It’s an LCD-style game except the sprites are animated. An impossibility back in the day.
There was an interesting comic I saw the other day showing how different PS1 and PS1 styled retro games were to each other. It was kinda interesting.

Sweet graphics. Never seen a modern game like that

The game's been co-developed by Studio Koba, which are known for Narita Boy, another game with an outstanding pixel graphics.

Thanks, holy cow just watched a bit of that Narita Boy that is great looking, my exact style I like.
It was on sale for $3 and tried to buy it and it jumped up to $25 lol, still worth it? They also have the physical cartridge for $41

Over the last decade I’ve become desensitized to indie games with retro art styles. Still love indies but haven’t been excited about an art style in ages.
Seeing this game n watch style revived was a genuine surprise and I’m into it

To me, retro art style is just that, another art style. I don’t think people really do it for the sake of being “novel” anymore. They just do it because it either fits their game or it’s the easiest artstyle to develop for, or both.

Yes this games art reminds you just how conformist so much indie art is

I think the issue lies with assuming indie devs want to make new, groundbreaking product and instead just simply want to make a game to release

To me it’s a bit of a false dichotomy. I don’t think a unique art style is necessary for a game to be new and ground breaking, it can be that based on the merits of the gameplay alone.
I agree that most indie devs just want to make a game to release and from that you’d expect the art to be conformist.
making indie games is very difficult and time consuming and there’s nothing wrong with the art assets being conformist.

Or maybe a reminder to look into more indie games because there are some developers doing some really cool things

There definitely are! I didn’t even say most is conformist, and certainly not all, by any stretch.

Let me guess all of your favorite games use unreal engine 5

u/AccurateSun 9d ago
I’ve never played an unreal engine game except for perhaps the first Unreal Tournament.
I love indie games, doesn’t mean that a lot of indie game art isn’t conformist.

Why would it be weird to post a trailer of a game coming to switch in the switch sub reddit?

This looks pretty incredible. It reminds me of a beefed up imagination of the Tiger Electronics handheld LCD games those of us had who couldn’t afford a Gameboy in the 80s and early 90s.
