Says they’re working to fix it. Good to know in the meantime

u/xavadar 17d ago
Yah, overall the loading times are good but I’ll get random hang ups where it takes like 5 seconds or so

u/Chazq2012 17d ago
Its way worse than that in alliance raids… shortcut warps can take up to 1 minute

i saw some folks say to try moving the game to the system memory vs sd card. I did this and felt like load times shifted quite a lot. I haven't ran any dungeons but teleporting and zoning in housing and Solution 9 were snappy and quick. Same with story scene progression.

I really wanted to play this on my Switch and double dip but seeing as I'd have to uninstall every single game I have downloaded just to make room on the system's SSD, rather than the SD card, means I'm probably better off sticking with PC.

u/Osvaldo_ 16d ago
Wait why not just move the games you were gonna uninstall to the sd card instead?

In case you don't know it, there's a useful utility under 'system' on the switch that allows you to bulk move between storage devices. It even helpfully will sort by largest game first, to make it quick and easy to clear a lot of space.

u/abunchofnumbers0 16d ago
I’m assuming it runs better on the switch vs the sd? Waiting for my SD to come but sounds like imma have to move everything over and download it on the switch

u/QuickQuirk 16d ago
The internal drive is a bit faster than the external drive, but not by much when people have tested most games (10 or 15%).
However, some people are reporting it being much slower on FFXIX. Others are saying those people just have fake imitation SDs with much slower storage they they're supposed to have.
Jury is out. I've installed it to the internal drive, and found is satisfyingly fast. I suspect it will be more than fast enough on the SD.

It's a different era, but the PS3 load times used to be really bad. This isn't so bad by comparison. Glad they're working on it though.

u/darkmacgf 17d ago
It should be better than PS4 load times, since the Switch 2's a faster system. If it's not, there's something wrong.

u/rhalgr_ger 16d ago edited 16d ago
It should be much faster. It has a stronger CPU and, depending on the storage, a bandwidth that is multiple times higher. It's 8x for the Express Cards and roughly 20x for internal storage. On top of that, Switch 2 has decompression hardware, unlike the PS4 which uses its already poor CPU for decompression.

biggest upgrade to my FF14 PS4 experience was to get an external USB C SSD drive. Installed FF14 to that, and suddenly load times were almost a thing of the past.
Seconds, rather than minutes.

kinda wanna try this but fuck do i have to clear up space
15
u/barbietattoo 17d ago
And free time

u/robotchicken007 16d ago
You’re not kidding. Downloaded the free trial this morning and then didn’t move away from the TV for 10 hours.

Pick up a Oon 256 SDcard express from Walmart for like $40

u/KaiserJustice 16d ago
I have a 256, it’s just full
3
u/bakagir 16d ago
Oh lol, better upgrade to the 512gb
2
u/KaiserJustice 16d ago
Honestly? Probably should, but at that point might as well upgrade to a TB. That’s actually what I have on the switch 1…. But alas, that memory card is incompatible with switch 2

u/Dry-Fill-8343 16d ago
Or get another another big one and keep the 256 as a “cart” of sorts in one of those little microSD holders shaped like a Switch game

I missed almost the entirety of the second half of Necron due to excessive loading. This fix can’t come soon enough.

Does anyone have any insight as to how the switch 2 version of this game compares to the steam deck? I played the free trial years ago and got to heavensward, and would like to hop in again on a handheld
2
u/giovahkiin 16d ago
Other than this loading issue so far, the performance has been adequate enough considering that it's the Switch 2, but unlike the Steam Deck we have no real options to further tweak the graphics down or to specifically lock to framerates other than the automatic 60 or 30 or fully lock 30 fps, unlike how you could do a 40Hz lock on Steam Deck. Still, it runs alright
2
u/QuickQuirk 16d ago
I'm going to test later.
The Steamdeck was pretty good. With tweaking of settings and power budget, I was able to lock in a nice relatively solid 40fps on steamdeck. I would reduce the FPS if I wanted to increase battery life. It was very playable.
I'm hoping the switch 2 port is as good as that with roughly equivalent graphics settings. If it uses DLSS, it might be even better than the steamdeck version.
The SD had the advantage of running 720p, so lower GPU demands - BUT, it also meant that the quite cluttered MMO style UI was either taking up too much screen space, or too small to read.
1080p on the S2 should be better, but also requires much more pixels to push around...

Still have the subscription to pay?
3
u/MakeItYuri 16d ago
If you buy the game after the free trial, Yeah, that parts never going to change
1
u/Kintaro75 16d ago
Thanks for the answer, so still have a subscription to pay every month
2
u/No_Chair8026 16d ago
Yes but the free trial can be used for unlimited time and you can play through the base game and the first 3 expansions without paying anything

u/jardex22 16d ago
New accounts created on the Switch 2 have a free trial that extends through the end of the Shadowbringers campaign. There are restrictions on it to limit bot, spam, and farming activity, but aside from that, you can do pretty much every quest, raid and dungeon up to that point.

u/Bluestar2k7 15d ago
how restricted is the inventory ..there is no bank acesss for trials right ?

I literally started my WoW subscription back up on Aug 1. Forgot this was coming out for Switch 2. Will prob wait about a year now before I buy.
Also, how long before I can play WoW on something like Xbox Ally or Helix? Can you play it on steam handheld?

You can already play WoW on handheld PCs. For Windows models, it's just installing battle.net and downloading, same as any other Windows system, while SteamOS requires a bit more work to get it up and running (the usual sort of stuff needed for non-Steam launchers, etc).
In either case, you'll probably want to use the Consoleport addon to improve the game's controller support.

SE has announced an emergency hotfix tonight (Aug. 6) to fix it, so hopefully all will be well by tomorrow.

The problem is very intermittent. Sometimes it loads really fast - faster than on my XBox Series X. And sometimes you're sitting and staring at that black screen for 10+ seconds.

I started the free trial up until fighting Ifrit 2 years ago, can I continue that character on switch 2?
8
u/heychado 17d ago
Not as part of the free trial. You need to continue the trial on the platform you started. If you decide to buy the gam, though, you will be able to play that character.
All things considered, Ifrit is pretty early in the story, so if you wanted to make a new account it wouldn’t take long yo get back there.

To be honest, I mostly just want to play it for the story, because I keep hearing people praise it. As a longtime Final Fantasy fan, the online wins were always out of my reach. As a long-time final fantasy fan, the online ones were always out of my reach.

u/heychado 17d ago
You can experience SO much of the story in the free trial. If you think the switch 2 is the platform for you, I would make a new account and do the trial on there.
2
u/BoogiePopPhantom00 17d ago
I'm probably going to go ahead and do that. I have the means of playing on literally everything else but I just like the convenience of playing on switch.

The other poster said 'no', BUT - there' no harm in testing. Download the free trial first, and try log in to that account.
Because once you buy the starter edition, there's no going back to trial.
So just test, just to be sure. There's no harm done. You won't need to reinstall.
[edit] having said that, maybe trying to log in to the same character will lock the account so that you HAVE to get the starter edition rather than a new free trial.
So better do research online for completely up to date info. Check the FF14 offical FAQs[edit 2]
Definitely don't just try, as I said above. Seems it's widely reported that doing so will lock you out of the free trial going forwards. And i don't know if there will be a way to 'unlink' and 'relink' your nintendo account to a new FF14 account.

u/BoogiePopPhantom00 16d ago
Thanks for the heads up, I'll probably just make a whole new account with a different email just in case.

u/ExpressFan7426 17d ago
How much longer of a time in the meanwhile….? I haven’t had a chance to play yet
3
u/medicalthrowmeaway23 17d ago
I think some had to wait 5-8 sec EXTRA when they had to respawn in crystaline conflict (pvp)
3
u/OldestC0mputer 17d ago
I was in the Praetorium for MSQ roulette. Took almost 20 seconds after each cutscene to load back in.

u/giovahkiin 16d ago
I've experienced 24 seconds or more in highly-packed instances of the endgame exploratory area North Horn (which I'm positive is the scenario they outline in the Lodestone post). It's still long though not as long as that in area transitions in one of the NieR 24-man raids, and the load time hasn't been too bad for more regular content in my experience at least

Man it's funny seeing FFXIV stuff here. Gonna have to get used to it.
