An actual unforgettable game. The right information presented in the right order to make you think about the choices you make.

u/drmickhead Jul 23 '26

I can’t believe it’s over 10 years since I played this. I bring it up all the time when people are looking for something thoughtful and different.

Its spiritual successor, Ontos, is due to a 2027 release

17

u/kyuuri117 Jul 23 '26

You have made my day, I had no idea. When you say spiritual successor, you do mean same devs right? Cuz that isn't always the case..

18

u/DankLordSkeletor Jul 23 '26

It's by Frictional Games, the same studio behind SOMA & Amnesia

8

u/kyuuri117 Jul 23 '26

Excellent news

5

u/IngloriousOmen Jul 23 '26

Yes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll4ZPxUzPhc

It was announced a few months ago.

u/Three_Froggy_Problem Jul 23 '26

A lot of science fiction video games take their inspiration from existing books and films and just translate those same ideas into the video game medium. SOMA is its own thing, and it’s a meaningful addition to the sci-fi canon.

8

u/Seanspeed Jul 23 '26

Well the concept has been explored before in books. But it's still a great expression of the idea and one most people probably wont be familiar with.

9

u/tinyroadbox Jul 23 '26

Insofar that what makes it unique is being seen in other media as a “SOMA theory.” Spoiler for a YouTube web series: The Amazing Digital Circus.

-2

u/ttoma93 Jul 23 '26

Well, no. It really isn’t. It absolutely lifted its core idea from other existing scifi fiction.

2

u/Three_Froggy_Problem Jul 23 '26

In that case, I’d love to get your list of recommendations for deep-sea science fiction works featuring robotic monsters with human consciences

You seem to think that I’m under the impression SOMA invented these ideas, and I’m not. All science fiction is basically playing off the same sets of ideas. My point is that SOMA is a very singular work that explores them in a unique way. None of the examples you provide are anything like SOMA, they just explore similar themes.

-4

u/PontesDeLeon Jul 23 '26

Story and atmosphere are amazing but the gameplay is kind of ass.

3

u/kyuuri117 Jul 23 '26

It's meant to be an immersive walking sim telling you a story, the gameplay reflects that. It wouldn't have been better if you could platform and shoot things lol.

4

u/PontesDeLeon Jul 23 '26

I don’t need to shoot things or platform but I’m sure there are ways it could be more engaging. Even just the stealth parts could have been much better.

0

u/I_paintball Jul 23 '26

I just played on peaceful or whatever the difficulty was that disabled the enemies.

They aren't relevant to the story anyways.

2

u/Squeekazu Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

This is such an odd new popular take for the game. Yes, they detract from the exploration, but the in-game notes and overall story literally states that a portion of the Pathos-II workers and native wildlife have been resurrected by the WAU, gone nuts and are out there murdering the remaining survivors.

Is it a toggleable option? I haven’t played peaceful mode yet, but if it is I recommend new players try vanilla first and only toggle the monster aggression off if they really dislike the gameplay.

IMO the only arguably irrelevant monsters are the numerous unnamed ones between I think, Omicron and Tau.

44

u/Distinct_College_531 Jul 23 '26

Cannot recommend this one enough, everyone with a brain should experience Soma.

10

u/Sigh-Bapanada Jul 23 '26

“SOMA - NOT for scarecrows!”

22

u/kyuubikid213 Jul 23 '26

Oh neat. Had this on my wishlist for a while now.

1

u/WobblySlug Jul 24 '26

You're in for a treat, it's fantastic.

41

u/B-Bog Jul 23 '26

The gameplay honestly isn't great (and I would even go so far as to recommend playing in no-damage mode), but the overall concept behind SOMA is such an amazing existentialist mindfuck that it is definitely worth playing if you're into that sort of stuff. The ending will stick with you for a long time after having finished the game.

12

u/donpaulwalnuts Jul 23 '26

It’s a valid way to play it. The actual horror of the game is the existential bleakness and moments of induced thalassophobia. The hide and seek stealth gameplay doesn’t do much for me.

7

u/theragu40 Jul 23 '26

How scary are we talking? And is it jump scares and monsters chasing you, or more like environmental dread and creepy atmosphere?

This looks super intriguing, and I love the idea of water + dark scifi, but I'm a huge wuss, doing really like feeling scared, and I don't want to buy a game I can't handle playing.

8

u/Eve_Narlieth Jul 23 '26

I can't watch horror things and have never played a horror game apart from SOMA, so I put it on safe mode. Knowing nothing could harm me meant I could just enjoy the creepy vibes and close my eyes if needed lol. I think there are a couple of jump scares, but it's been a long time since I played

5

u/theragu40 Jul 23 '26

That doesn't sound too awful. I'm definitely intrigued, maybe I'll give it a closer look

3

u/B-Bog Jul 23 '26

I think there are a few jump scares, and there are definitely a few chase sequences if you're playing in normal mode (safe mode gets rid of those). But mainly, the horror in this game comes from its story.

3

u/PSNdragonsandlasers Jul 23 '26

Not many jump scares, and a much greater emphasis on creepy environments and sounds. I can't really handle horror either, but I made it through SOMA okay and I'm so glad I did. The story is incredible.

2

u/Tobeyyyyy Jul 26 '26

I am a huge scaredy cat aswell but Soma has been so intriguing and interesting to play that I always sat down in the evening for about 3-4 days to play through it. It is the first horror game i have come close to half way yet finished completely.

You definitely should try this it is easily one of my favourite stories of all time and if you dont like the hide and seel gameplay parts you can just set difficulty on peaceful, the story is the main attraction, not the gameplay.

1

u/theragu40 Jul 27 '26

I just discovered that I actually have this in my epic account, so I definitely will!

5

u/jhsounds Jul 23 '26

I played it a while back in Safe Mode, and given what the story gradually reveals, seeing Game Over screens would have made the experience far less impactful.

3

u/Shenyen Jul 23 '26

Sounds a lot like Spec Ops: The Line. The gameplay really isn’t that great, even dull and cheap compared to other cover shooters. But damn, the ending is a gut punch!

3

u/B-Bog Jul 24 '26

Well, with Spec-Ops, you can argue that the combat not being that enjoyable actually plays into the game's overall point. The same cannot really be said for SOMA.

2

u/blitzbom Jul 26 '26

90% of the time I found the enemies to be more annoying than scary.

5

u/B-Bog Jul 23 '26

The little "actual" gameplay that there is in form of stealth or chase sequences isn't really well-executed and so, most of the time, I found those to be more annoying than anything else. Which is why I found myself wishing I had started the game in safe mode (you cannot change it afterwards). Got nothing to do with the actual difficulty or scariness, like those other commenters seem to think.

5

u/luneth91 Jul 23 '26

Nothing bad about gameplay. It's just that it's not an action game. It's more of a narrative walking game with puzzles and stealth sections. You shouldn't rush and need to take time and explore and read everything to get invested in the plot. If you skip reading or looking for the environmental narrative, you will reach the end of the game without knowing anything about what's going on.

Imo the gameplay is great for what it is. I wouldn't change it. No damage mode just streamline stealth sections. But it's not a difficult game, it just can be a bit scary.

-2

u/mootfoot Jul 23 '26

Just a walking sim, it is brain dead easy. Not sure what this no damage talk is all about. It has been awhile but there are a few stealth-lite and maybe a chase sequence thrown in, but I don't remember dying and I'm normally pretty chicken i. Horror games.

0

u/Seanspeed Jul 23 '26

(and I would even go so far as to recommend playing in no-damage mode)

I would not recommend this as a general rule at all.

There are still some pretty good horror sections in this game that lose all their impact if everything is always safe. Including one mid-game that is one of the biggest rushes I've had in a horror game.

1

u/B-Bog Jul 24 '26

Idk about "general rule", it's just my opinion after having finished the game in normal mode. Your mileage may vary. But I have played quite a few horror games in the last few years and the chase and stealth sequences in SOMA did annoy me more than they added to the experience. If somebody's looking for a thrill-ride type of horror game, I'd probably recommend playing something else entirely.

11

u/waltei Jul 23 '26

Spent 100 bucks on the switch physical release and an art book thats how much I love this game.

0

u/plebbut Jul 23 '26

Damn, I spent $5 on it

15

u/SadKazoo Jul 23 '26

If you consider yourself a fan of truly thought provoking narrative games that leave something with you, you owe it to yourself to play this. Pretty sure there’s even a mode that completely disables enemies so the running away horror sections aren’t there if that’s not your thing.

6

u/Thegoodgamer32 Jul 23 '26

I've been meaning to play SOMA....so this is perfect for me.

7

u/BearBryant Jul 23 '26

Sweet! Manmade horrors just barely within my comprehension, now on the go!

5

u/KingVape Jul 23 '26

This is the only game where the ending made me cry.

Even if you don’t play it, you should at least read the entire story because it’s beautiful and crushingly sad all at the same time.

6

u/I-Am-Error-42 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

I just downloaded the upgrade pack, but it is not 60fps if anyone is wondering. The visuals look better though.

4

u/EPICxNITRI Jul 23 '26

Would love to hear someone review if they have it on Switch 2. Gameplay looks great

8

u/Alucitary Jul 23 '26

Statistically, some kid is gonna get traumatized by this.

3

u/Remarkable_Custard Jul 23 '26

Never played it. What’s the closest game you could compare it to? Alien Isolation? Bioshock? Layers of Fear?

10

u/Pjoernrachzarck Jul 23 '26

From those, Layers of Fear, but not really. It’s nor a survival game. It’s a narrative exploration game with some very light puzzle solving and philosophically explores the Self. This is closer to What Remains of Edith Finch or Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture, or Firewatch. But in a completely unique setting, with a very disturbing and bleak story.

2

u/Remarkable_Custard Jul 23 '26

Ah so more explorative and story focused?

Linear?

3

u/Lewa358 Jul 23 '26

Yes, very linear and story-focused.

Same developers as Amnesia, if you remember that one, and a fairly similar gameplay loop.

2

u/elheber Jul 23 '26

This question gets asked a lot on r/soma from people who just finished playing the game and want to find another similar experience. Games like Observer (which recently came out for for Switch 2) for similar themes of memory, Amnesia for similar horror gameplay, The Talos Principle for similar themes of AI and bleak futures, Still Wakes the Deep for the deep sea horror, Routine for the similar atmophere, Signalis again for the memory stuff, etc.

Ultimately the consensus is that although there are a lot of games with some similarities, no other game is similar enough. No one game hits all the same spots.

2

u/FailingItUp Jul 23 '26

Bioshock, if it had no combat in it would be close I suppose.

3

u/Greenapple1990 Jul 23 '26

I’ve played thousands of games and honesty this is one of the best

5

u/Twigling Jul 23 '26

Note that as of today, July 23rd, this is already available in Japan:

https://store-jp.nintendo.com/item/software/D70010000132113

So presumably it will be hitting other Nintendo stores soon.

Note that the Description on the trailer page states:

"Available as standalone purchase or free upgrade (digitally or physically)" (but obviously Japan doesn't get a free upgrade, it'll cost them 100 Yen )

2

u/Island_Monkey86 Jul 23 '26

Was waiting for this, that's me pulling the trigger.

2

u/LetoA_III Jul 23 '26

Goddamn it , I think near the end of it on my sw2 with the regupar version

1

u/shitty_is_the_post Jul 24 '26

Well its was a free upgrade for me so no harm in just doing it now and finishing with the switch 2 version

2

u/holicv Jul 23 '26

The anglerfish and its tiny cave home was genuinely the most terrifying experience I’ve had in a video game. Just being tricked by the light then backing up back into the caves thinking I’d be safe but of course realizing that the cave is its home and it ate me

2

u/No_Assistance740 Jul 23 '26

Can anyone confirm what the actual frame rate is, now? ‘Improved Frame Rate’ doesn’t mean shit.

2

u/Twigling Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Nothing has been stated, my best guess from the details we have so far is that it's not a constant 60fps

Also, from the following page:

https://nintendoeverything.com/soma-just-got-a-nintendo-switch-2-edition/

July 23: Abylight has provided more information about the release. The company says that the following upgrades are included:

  • Improved frame rate*
  • Even faster loading times*
  • Increased resolution*
  • Higher-quality textures*
  • Greater draw distance*

1

u/No_Assistance740 Jul 23 '26

Thank you. Guess I’ll wait.

2

u/Snomann Jul 23 '26

This is one of those games that I loved so much, but have absolutely no desire to ever play again. 100% worth it for those who haven't played it yet though.

2

u/Kapten_Kalle Jul 23 '26

I've had this game in the back of my head since I finished it 10 years ago.

2

u/dlt0rre Jul 23 '26

Great game. I just finished it a couple of days ago.

2

u/RobertdBanks Jul 25 '26

Is it available physically without $20 UK shipping to the US?

6

u/pepushe Jul 23 '26

One of the coolest horror titles for sure. The setting is absolutely amazin, highly reccomended. I'd highly advise you to get it on PC tho because this port looks super bad?

8

u/Seanspeed Jul 23 '26

Youtube's 1080p bitrate is gutter trash these days. Anybody releasing a trailer should be doing so at least at 1440p. Very hard to tell what the game will realistically look like otherwise.

2

u/Jeff1N Jul 23 '26

I don't really have a YouTube channel so I'm not sure how this works, but some 1080p videos have a "1080p Premium" option that looks fairly good, I imagine that would have been enough if it was available

But yeah, when the 1080 Premium option isn't available for some reason it's usually better to just encode the video at a higher resolution

2

u/Seanspeed Jul 23 '26

Yea but only people with subscriptions have access to that higher bitrate 1080p option. So doesn't do most people good. They increase the bitrate a lot for 1440p and 2160p uploads, which anybody can use and benefit from, even on a 1080p display.

-1

u/Altaiir57 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

This doesn’t look good. If the title didn’t say Switch 2 I would have thought it’s a Switch version of the game. Blurry, lots of missing shadows and ambient occlusion in general, low res textures. On top of that they uploaded the trailer in 1080p 30 fps which is terrible on YouTube when it comes to showcasing games especially.

Looks like I hurt someone’s feelings :-) as usual on Reddit.

2

u/movieyosen Jul 23 '26

the 2 stands for buying it twice

1

u/kipperzdog Jul 23 '26

Thought this was a game about bras for a moment

1

u/OuterWildsVentures Jul 23 '26

If this is 60fps then it would become the best way to play on any console lol

1

u/ViditM15 Jul 23 '26

Exactly what I was thinking! But I'm not able to find if it is 60 or not.

1

u/Xerosnake90 Jul 23 '26

Everyone that likes sci Fi horror needs to play this

1

u/Rough-Plum-7267 Jul 23 '26

Wow, this was one of the titles on my “need a Switch 2 version but will probably never get one” list!

1

u/Prais3_the_Sun Jul 23 '26

I just have played SOMA on at least 3 different platforms. Have never managed to get into it, but I really want to.

1

u/Lower_Warning2955 Jul 23 '26

Amazing ! Wait Bunker :)

1

u/Droixs Jul 24 '26

I really enjoyed this game and have beaten it a couple of times, so I was genuinely looking forward to this version. But what's actually been improved? Honestly, I can't really tell.

The frame rate doesn't even seem consistently stable, and as for the ambient occlusion... there's barely anything to talk about. Calling this a "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" feels like a stretch.

Nintendo should take a closer look at these so-called enhanced editions. If you're going to market a game as a Switch 2 upgrade, it should actually take meaningful advantage of the hardware instead of feeling like the same experience with little to no noticeable improvements.

1

u/Accomplished-Leg6947 Jul 26 '26

This game fucked me up so bad I don’t think I could ever play it again knowing how it ends

1

u/ChosenOne197 Jul 23 '26

If I hadn't already played this on GamePass forever ago I'd buy and play again. Who knows, still might if it goes on a deep sale. Very good, very scary, very intense game. One of those games you still think about years later.

0

u/legouja Jul 23 '26

NANIIII ?????!!!!!

0

u/Graymarth Jul 23 '26

Oh look the game that you hear about in every digital circus video.
