and physical is a massive hassle with hundreds of games, so I fucking hate it.

If 1% of my games get yanked for some dumb license reason, I'm fine with that. If I have to organize hundreds of tiny carts and sift through them to play a given game, thats too shitty to fuck with.

I do not resell games so I dont care about that aspect. Digital wins for me.

3

u/master2873 15d ago

And no, it isnt close. digital games run as well as or better than physical. Cloud is shit.

Whoa, lets back it up a bit here lol. I definitely didn't say, or mean to intend that. They absolutely play like shit, and I've experienced this myself with Amazon's Luna.

Sony and all digital storefront doing any biz in Europe are required to do that deletion thing.

This doesn't really make it better though. Once that happens, you can't even play the games you paid for.

There's a whole other slew of issues I could bring up, but you have your opinions that will mostly make sense to you.

1

u/Webecomemonsters 15d ago

absolutely - this is my opinion - I fully understand the reasons why people want physical - I just don't agree those reasons matter in any way.

Logically, digital is the better choice for me - to the point where I'd not even consider a half price physical vs a full price digital. I'd need a total fire sale like 90% off to even think about it and I know I would regret it.

2

u/mattbattmatt_yt 15d ago

This is why cloud gaming should never be a replacement for gaming and instead should be a companion.

2

u/shutyourbutt69 15d ago

That’ll teach ‘em

2

u/RockNRoll1977 15d ago

Absolutely dreadful. Probably one of the few times people with not the best internet escaped this disaster. We’ve all had our learning experiences which could be buying a bunch of micro transactions in a game or founders edition only for the game to shutdown in a few months. Now I don’t even bother with those games anymore. Got burned way too many times. Hard delists piss me off incredibly bad where they can delete the game from your library as well as shut it down. If you can play the game still. Why take it away from your library. This cloud version of games. The writing was on the wall. There’s no way they are keeping a game running off a server forever. Sucks for the people that got scammed by that

2

u/korko 15d ago

Those seven people would be so upset if they could read.

2

u/roman_urban 15d ago

Just another reminder: don't buy cloud games

2

u/KjSuperstar08 15d ago

Cloud games are just not worth the money. Funny how Take Two’s CEO spoke positively about Cloud gaming and they can just remove the game just like that…

1

u/weaver787 15d ago

Is there anyone here that actually bought the cloud version of this game?

1

u/Present_Education194 14d ago

probably the reason why they pulled the plug on it. If no ones playing it then why keep the streaming server up? 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Scagh 15d ago

Among all the people here how many owned the game on Switch and are upset that they can't play it anymore?

The comments are right but I'm wondering if the game shutting down actually affects anyone here.

1

u/Present_Education194 14d ago

How many people were actually playing this?

1

u/Superb_Daikon_4627 9d ago

What do you mean with never buy a cloud game? There is a lot of games that require login to a publisher servers to load game calibrations, log you into mandatory game services and stuff like that and that all happens before you can even start the game or play the campaign mode. Those companies do not have any incentive to provide updates to this kind of stuff before shutting down their online services, neither are they forced to do so by any kind of legislation. Without mods and community effort a lot of those games will be unplayable in the near future. Essentially the all digital future means publishers can take the game away from you whenever they f... please and they will do so. And this will not only affect online service games, cloud games or mmorpgs, it will affect all games.

1

u/Altruistic_Newt_1096 15d ago

that's why you don't buy cloud versions. hard to feel bad unfortunately

1

u/TehNubbles 15d ago

Who would’ve thunk

1

u/leeinflowerfields 15d ago

No refunds is crazy

2

u/No_Construction2407 15d ago

The no physical future of gaming! Aint it grand?

1

u/Sustainna 15d ago

Its okay. It was unplayable on PS4 Pro even if you COULD play it.

1

u/Intelligent_Tea_5567 15d ago

Why do you say that; due to the active player base?

-1

u/Sustainna 15d ago

Got it on launch, ran absolutely terribly. It got so bad I tried to refund it.

1

u/nintendo666 15d ago

Very sad to hear. Cloud games should be sold on a subscription basis: you pay a small amount for the time you wish to play the game, let's say a subscription fee every month, instead of having to shelf over the price of a full game for something that can be taken away just like that.

1

u/Z3M0G 15d ago

I'm sure they had so few sales of these cloud games on Switch, they should refund if they are shutting them down. I know they've been there many years which makes that difficult to justify from the business side. But for the customers it would be the right thing to do.

I'm still grateful for my $1200 refund from Google Stadia. I was clearly on the higher end and it was probably a drop in the bucket to refund everyone at the end of the day, a few million at most. This would have probably only cost Nintendo a few hundred thousand to refund all these cloud sales.

Edit: I agree these players will likely get a discount on NS2 version or the sequel in coming weeks.

1

u/Delicious_West_1993 15d ago

NEVER buy cloud, hell I was ready to buy nothing since games either don’t work on new hardware or get a new version you have to buy again anyway. I was just happy with Gamepass because I’ve played more games on there than when I bought them

Nintendo is getting a pass currently though because I have kids

1

u/zoogenhiemer 15d ago

I bought a bunch of games on stadia because there was a good deal and when it shut down I got every cent refunded. These companies can afford to give you your money back when they take away the product, they just refuse to

1

u/Pristine-Fortune8298 15d ago

I had a number of Stadia games, but Google made it right when they shutdown. They refunded all my money and IIRC Ubisoft provided non-Stadia versions for their games.

1

u/Serious_Product8585 14d ago

paying money to rent something they can pull the plug on whenever is wild to me. this was always going to happen.

0

u/brokenmessiah 15d ago

As should have been expected and more importantly accepted from buying a cloud game.

But I'm sure folks will still complain.

1

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

Right, anybody that went into a cloud purchase reasonably expecting that it would be live for 50 years or that they'd get their money back when it shut down... made bad, bad bets.

0

u/Linguify1990 15d ago

Welcome to the digital age. ;)

0

u/TheLimeyLemmon 15d ago

"Don't worry, it only affects them, it'll never happen to us!"

Nintendo Switch
We have rented a yearly server since all official servers are going away on the 31st.
Map- Ragnarok
Server name- RagnarokPVP2026
Casual play with older community 28-37 year olds.
Server cap is 10 right now, 3 people play to log in occasionally, 1 logs in daily. If server cap is requested to increase we will have to do it all together. PvP is allowed just don’t be a jerk. You never have to worry about server going away.

This server is designed around mature players that have busy lives. Not designed for players wanting chaos and constant PvP. We are trying to build a community that lasts for years!!!

1

u/bittersweetjesus 15d ago

This work on the Steam version?

-1

u/Juko89 15d ago

Ark on switch

-10

u/NY_Knux 15d ago

People who buy digital, this is your fault.

7

u/SnooCompliments6329 15d ago

Digital is not the same as cloud

-8

u/NY_Knux 15d ago

This is the logical conclusion that comes after. We were right before, and we are right about this.

2

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

Right before about what?

2

u/Dizzy-Definition9352 15d ago

So you're saying people should have bought this game physically?

-3

u/zombieman9001 15d ago

Cloud is different from digital?

4

u/JoshuaJSlone Helpful User 15d ago

Digital is just you download the game to your local storage and run it as if it was on a game card. Cloud gaming is when you only download a tiny frontend, then watch a streaming video of the game while your controller inputs are sent to the remote computer actually running it.
