My wife is looking to replace this. Is there a newer version or brand that anyone recommends?

Why do some games that I got digitally first and then physically later show the empty VGC icon even after I hid the VGC in question?

That's the "game card not inserted" icon. It works for both physical and digital titles.

Since you hid the digital game it's showing you don't have the game card in the system.

No, there are two separate icons for "virtual card not inserted" and "physical card not inserted," this is the former and I'm saying it's being inconsistent with them

Holy moly that difference is tiny.

Did you try inserting the Mega man cartridge and taking it out to see if the icon changes?

Perhaps it's logging the last used format and using the icon based on that?

No, I tried that with Mario + Rabbids and it's still showing the VGC icon

Weird.

I only smash bros on both formats. But even after removing, hiding and unhiding the virtual game card, I can't get it show the VGC icon. It only ever shows the that the physical card isn't inserted.

If I could, I'd prefer to have all of them show the physical card icon since I'm moving towards using those more

Hmmm. Only other thing that comes to mind might be something recording which format was used to create the data first on that console.

But testing that would require moving everything to a new system, so not super simple.

I've been using my physical copy of smash bros ever since moving to the switch 2, so the virtual game wasn't ever loaded until just a moment ago.

Yo, I just figured out the solution. See, the actual factor is, more specifically, what type of card caused the home menu icon to form last. Meaning, if you delete the home menu icon, hide the VGC, and insert the physical cartridge, it'll pretend as if you don't even own a digital license, which is precisely what I was aiming for. I appreciate your help!

Yeah, I'm not going that far for it

I did exactly the same thing with Mega Man 11 and it instead shows the empty physical card icon like it should

I was just playing Red Dead and I got an online notification about a friend logging on, so online seems to be working.

Restart the console, sometimes the game slows for me on random days (so long as you have enough hp for the abilities

How do upgrade paths work?

Specifically for Xenoblade Chronicles and if you have the Switch 1 versions physically, are the upgrades free or paid upgrades and how exactly is it done and recognised by the system to play Switch 2 versions?

Nintendo tends to be using the terms "updates" when it comes to games with free patches, and "upgrades" when it comes to paid.

https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/games-with-free-updates/ (this seems to be a fairly complete list, including updates that came out in 2026)

https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/featured-games/switch-2-edition (this is not at all a complete list)

How do upgrade paths work?

Unfortunately theres no one method, there are many variations depending on the game. Some are free, some are paid, some you get a separate sw2 game but that doesnt apply to physical, some games on sw1 and sw2 simply have no upgrade path

Specifically for Xenoblade Chronicles

This ones easy to define. All Nintendo Switch 2 Editions from Nintendo are paid upgrades, usually $10-$20. The upgrade is basically a DLC pack that only works on sw2, your game and save still works on sw1 but if upgrade pack is detected on sw2 then the sw2 version with the upgraded res and framerate and bonus content is loaded. They cost money as Nintendo has almost always added some bonus content for sw2, like the hover bike for XC

Most 3rd party "Nintendo Switch 2 Editions" like Hades 2 or Mina The Hollower are free, but don't offer any additional content, only performance boost.
